Z -.. iT T tvx A group of talented seniors, juniors, and sophomores belonging to the Glee Club. are shown during one of their class periods. Here, they are rehearsing songs for the senior play. The Glee Club is under the direcf tion of Sister Mary Joanne. Mary Poole is the ac' cornpanist. The inanimate world about us provides many interesting facts for investigation. General science, biology, chemistry and physics introduce us to the wonderful order of Gods creation and the unchanging laws of nature. The Sophomores devote a years study to the effect of those laws on their own bodies-good health is desirable and necessary. Mathematics plays an important part in the field of science and in many everyday situations. Elementary and intermediate algebra, plane geometry and trigof nometry add to our fund of knowledge and train us in correct and accurate thinking. General information and preliminary tech' nical training in fields of business provide two elective units for those who wish to enter this field. Special departments in mechanical draw' ing, music and public speaking round out the days schedule and the training of our student body. Died December 29, 1949 May he rest in peace! ,f X . One year ago, as the 1949 Achillean was distributed to the students of Holy Family High, we found George Burns' name as one of the most prominent among the Seniors. Catholic gentleman, devout Socialist and outstanding athlete were the char' acteristics of George. We all knew him. Some played football and basketball with him, others served Mass with him, but all the class of 1950 knew him personally. It was on the morning of December 29, 1949, that George and three companions lost their lives while attempting to cross Lake Hemlock near St. Michaels Mission House at Conesus, New York. A fifth seminarian, Philip Safina, lived to tell of the tragic and yet beautiful death of the four young candidates for the Society of the Divine Weird, Tragic by the measure of natural sorrow, beautiful because these boys were so perfectly prepared for death, We cannot express in words that which is in the heart of every member of our class of 1950, as we close our four years at Holy Family under the shadow of Georges death-which is . . . . . . after all, Shade of His hand, outstretched caressiriglyf' 4'34FY,- ' '-91' . oa- NIARC IA -XNNI: BULL LR 11 M11111 11111 'LN HN K, N 11 111 11111111 1111 II 1 11 111 111rtr13 1 11111 E11 1 1 tr111 11 111 11 111 11111111 111111 111111' I1 .11111111 11 111 Ll 1111 1xp1rt 1111111111 111111 11 1111111 1rr1 1 1111 1 1111111111 111 111 111 B11 11 r ,111 51111 LI 1 C 11 E11 t1r D411 1 111 XX 1 1 1111 1 511111 r I1 r 111 111 1 llllllf I 11 L 5111111111111 1 1 ff! EXHLIIHYII wwf-wr' fx, i v v5 After a period of almost six years when publication was discontinued, our school paper, Excalibur has been revived and is now published monthly by the students of the newlyforganized journalism class. Each month the staff has been interehanged so that every member of the class has had a turn at learning the fundamentals of each publication department. All composing, typing and editing of copy was done by the students themselves, under the supervision of Sister M. Constance. To give their work an additional profes' sional touch, the students devote time to the study of headline malcefup, types of news stories and individually styled news writing. Discussion of current newspaper articles help perfect class technique in writing. Each new issue saw an improvement over the previous one. Active sup' port and encouragement from the whole student body helped make Excalibur a representative school publication. 6 744' Az the top HEXC1llll'WlIYU stall men Edward Cuddy and John Fornesi secure an interview for the paper with Mrs, Clare Booth Luce after her lecture in Emerson Auditorium.
