Art Department Iuft 15 lx it ll'l'll1C Parker K lwlorml xvlllilllitlll N Ilull n 1 lfermiei Art Department All Hirsch students are required to take two semesters of art, but this is an enjoy- able task, for everyone, at least most everyone, concedes that the art course is both interesting and delightful. Most of us have an artistic streak hidden away down inside of us, and how we do love to splash those 'paints on paper! It's astonishing what satis- factory results we sometimes achieve. For those really talented students, advanced art and art appreciation classes offer an outlet for artistic abilities. There is a variety of work done by these geniuses, ranging from commercial advertising to live model sketching, which is very popular with the artists, although the models rather tire of it at times. The art teachers are developing talent, but are still looking for a hidden Van Gogh in their classes, and are really quite hopeful that, perhaps, some day .... The art class which graciously consented to pose for our photographer is doing live model work. One member looks non-chalantly at the group, while her fellow artists attempt to improve their technique. , . 22

Music Department Rau' I : Helena Kane fhiistzxiive Nichliius Francis VN mm Music Department No one, except technical students, can evade learning the fundamental do-re-mi's, because everyone must include in his program of studies at least one year of music. Despite the fact that most pupils register in the music classes in their freshman year, we always End a number of seniors on the verge of graduation, and degradation, suddenly awakening to the fact that they lack two minor credits, and that they must enter a late period class that is simply jammed with freshies. For really talented musicians, a class in the history and appreciation of music has been organized. The singers may join the glee clubs or the choral society, if they don't flat too ofteng and those interested in instrumental music may choose to play either in the orchestra or in the band. A minor credit is given for each of these subjects. The one great rule to follow, if you would learn to sing, is to open your mouth as widely as possible. Notice how faithfully these members of the choral club are adhering to the rule. They are appearing before you to show you the exact Way to sing a chord.

Gym James Paterson Edward McMahon Earl Bland Verna Baker Vera. Trayford Physical Education Department All of Hirsch's students are afforded ample opportunity to exercise strenuously their vocal, mental, and athletic skills in the innumerable activities outlined by the physical education department. During the course of the school year instruction in every type of sport is given to all studentsg and intra-mural tournaments in these same sports provide each boy and girl with a chance to demonstrate his ability a-nd sportsmanship, and an occasion to enjoy the thrill of keen competition. Grand Crossing Park, which is situated across the street, east of the school, is the physical education departmentls biggest blessing. Here in the spring and in the fall, the gym classes exercise in greatest freedom, buoyed on not only by the lack of cold Walls but also by that certain something of the open air. Grand Crossing Park sees a truly great amount of physical exertion and enjoyment. It must be confessed that, although on this page there is a picture of a Hne park containing a few picturesque humans in the foreground, that it is not the Hirsch athletic field that is depicted. Jackson Park has that honor. 23
