Unfamiliar faces, schedules, bells: becoming accustomed to the Holy Cross routine proves to be the foremost task of the incoming fresh- man. As the 'students are familarized with the pattern of high school life, they encounter the difficulties of pursuing more advanced studies and the challenges of maintaining a high level of school spirit. Freshmen are soon made aware of their per- sonal responsibility to live up to the standards of performance demanded by high school teach- ers. Part of the fundamental program are the required courses of music and art, distinctive for the freshman class. As the student progresses, the realization that he forms an 'integral part of the school encourages him to contribute to the many pos- sible aspects of intellectual and spiritual edu- cation at Holy Cross. Throughout the year, the freshman demonstrates his active interest in school-sponsored events such as the magazine and candy drives. Each has sornething to give to those with whom he lives and among whom he works, and tor whom he has a special love. The world, persons living in that world, need what you have to give. The biggest job is to bring the supply and needs to- gether. Each one has a responsibility in the work of the Church - the work of Christ. QThomas Mertonj
