Industrial Arts Left to Right: New 1.' Homer II. Geyim-x' Myer Natlmn lllargarct Coghlziu Harry Isllerwnml Fatherine llays Clyde Eehelxzlmrri' ,lolm Gleason Industrial Art Department Enjoy a little physical activity with your school work, and take some of the subjects offered by the industrial arts department. There you will find work that is easy and fascinating, and that satisfies that inner craving of yours to do something that requires dexterous fingers. You can make your own Christmas cards in the printshop, your own bookends and footstool in the woodshop, a doorbell in the electric shop: in the mechanical drawing class you can learn to letter neatly, and to draw up your own plans for a sink in the kitchen or for a summer cottage on the lake. While the boys fuss around the carpenter's bench, the typesetter's font, or the wiring in a car, the girls design dresses Qldave you seen those good-looking clothes that are hanging i-n the display cases on the third llo0r?j, make cookies and puddings, and concern themselves with the order and the beauty of the home. Besides the view on this page of certain clever-fingered boys in Mr. Gleason's printshop, you can find elsewhere in this book other scenes closely linked to the industrial arts department.

It is the general opinion of the students that this course is one of Hirsch's easiestg and although the teachers vigorously deny it, this fact may help to explain its large enrollment. Students really love to type, and to learn about salesmanship, office organization, and commercial law, but they are not so enthusiastic about bookkeeping, and they know that only the strong-minded master stenography. The commercial course prepares the graduate to take his small part in the business world. Many students of other courses-not so Spartanic as their fellows-find commercial electives both interesting and useful. The young men and women in the picture at the bottom of this page are not telephoning to each other as they type, they are not broadcasting as their fingers stumble over the keys, they are not plugging up their ears to keep from hearing the teacher's instruction, nor are they being gagged and made to exercise their arm muscles, but they are wearing the ordinary earphones and mouthpieces for dictaphone work. 19 Mzirtlizi lilumentli xl

Music Department Rau' I : Helena Kane fhiistzxiive Nichliius Francis VN mm Music Department No one, except technical students, can evade learning the fundamental do-re-mi's, because everyone must include in his program of studies at least one year of music. Despite the fact that most pupils register in the music classes in their freshman year, we always End a number of seniors on the verge of graduation, and degradation, suddenly awakening to the fact that they lack two minor credits, and that they must enter a late period class that is simply jammed with freshies. For really talented musicians, a class in the history and appreciation of music has been organized. The singers may join the glee clubs or the choral society, if they don't flat too ofteng and those interested in instrumental music may choose to play either in the orchestra or in the band. A minor credit is given for each of these subjects. The one great rule to follow, if you would learn to sing, is to open your mouth as widely as possible. Notice how faithfully these members of the choral club are adhering to the rule. They are appearing before you to show you the exact Way to sing a chord.
