For the 1980 Winter Olympics, the world came to America's Lake Placid, New York. The U.S.A. entered the games with the largest national team. I Eric Heiden-American speed skater- left the games with five gold medals. The American hockey team, ranked as the underdog, came away with the gold. A nationally uplifting victory. -i lohn Wayne fought his last battle. Not only on the screen, but in real life. After a long fight with cancer, The Duke lost his life at the age of 72. His successful film career delighted numerous fans for over half a century. ln lanuary of '79, Pope lohn Paul ll went on a world tour. ln October he came to visit America. He visited four leading Ameri- can cities. ln his oration, the Pontiff, gave new-found joy and faith to this country once again by reminding us of those famous words, America, America, God shed his grace on thee, and crowned thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.
