First saxophone John White established a saxophone ensemble. The Thunderbird Combo, a jaz band, learned improvisational skills They played at several basketbal games and at concerts, including the Greeley Jazz Festival. he Band, Orchestra, and Thunder- bird Combo had a new teacher this year, Doug Harris. He had previously taught music elsewhere for eleven years. The Marching Band had an excellent year, with lots of spirit. They took first place in the Gateway to the Rockies Pa- rade in September. They also marched in the Parade of Lights, the Arvada Harvest Festival Parade, and at CU Band Days. There were many outstanding musi- cians in the bands this year. Keith Ed- 5, +4 QQ

CYouth Excited About V-lelpingj has received one of two awards from the National Secretary of Education. Out of 500 programs Hinkley walked away with an an award and a letter of congratulations from President Reagan. Y.E.A.H. is a group of students who Vanlandingham. Giving their time to help other stu- dents is the goal Peer Counselors hope to achieve. Peer Counseling in- volves listening and comm unica ting skills in order to establish a bond between the counselors and their peers. lt takes some- one special to listen and care for other peers.
