Senior Class History Now as we, the Class of 1964, look back on our past here at Hoopa High, we find many pleasant and wonderful memories to take with us on our journey through life. In September of 1960, we entered high school knowing nothing of what our stay would be like. Determined to make the best of our high school career, we chose our leaders as follows: Presi- dent, Laura Lee Grant, Vice-President, Wesley Roberts, Secretary, Barbara Turcotte, Treas- urer, Florence Lowry, Student Council Representative, Jennifer Marshall, Sergeant-at-Arms, Dale McAllister, and Defense Attorney, Ronnie Bortles. In the fall of our Freshman year, our classmate Leona Jackson was crowned Homecoming Queen. During the spring, Laura Lee was crowned Sweetheart at the Sweethearts' Ball. Cheverne Case represented our' class as candidate for Carnival Queen. We remember well the spirited days We spent beating on the drum while parading through the corridors. Mr. Abeyta assisted us to struggle through this first year. Our efforts were rewarded as we were presented the Class of the Year trophy. Again in our second year we chose Laura Lee Grant our President, with Florence Lowry, Vice-President, Connie Arness, Secretary, Wayne Burroughs, Treasurer, Wesley Roberts, Student Council Representative, Jennifer Marshall, Alternate Representative, Ron Bortles, Court Defender, and Eric Wegner, Sergeant-at-Arms. Many of our classmates held different school positions. Jennifer and Laura Lee were cheerleaders, Florence Lowry, Barbara Turcotte, and Anna Crosswhite were Songqueens, Jennifer was H. D. N. I. A. Secretary, and James West was chosen All-County tackle in football. This was our year for royalty as Cheverne Case was crowned Homecoming Queen, Sue Brian, Carnival Queen, Gary Skidmore, King of the Sweethearts' Ball, Barbara Johnson, Orneriest Girl, and Laura Lee represented Hoopa High at the Silver Prom in Eureka. We mailed Homecoming invitations to the Alumni and did our best to promote school spirit. Proudly we accepted the Class of the Year trophy. Under the supervision of President Jennifer Marshall, Vice-President Wesley Roberts, Secretary Cheverne Case, Treasurer Connie Arness, Defender Robert Brine, Student Council Representative Wayne Burroughs, Sergeant-at-Arms Dale McAllister and Leslie Angleton, our Junior year was one of hustling and bustling. Many hours were spent preparing for the successful prom entitled 'Whisper of the Orient. Again we had outstanding student participation. Cheverne and Laura Lee were Cheerleaders, Florence a Songqueen, Jennifer the Student Body Secretary, Wesley the Student Body Treasurer, and Wayne Burroughs the Student Court Judge. For some unknown reason Wesley could be seen mowing lawns for the school and Ron Bortles could be found scrubbing skunk scents out of a certain pickup. Leona was chosen Carnival Queen and Jennifer was selected the Silver Prom Candidate. We were very proud of Eric Wegner and Ron Nelson who were selected for the All-County football team. Wayne and Jennifer were representatives to Boys' and Girls' State. The class as a whole worked together to bring us another successful year and the Class of the Year trophy. Hoopa High also Won the Sportsmanship Blanket for the third consecutive year and was entitled to retire it. Now as Seniors we see Laura Lee, Our President, Connie Arness, Vice-President, Barbara Johnson, Secretary, Sue Brian, Treasurer, Eric Wegner, Representative, Robert Brine, Court Defender, and a trio of Sergeant-at-Arms, James West, Ron Nelson, and Dale McAllister. Jennifer is our Student Body President. Assisting her are: Wayne Burroughs, Vice-President, Sue Brian, Treasurer, and Ron Bortles, Student Court Judge. Barbara Johnson is Head Cheerleader and Leona Jackson is one of the Songqueens. As Homecoming has passed for our last year, classmates Wesley Roberts and Laura Lee Grant became King and Queen.. We also saw our candidate, Judy Rosenau, crowned Carnival Queen. We will always remember this last hectic year of money raising schemes intended for a class trip. The Class of 1964 sponsored a presentation by Charles Lampkin, and a play entitled, The Night of January Sixteenth. Members of our class enjoyed the profitable pop bottle hunts, rallies, dances, and most of all the pride and priority of being Seniors. Now as the day of graduation draws nearer, we are thankful to our teachers, principal, parents, and others for preparing us for adulthood and hope they will miss us as much as we will miss them. 42
