CRYSTAL SWIMS TO VICTORY OVER OWLS Adownpour in Hondo during the first quarter of the game turned the Hon- do-Crystal City tiltinto a near swim- ming meet. The game turned out to be a defensive battle all the way. The Javelinas scored late in the last uarter to win the game 6-0. Dorathy was crowned by co-captains Monte Williams and Bob Martine at the half time activities of the Hondo-San Fe- lipe game. TI-IE OWLS CUT COTULLA The Owls defeated Cotulla 13-6 on a very slick and muddy field in Cotulla. Johnnie Morin scored all of Hondo's touchdown with short runs through the line. The Owls gained 205 yards in this game with Monte W il l aim s and Mo rin accounting for most of this yardage, OWLS BATTLE CARRIZO SPRINGS The Owls lost a close game to the Wildcats 2.1-31 in Carrizo Springs. The Owl Band, under the dir e ction of Mr. Bob Lewis, has been very successful this year, The band performed outstandingly at all of the football games of the 1953 season, Some well-received half-time shows were, "The Day in the Life of a I-londo Citizen" and several precision drills. On December 5, the band wentto Uvalde for the Inter- scholastic League M a r c hi n g Contest where it received a second rating for a good performance. Just before school was dismissed for the Christ- mas holidays, the band gave a Christmas concert for the student body. The band is very proud to have eight of its m e mb e r s in the District Band and two in the Regional Band this year. On March 5, the band closed the observance of public school week with a concert for our guests and students. The band left the Interscholastic League Contest at Alamo Heights with the exc elle nt ratings of first in Concert and first in sight reading. There were also 19 solo winners from the band in this contest, The band marched in the Fiesta Flambeau Parade in San Antonio, April 24, where it received xriuch applause and some blisters! A large crowd enjoyed the annual spring concert on May 7, The second band banquet was held May 15 car r ying out the theme of "Say It With Music. This has been a banner year for the F, F. A, chapter of Hondo. The r e is a membership of 76 boys with 62 enrolled in vocational agricul- ture classes. We started the yea r by winning six places in the Revaldina F. F, A. District Leadership C ont e s t held at Hondo. They are third in Chapter conduction, second in Greenhand chapter conductiong second in Greenhand quiz, second in radio broadcastg second in farm skillsg and third in Greenhand farm skill. At San Mar- cos in the Area Contest we won first, second, third, and fourth places. The first place team, being eligible to go to the state contest at Hunts- ville, won a seventh place the r e. At La Coste we won a second in dairy judging, third in poul- try, and third inlivestock. At the last contest in Hondo we won a third in soil judging and a sixth in grass judging. April l we gave a parent and son barbecue which was attended by two hundred and thirty people-the largest crowd we have ever had. A large crowd also attended our four one act plays, Four boys are planning to apply for the Lone Star Farmer Degree. F. H. A. Chapter is proud of the work it has accomplished this year. September marked the Area Executive Council Meeting in New Braun- fels. The chapter selected Bill Moos as chapter beau and the J. P. Nixon s and L. A. Smiths as chapter parents. November heralded National F, H, A. Week and the District I. .Me eting at D'Hanis where Bill Moos was elected District Beau. December was celebrated with a Christ- mas Dance. The chapter climaxed the Christ- mas spirit by adopting a needy family. Fresh- men and seniors were presented with F.H.A. pins. March's big moment was the election of new officers. At the Area VII Meeting Bill Moos claimed the title of Area VII Beau, Linda Harris was chosen District Recording Secretary, and Monette Schweers was selected District Pianist. The State Meeting in Fort Worth was attended by Mary Jo Meye r, Monette Schweers, and Babs Batot, who wasinstalled as State 5th Vice-Pres- ident. May was the month of the Mother-Daughter affair, The RegionalConventionis to be in Flor- ida. Babs Batot will attend as one of the four voting delegates from Texas. The fact that they have excelled in civic betterment, in the state and nationalassociations, and intheir own homes proves that the girls are truly the Future Home- makers of America.
