'Neath your Purple and Gold Flourish virtues rare. Glory to you, dear High! Our love for you shall not die. Our hearts are yours, Alma Mater, Holy Family High. LEFT: The south entrance of Holy Family is sacred to the seniors. The school building contains classrooms for elementary and high school de- partments. To the right of the entrance extends the auditorium, avail- able for school and parish functions. RIGHT: At twilight, a tranquil maj- esty settles over Holy Family Church, located at the busy intersection of North and Chapel Streets. Even its exterior beckons to those passing by with an invitation to share its peace and serenity. RIGHT: A striking and unusual painting of the Holy Family domi- nates the decorative motif of the sanc- tuary of the church. Its somewhat sombre background points up the simple white cross surmounting the high altar. West of the rectory, facing Chapel Street, stands the convent of the Sisters of Mercy, faculty members for both grade and high school. The convent chapel gives the sisters the privilege of visiting the Blessed Sacrament frequently. Ad LEFT: On the southeast cor- ner of the parish property stands Holy Family rectory, an attractive red brick build- ing. It provides accommo- dations for the pastor, as- sistants and other personnel engaged in the parish work. Pictured here is the Chapel Street entrance, flanked with snow-laden shrubbery. 33, is-4 LEFT SISTER MARY CON STANCE Vxce prlncnpal Journalism French I II Latin III RIGHT SISTER MARY CO LUMBA Home Room 204 World History American History Religion III Q'- Saul ana! mme! you REVEREND WILLIAM E DAVIE Prmcxpal Religion I IV, Chemistry General Science ue nauaidfzecf IM The quarterly examination schedule undergoes an inspection. Divided into sections this year according to classes, the Sodalists carried on a program of individual improvement and apostolic worlc based on the Sodality motto To Jesus Through Mary. The zealous efforts of Father Davie. S. M. Julia, S. M. Constance, S. M. Carmella and S. M. Jonatha guided the sodalists throughout the year. au 1 The S. S. C. meetings aren't too dull, are they? Hardly anyone, picking up a copy of the ACHILLEAN, ever stops to think how much work is done before the finished product can be proudly displayed by the staff. Copy writers busily cutl' their work to an assigned word length, staff artists spend many long hours with pencil and pen, and correctors place the captions accurately on each page lay-out. H. Ffs ACHILLEAN, under the direction of S. M. Cyprian, faculty advisor, has always at- tained a high rating in nation-wide judging con- tests. Without the loyal efforts of the business staff in raising money, the editorial group would never have seen the realization of their efforts to publish an outstanding issue of the yearbook. Cooperation spells success for this endeavor, as for all other student activities. The Class of '53 sincerely thanks all who have made this publica- tion possible and, we like to feel, successful. The EXCALIBUR appears once a month throughout the school year. Various issues are devoted to current highlights in the news-for example, the issue com- memorating Bishop Kearney's jubilee last fall. Thorough sports coverage, a column devoted to Sodality news, cartoons and alumni news are but a few of its features. Neither Sister lVlary Constance. EXCAl.lBUR'S faculty advisor, nor the staff members, claim credit for anything unusual, the fact remains that there are few schools of our size that publish as enterprising a news sheet. Gathering informa- tion, writing, correcting. typing, arranging the headlines and dummy-all demand patience and perseverance. The resulting summary of school news rewards the staff and wins them warm congratulations. Several times during each day's program, the student body assembled in church, where close contact with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament helped bring home the truths in which they were being instructed. Holy Family's annual retreat took place this year, as in the past, during the first three days of Lent. The retreat exercises were conducted by Rev- erend Joseph B. Kurz, of the New York province of the Society of Jesus. During the retreat, the entire student body assisted Father Kurz in offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at the altar of Our Lady, and re- ceived Holy Communion. The daily schedule provided for three conferences, with a period for reflection after eachg recitation of the rosary, spiritual reading and exam- ination of conscience. Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament closed each day's program. Father Kurz's clear insight into problems of todayis youth and his sympa- thetic response to individual questions made the retreat practical and profitable for every student, from the freshmen, making their first retreat, to the seniors, making their last. F, seem to be an unusually enthusiastic group. Perhaps this enthusiasm can be accounted for in the fact that participating in Choral class, the members can be literally gleeful and still obtain academic credit. The group is divided into two classes: one of seniors and juniors, and a second of sophomores and freshmen. These groups each meet for rehearsal twice a weelc and are then combined once a weelc for finished product effects. Several times a year, the Qlee Club supplies musical entertainment for various parish, diocesan and community functions. Special praise is due this year to the highly talented members of the junior octette, who have given time and efforts generously to entertain special groups. Class Day brings the student body together to climax the close companionship of school years. Sunday morning, preceding the graduation exercises, the seniors, clad in purple and gold caps and gowns, offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with , Father Davie, and hear his final words of advice. When the hour for the presentation of diplomas and awards has finally come, our valedictorian speaks for us, closing our record of achievement and happiness. Our most reverend Bishop gives us final evidence of his paternal interest in us with an inspiring address. Finally, for the last time, Alma Mater . . . we sing your praise. The graduates' gift of a new curtain for the stage provides a beautiful setting for the class of 1952. L. to r., FIRST ROW: S. Vollmar, M. Boyle, B. Casbarro, M. Fedigan, M. Fogarty, K. McEvoy, J. ABOVE: As the spirit of Holy Mother Church permeates every ac- tivity of our student days, so does her blessing accompany its closing exer- cises. Graduates assist at the Bac- calaureate Mass, the Holy Sacrifice to be completed by their reception of Holy Communion. Clad in purple and gold page suits, Thomas Mitchell and Thomas Cuff prepare to lead the graduating class into the auditorium.
