Since then, the burgeoning city of those early days has grown into a great world-metropolis, and its public high schools have become part of this phenomenal development. From those pioneer days, through a history-transcending century, this branch of our municipal educational system has been dutifully ministering to the needs of the youth of our ever expanding city with a faithfulness as true, and as fine as that which distinguishes today's almost flawless recordings of the most intricate and delicate sounds. This continuous, century-long record of constancy of our Chicago public high schools in serving youth, has prompted us to entitle our 1957 yearbook M94 Zglehy 4 . DEDICATION After fifteen years resplendent in faithful, devoted service-years that will be forever golden in the annals of Hirsch-and after a lifetime of ceaseless labor in the ever unfinished field of education, with the closing of school this June comes the retirement of our beloved principal Miss Marie A. McCahey, upon the completion of a long and brilliant career in the public schools of Chicago as a teacher and principal, in both elementary and high school divisions. Hirsch first knew Miss Mcffahey as a teacher. and later welcomed her returning as principal. Her high ideals and zealous concern for Hirsch, im- plemented by dynamic qualities of leadership and personality mingled with a genuine kindness of heart and sympathy of understanding. always brought us achievement and distinction with satisfaction and happiness, and merited for her the true affection and sincere admiration of students and faculty. as well as the community's acclaim and the Commendation of the school system at large. In parting, as a small farewell token of our esteem and appreciation, we respectfully and very properly dedicate to Miss Mcflahey our 1957 yearbook, whose theme High Fidelity' bespeaks so well her entire life. mia a mafclzdaa holedfy agifaya no lzegofufg gui ing uri on 5 Like the unseen yet mighty force which keeps the earth in its orbit, fidelity holds our 'separate world of Hirsch High School in its orderly, progressive course. High Fidelity, then, is a happy choice for the theme of the 1957 Maroonq It has special significance to me since it marks my fifteenth and final year as principal of Hirsch High School. The successful completion of each year of the fifteen has been made possible by the high fidelity of all my co-Workers: the faculty, the students, our two librarians, the office staff, the truant oflicer, the R.O.T.C. personnel, the lunchroom manager and workers, our matron, our carpenter, and the engineer and his maintenance staff. All have faithfully Worked to prove true the con- viction that education is one of men's most Worthwhile and fruitful pursuits. When I became principal of Hirsch in November, 1942, our country was at war. It would have been easy to push the importance of gaining a sound education into the background under the stress of wartime demands. But Hirsch's personnel took on the tasks of aiding our country's ,Wartime efforts and faithfully continued with their labors to provide and acquire learning. When peace was Won, Hirsch's family, instead of relaxing and becoming indolent, turned to new jobs to be done. The need to cope with the turmoil of a world in change certainly demanded devotion to our ideal that through education our most difficult problems can be solved. A wise man long ago said that the principal thing for man to do is to get wisdom and understanding. As each year unfolds the truth of this statement becomes more evident. The Welfare and progress of mankind are best served by education through which we get Wisdom and under- standing. My years at Hirsch have been most satisfying. The High Fidelity of all with whom I have Worked has made them so. My sincere wish is that all who become associated with Hirsch in its purpose to give good educational experiences will continue to serve our school, our community and our nation with High Fidelity. MARIE A. MCCAHEY L16 x by A ' w w fis. fr rumsc ami-1 st at 1356 MTE NIA L95 'LNZHIQLQ To commemorate the founding of Chicago's tirst public high school one hundred years ago last fall, anniversary celebrations took place in all our public high schools during an entire Week designated Centennial Week. Among the many festivities arranged at Hirsch was Parents' Night, when all Hirsch High turned out to join in common tribute to the educational achievement of the I Will city. In Welcome Hall stood a huge cake designed by the Art depart- ment, effectively proclaiming the jubilance of the occasion to all beholders. Wayan? M U 5C VARSITY FOOTBALL Coached by our able Mr. Fred Rittschof, the Hirsch varsity on many occasions showed signs of de- veloping into a fine team. They opened their season with an impres- sive 34 to 7 victory over Thornton Fractional at Harvey, and then trounced Parker 25 to 6. During the regular season our Huskies came up with a sparkling 26 to 7 over Kelly with an electrify- ing 93 yard run by Lee Stopoulos- the longest run in city prep competi- tion for the season. Another interesting feature of the season was our loss to Calumet 26 to 6. Many people agree that we actually outplayed them, and that due to a twist of fate and a bad break, we were defeated, but the ironic fact is, that Calumet later went on to win the Public High School League Championship. During the season, we were also defeated by Du Sable, Dunbar, and Gage Park, and concluded with a 3- won, 4-lost record. Carrying the ball, Lee Stopoulos steps high as he brushes aside a Du Sable tackler with the help of Charley Hightower ion the ground! throwing' a rolling-block. 70 Ken Pontikes battles his way with the ball through the Du Sable lme for a hut down WAQPQ g006 gang Olflflfii This year the Hirsch varsity, in its most suc- cessful season in several years, was sparked by many outstanding players. The backfield was headed by Co-captain Lee Stopoulos, a tremen- dously fast halfback, who scored a major part of our touchdowns, picked up most of our yardage, and was given honorable mention on many all- star teams. Also, starring in the backfield were pile-driving fullback Ken Pontikes, and Ralph Barkman, a smooth working quarterback. The line, too, exhibited many outstanding play- ers such as Joe Messina, John Thanos, John An- derson, Ralph Tardiff, and Co-captain Ray Giglio. Much credit must also be given to Dave Horslev, who was of great assistance to the team in gen- eral, playing well in a variety of positions, wher- ever needed. His disabling leg injury in the Gage Park game was a great loss to the team. Although the entire team played well, it is be- lieved that if we received a few more breaks in crucial moments, our season would have been even more successful. Although they were outweighed many times, they made up for their lack of size with spirit and skill. Unfortunately, we lost a heartbreaking match with Til- den in the city finals, which put us in second place. However, second place is still a glorious position considering all the teams which participated. We also were able to send many boys down-state to com- pete for the state crown. Each year they provide help to needy students, and strive to bring the school and surrounding community into a closer relationship and better understanding. Their main purpose, however, is to lend the school loyal support, and to help build our students into better citizens both in and outside of School. It is the Dad's Club which we have to thank for our annual athletic banquets, which provide the opportunity of honoring our various Huskie teams in a rewarding atmosphere of festivity and entertainment. 106 ,,,,..'! .. :a l l'A BOARD Above: tAround table, left to rightb Mrs. C. This friendly atmosphere helps in the promotion of that closer relationship between parents, teachers and admin- ist1'ators so necessary to the successful handling of school affairs. A membership drive for the Parent-Teacher Association is launched every semester with students participating by doing their part in encouraging parents to join this great national organization. Too, they keep our teams constantly aware that we are with them all the way.
