Well, the old annual staff really percolated this year. Under the peppy direction of Editor Fred Wilson, who just oozed enthusiasm, the whole bevy of artists demonstrated all sorts of zip and zowie, and of romp and razzle-dazzle. Frankly, the whole job was more fun than a barrel of sophomores or an American Legion convention. We never thought we'd get it all done, but somehow it just all slipped together with a splash and a crash! We worked so hard and so fast and accomplished so much that you might've thought it was a faculty meeting! So congrats to all the kids who plugged like mad and went gung-ho to make the 1960 Poinsettia the best darn annual ever prefabbed at good old Hollywood High School, U. S. A.! Like fabulous! The story, set in the deep south, con- cerns an avaricious sister's attempt to dominate not only her sensitive sister, Dolly, but also, the citizens of the small southern community. In an effort to escape Dolly, Katherine Creek, judge Charlie Cool, and young Collin Talbo sought refuge in a huge tree-house on the outskirts of town. Although the play posed many technical problems, the stage crew, under the direction of Mr. Ashdon, and the stage design group, under the direction of Mr. Bauer, suc- ceeded in creating an extremely realistic representation of a Victorian dining room and a uniquely stylized tree. This adult play, under the competent direction of Mr. lngle, acted as a fine training ground for young actors and was greeted enthusiastically by large audiences. ' JL The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra appeared at Hollywood High School, presenting an outstanding series for the benefit of many hundreds of elementary and senior high school students. ' W, fig -Q Varsity Football On the opening day of school in September, the consensus for the Western League was that the 1959 champion would be either University or Westchester, with Venice a threat to upset either one or both. University, Western League champions in 1957 and 1958, had 17 returning lettermen, including several all-league selections. Westchester had 23 returning lettermen, a complete first and second team! Venice had 18 returning lettermen, plus the entire championship B team of 1958. Considered a dark horse but highly feared was the 1958 runner-up, Hamilton, with 13 lettermen returning. Picked for last place were Fairfax and Hollywood. Everyone agreed that these two unfortunates would fight it out for the league cellar. Hollywood had only 5 returning lettermen of which only two had first-string experience: Chuck Steel, quarterback, and Boris Tabakoff, left guard. Erik Whitaker, Richard Russell, and Doug Stor- mont were the other returning lettermen. These five men were to form the nucleus of the greatest surprise teamu in the history of Los Angeles High School athletics. STANDING: E. Rodeschek, S. Hershorn, Sheik Foley, T. Hite, B. Young. However, beginning with a 24-6 win over Cleveland, a game which saw five out of the starting eleven in their first varsity game, Holly- wood went on to trounce Belmont 57-7 in a battle replete with long runs and sensational plays, with end Dick Newbery becoming famous in Los Angeles prep football by catching three Chuck Steel passes. Following the hard-fought Franklin game, in which Chuck Steel scored twice fonce on an 85-yard runj, Hollywood went on to whip Venice 19-12. Venice had been the unanimous choice to win, but in the last ninety seconds of the game, a double reverse by Steel, Blair, and Gerst cracked a tie score. Even more stunning was the 48-7 win over Fairfax, the worst defeat in that school's history! George Powell took over as quarterback, running the team flaw- lessly, passing to Elowitt for one TD and engineering two others with Wallace and Kinsey scoring. Similar success marked the University game Q19-131, which featured a thrilling 80-yard drive by Art Gerst, the Hamil- ton game Q37-71, and the final Western League effort with Westchester Q27-6j. In the playoff for the city championship, Hollywoodian tenacity could not stop the superior speed of Huntington Parkis explosive offense, and the Sheiks lost 20-46, as Huntington Park went on to become Los Dick Newbery, end Angeles City Champions. Track cc Boys jumping over poles, diving through hoops, and running around in circles may be just typical teenage motion, or it may be only the beginning of another special unique track season. This year proved to be the most enthusiastic ever, for some of the students were still running from last year, many of them in the right direction. Relays, high-jumps, and broad-jumps always bring spirited relays, high-jumps, and broad-jumps, and, of course, what wouldnit we all give for a few mem- orable precious and effervescent moments partaking of the post-meet, locker-room chitchat, where team minds stop to reflect on the score, to consider new approaches, to pledge anew the needed dedication to win again, and to shower. Mighty Mike Seidel strikes back! arsity aseball Hollywood,s 1960 Varsity baseball team, under the swinging direction of Coach Stan Gould, Hollywood's threat to Casey Stengel, proved to be one of the finest teams in many years. Bol- stered by several two-year lettermen, the team was abundant in experience, as well as ability. Hollywood had an excellent hitting team this season, with leadoff man Dave Gordon, powerhit- ters Dave Wallace, jim Blair, and Mike Seidel supplying most of the hits. John Crosby provided the left-handed power at the plate. The squad sparkled defensively with shortstop Dave Wal- lace and second baseman Dave Gordon combining to form one of the outstand- ing doubleplay combinations in the league. Hollywood's outfield was un- equalled with Frank Katch, Jim Blair, and Bruce Elowitt performing the de- fensive chores. The pitching staff was headed by John Roehrs for the second season in a row. Backing up Roehrs, and rounding out the pitching staff were john Kinsey and Dave Thordsen. Wimming Although many outstanding lettermen from last year's team have graduated, the varsity team has held its own this year and was undefeated as the league meets started. The string of dual meet victories, which has not been broken since 1950, now stands at 65, and it looks as if our team will be undefeated again this year. In addition, the prospects for our eighth consecutive league title are good, and each member of the team has worked hard to bring home the championship. The able leadership of Coach Ed Warner has produced another of the superior competitive teams for which Hollywood is well-known. Among the prominent members of this year's team are John Hodge and Bill Mar- shall, backstrokeg Rich Shavelson and Jeff Ellis, butterfly, Richard Glasband and Rick Richardson, breaststrokeg John Miller, Hardy Stewart, 'Tony Hite, and Bill Masten in the freestyle events. The Bee and Cee teams have looked good this year, and the members of those teams are the swimmers who will at- tempt to keep the consecutive victory string unbroken in the future seasons. Those who have gained experience and have shown potential include Don Brown, Ken Rodenbush, Dave Brubaker, Corky Lewis, Ron Matthews, John Jennings, and Ron Warren. G mnasties At this writing, the Hollywood gymnastics team is going for its second straight league win against Fairfax. Without the services of three veterans, the team lost the first practice meet of the season 7716-4216. The following week the Sheiks traveled to Marshall, where they came out on top 6315 - 561f2. The first league meet of the season found our team trek- king to Venice and coming out winners, 621f2- 571f2 by virtue of a first, third, and fifth in the last event, tumbling, after the score was tied up. This year's team is predominantly juniors and sophomores being classed as dark horses in the league. The loss of our two consistent, senior point-getters, Bob Harvey and Chris Dickel, will be a sad one, but we hope our veteran team will realize their three-year plan of winning the cham- pionship next year. cfifis foot Mercurial,' his Martial thzghg the brawn of Hercules. . .77 Cymbeline BACK ROW: O. The sponsors of the Hollywood chapter are Miss Barbara Block and Miss Betty Wyllys. The organization is composed of several clubs, each of which has its own officers. Each term, the members of GAA have a playday, the purpose being to share deep humility, personal growth, fem- inine insight, adolescent perspective, human dignity, sociological amelioration, and academic prowess.
