R1chard Swanson F Coach BeTmYB3kk1lU'l Allen Haugland G BASKETBALL Hoople Hrgh School had another successful basketball season by establ1sh1ng a respectable record of 18 w1ns agamst 6 setbacks Although the team lost heav1ly by graduatron they prov1ded plenty of exc1tement for the fans durmg the wlnter Hoople opened 1ts season November 30 agamst a good Portland team and after a close battle all the way the Spuds came out on top by a score of 35 to 32 The next game was played w1th Vhnto wrth Hoople wmnmg by a score of 51 to Hoople lost 1n the annual hohday tourney for the f1rst t1me m frve years Although the team was undefeated before they were beaten badly by a hrghly rated Grafton team 49 to 30 Grafton went on to eas1ly capture the champ1onsh1p In the consolatron fmal the next mght Hoople played the1r best game of the season and eas1ly defeated Caval1er 65 to 40 Hoople won 1ts thrrd strarght Northeast Conference game by defeat1ng Caval1er 54 to 50 They then beat St Thomas Caval1er Walhalla Langdon St Thomas and Pembma before bemg defeated 1n one of the most 6XC1t1I1g games ever played m Hoople Walhalla and the Spuds met to determme rf Hoople was gomg to be the conference champ or rf Hoople and Walhalla would share the champronshzp Walhalla came out the v1ctor by a score of 56 to 54 In the D1str1ct tournament at Grafton we played Vhnto 1n the f1rst game After a close f1rst half Hoo le pulled away to w1n easxly by a score of 54 to 34 The f1nal n1ght Hoople quallrfred for the reglonal tourney 1n Devxls Lake for the f1fth strarght year by eas1ly defeat1ng Drayton 58 to 27 Hoople drew Han ey rn the f1rst game 1n Dev1ls Lake and came out 1 top after a thr1ll1ng game by a score of 49 to 47 In the sem1f1nals the Spuds met up w1th a good Bott1neau team and were defeated 49 to 51 In the game for thrrd and fourth Hoople downed NI1ch1gan 54 to 47 In four years of coach1ng at Hoople Byron Bakkum has comprled one of the most remarkable records rn the state by gurdmg h1s teams to 98 v1ctor1es wh1le tak1ng only 14 losses We all wrsh Nlr Bakkum success rn h1s future coach1ng and everyone apprecrates what he has done to make Hoople well known for therr basketball teams 5 38. . . . . . - . . . .
