Y,-4 Nancy Tortorello and john Brennan study ,i.,. the picture of the beloved Pope Pius X, 'A-,MHC l whose canonization ceremonies will be one Wei of the high points of the Marian Year celebration. - A long and fruitful pontificate has seen Pope Pius XII continue vigorously yet serenely the unending struggle against the evil forces that seek to crush Holy Mother Church. As his most faithful intercessor he has chosen Mary Immaculate, she who is characterized in Sacred Scripture as terrible as an army in battle array. To Pope Pius XII fell the privilege of proclaiming the solemn dogma of the Assump- tiong to him God's grace alloted the honor of establishing an entire year of special devotion to the Blessed Virgin in commemorating the centenary of the promulgation of the dogma of her Immaculate Conception. In the picture at the left, the I-Ioly Father leads the faithful in the recitation of the prayers that marked the opening of this celebration. Among those to be raised to the dignity of canonization, public gratitude turns most readily to Pope Pius X, advocate of frequent Communion, and reception of the Holy Eucharist at an early age. The happiness of adding this new saint to the calendar of the Church belongs to our Holy Father, who bears the same name as his saintly predecessor.
