The first game of the 1962 Football season for the Tigers was with Rich Valley. The Tigers were handed a 49-0 defeat at the hands of the Steers. The Tigers then journeyed to Rye Cover where they suffered their second defeat. The Honaker team was greatly handicapped by the loss of several players through illness. Rye Cove came back strong the second half to down the Tigers 39-0. The Tigers led at the end of the first half 6-0 on a touchdown pass from the quarterback to fullback David Honaker. Haysi came back the second half to go ahead 7-6. The Tigers then regained the lead on a forty-yard scoring run by fullback, David Honaker. Haysi then scored to wrap up the game 13-12. The Tigers drove to the Haysi twenty-yard line before the clock ran out. Honaker dropped a 48-0 verdict to an inspired St. Paul team. The Tigers then came home to be defeated 33-6 by Rural Retreat. The Tigers lone touchdown was set up on a twenty-five yard gallop by halfback Mike Ball. George Robinson scored from the two. The Honaker Eleven met Jonesville from the Lonesome Pine District. Jones- ville whipped the Tigers 33-0 behind a strong running game. The Honaker football team then journeyed to Glade Spring to meet Patrick Henry. Honaker dropped a 52-0 decision to a powerful Rebel squad. Although the Tigers failed to bring home a victory, it was a profitable and enjoyable season for both the team and the coaches. The Tigers gained much needed experience throughout the season. The football spirit still runs high in Honaker, and we will look forward to the opening kick-off the coming year and cheer the team on to a better season.
