lf your car needs gas you have to consult your calendar now. 1979 brought the oddfeven gas rationing bill into effect. Gas prices skyrocketed. For the first time gas prices hit and overturned the projected high of S100 per gallon. Willie Stargell, at the age of 38, led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the 1979 World Series. Star- gell was voted Most Valuable Player in this year's series. He performed superbly during the pennant drive. His statistics were 32 home runs and 82 runs batted in. Street skating and disco skating have swept the state with popularity. There are roller skating beach boardwalks. Skating rinks have become more like discos. Even the skates have been altered. So if you like to disco dance, head on down to the roller rink and show your fancy footwork on wheels! 228 XE

For the 1980 Winter Olympics, the world came to America's Lake Placid, New York. The U.S.A. entered the games with the largest national team. I Eric Heiden-American speed skater- left the games with five gold medals. The American hockey team, ranked as the underdog, came away with the gold. A nationally uplifting victory. -i lohn Wayne fought his last battle. Not only on the screen, but in real life. After a long fight with cancer, The Duke lost his life at the age of 72. His successful film career delighted numerous fans for over half a century. ln lanuary of '79, Pope lohn Paul ll went on a world tour. ln October he came to visit America. He visited four leading Ameri- can cities. ln his oration, the Pontiff, gave new-found joy and faith to this country once again by reminding us of those famous words, America, America, God shed his grace on thee, and crowned thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. The multitudes of Americans who saw lohn Paul ll were left with the warm memory of a shepherd of the spirit who showed his love for life. 2

The movie was the story of the discovery of the Muppets. ln addition to everyone's favorite pile of felt, hair, big noses, and crazy eyes, the movie included an all-star cast. The 1979 World Series was the Balti- more Orioles vs the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates took the series four games to two. This year's Super Bowl was the Pitts- burgh Steelers taking on the Los Angeles Rams. Sorry Rams fans. The Steelers took the bowl 36-12. The whole world waited, wondering if skylab would fall on them. Skylab chose backwoods Australia to make it's dramatic entrance. After 6-years in orbit, skylab sent Australians on a wild and wonderful treasure hunt for pieces of debris. For the first time in history gold value soared to over 8800.00 an ounce. Leap year comes every four years. 1980 had a February 29 in addition to the other 365 days. Will the draft be reinstated? lf so, will women be required to register? This is one of the many polilitcal issues faced by Pres. Carter. 1980 holds the answer to these and many other questions. 10 -the perfect physical female. Ac- cording to Dudley Moore, Bo Derek holds the title. The general public seems to agree too. As a matter of fact popular opinion has obviously welcomed Bo Derek into the 1980's as the decades first new sex symbol. 229
