-avril , . ...pf H . GAP up-v'.kv Following the example of the Varsity Cross Country Team, the Sophomore Team compiled a 91 win 3 loss record. Pete Focha and Verne Lewis led the team to victory at the Alum Rock and Sunnyvale Invitational meets, and for the second consecutive year Homestead's Sophomores won the S.C.V.A.L. league championship. The Region ll meet and the C.C.S. meet were also won by the Sophomores, after they upset the previously undefeated Camden Team, which was ranked first in the nation. Pete Focha was named rnost valuable Sophomore runner. He, and Mike Howell, team captain, and Marvin Churchill were named to the All S.C.V.A.L. First Team. he First Row: Verne Lewis, Travis Nemec, Mike O'Toole, Don Gerrard, Bill Klemchuck, Dave Recht, Chuck McArthur. Second Row: Tim lenson, Mark lzu, Ed Gremele, Chris jenrick, Dave Johnston, Ray Overzet, Wayne Mills. Third Row: lohn Carty, Ron George, lim Sawyer, Bob Bonvini, Matt Church, Greg Wright. Homestead's Freshmen harriers started the season with outstanding victories and set new course rec- ords at the Alum Rock, Sunnyvalle, Del Mar, and Camden Invitational meets. Freshmen runners won the S.C.V.A.L. league meet and placed third in the Region ll meet. Four days later the team came back to defeat the two teams that had defeated them in the Region ll meet, to win the C.C.S. meet. The final Frosh standings were 91 wins and 2 losses. Nationally the Freshmen Team was ranked first in three mile competition, with the help of Verne Lew- is who had the fastest Frosh two mile time in the na- tion. john Carty, Matt Church, and Verne Lewis were all selected for the S.C.V.A.L. First Team.

In league play, the rec- ord was six wins and six losses which gave them a tie for seventh place. It was an interesting season. Players and specta- tors found the games exciting because both of- fense and defense play was very aggressive. The team averaged 54 field goal attempts per game and averaged 42.9 points per game in league play. On defense, the team yielded an average of 37.5 points per game. Good and consistent guard play was contributed by Scott Robidart and Mark Herman. Inside strength came from Dennis Bates, Dan Ritter, and Ted Rodrigues. Mike Byler and Rick Ramback, played both positions. Reserve strength came from john Anzur, Mike Harris, and Randy Hoyt. 138
