Through her teachings, born of infinite knowledge and constant practice of the finer things of life, all who come to her leave with a new awareness of the beauty and inspiration to be found in learning and the key to finding it. The purpose of an Annual is to present a compact, yet complete picture of the school year. The true measure of its worth cannot be taken today — that must wait until the days of remember when. We hope we have planned wisely, that from its pages and pictures you can gather memories of this section in the road of life — memories of its smooth roads and its detours, its side roads, and its occasional wrecks. Alma Mater Hail, Alma Mater ! Hail to thee, Maroon and White. We now salute thee, Guide us in the right. We will love thee ever For our hearts to thee belong Always in our memory Will be heard this song. Hinds! Oh, Hinds! May we ever loyal be Hinds! Oh, Hinds! Thou art dear to me! WE ARRIVED The girls came in to see their rooms, meet their roommates aJ The boys went in to see Jackson ' AT SCHOOL The library lights in the Ad Building gave promise of many a weary hour to be spent digging, boning, but we were soon to discover that the Auditorium had lights too, where we could laugh and relax. Hinds Junior College proudly takes its place among other similar in- stitutions in endeavoring to offer you opportunities for the optimum develop- ment of your physical, mental, and spiritual being. May our aspirations to be a guiding mark in your life contribute to your happiness and success as you seek the greater roads leading toward your respective goals. G. M. McLendon President 16 TRAFFIC DIRECTORS Our teachers, like the cop on the corner, told us what to do, how to do it, and occasionally, why. Their job consisted chiefly in guiding and directing our efforts and abilities into the proper lanes. This they did quietly, effici- ently, only occasionally diverging from routine affairs to call to task some Sunday driver or the guy attempting to make an engineering turn from an agriculture lane. Their worth will be recognized in the successes of our lives. 17 j f acuity and rfdntuti foatioK J. H. Abercrombie Electrical Motor Repair Mrs. J. H. Abercrombie.. From cityandcountry, Delta and prairie, coast and hills, they came, good guys and gals all. Working together, playing together, exchanging ideas and opinions, we formed friendships which alone would have made this school year well worth our time. 25 Sofi omone m m Jim Freeman McCoy President C ic u Dow Williams Mosley Vice-President m -- Roland Cranford Secretary Tommy Chick Treasurer Sara Tullos Reporter Mr. Bowling Sponsor Miss Halford Sponsor 26 Sojmomone Tommie Ainsworth Hermanville, Mississippi MYF 1,2; Dramatic Club 1; Lamplighters 1,2; Wed- ding 1; Class Officer 1; IRC 2; Chorus 2; Who ' s Who 2. Some were serious, instructive, bringing to us various problems for discussion and deliberation, teaching us to think. Others asked only that we have fun together. But all had the same basic purpose — to allow us to gain a greater knowledge and keener understanding or our fellow students. 63 a } tt wati MCLl etatfo t • Ben Woods Vice President First Semester • -  «• Wilbert Ellis Treasurer Fi- nance Chairman First Semester Barbara Cockerham Secretary First Second Semesters -- - rvl 1 Marcus Davis Membership Chairman First Semester Ray Marshall Program Chairman First Semester Helen Baird Reporter First Second Semesters Tom Gibson President First Semester Miss Lula Mae Fowler Sponsor r Seated: Henry Peden, Lida Nell Vaughn, Tommie Ainsworth, Barbara Cockerham, Joe McCall, Dow Williams Mosley, Mrs. Robert Baird, Miss Fowler, and Mr. Harris. In all phases of intercollegiate competitions we had teams we could sincerely cheer, game teams, fighting every minute for the victory they usually won. On the campus, we all had a chance to participate through the well planned and ably administered physical education program. To our coaches and to our athletes we say well done. 91 H I N D S E A G L E S Lions Bowl Trophy The Hinds Junior College Eagles have officially completed their 1947 football season, and the school can again be proud of the re- cord that the boys have made this year. Even though the honor of being state champs was not won this year, our team came in second place and tied the Ellisville champions in their season game with them. Hinds was the highest scoring team in the Junior College Conference this year, racking up 210 points while holding their opponents to 68. ALL - 1 ftf STATE 7 1W f Nick Digirolamo Halfback 2nd team All-State Jimmie Glisson Quarterback All-State Our Coaches Tad Thrash Halfback 2nd team All-Stale Carl Eckert Quarterback Honorable Mention Head Coach, L. The line played an excellent game and Carl Eckert did a good job of signal calling. Hinds 33 — Northwest The Eagles didn ' t waste any time with Northwest Jr. College. The boys scored on the third play of the ball game and went on to win 33-0. Everybody played. Ray Burleson and Bert Hill were the standouts in the backfield with Shores and St. Pe ' playing an exceptionally fine game along the line. Hinds 6 — Wesson 7 Hinds was on the short end of a score for the first time in three years Thursday, Oct. 2, 1947, when the Wesson Wolves took the victory by a score of 7-6 on the local gridiron. Wright scored for the Wolves. He went over from the one foot line after Stampley had been the main spring in getting the ball to that point. The try for the extra point was good. The Eagles, battling to keep their victory string intact, scored late in the fourth quarter. How- ever, the try for the extra point failed and many an Eagles ' head hung low that night. Hinds 12 — Poplarville The Eagles came back the following weekend and defeated the strong Poplarville eleven 12-0 in a hard fought game dedicated to former Coach John Reed. Jimmy Glisson tossed Nick Digirolamo a pass good for 45 yards and a touchdown. Later, Thrash took a hand off from Glisson and waltzed 20 yards for another. St. Pe ' and Captain Kelson did a fine job against Poplarville with St. Pe ' inter- cepting pass after pass and Kelson stopping everything that came his way. ityutcU Soaiet First Row: Dabney Gilliland, Paul McCullough, J. Third Row: Price Sneed, Lawrence St. Pe ' , Dick Preis, Monroe Landrum, Glenn Daughtrey, Herbert Ahten, Tony Manguno, Ed Kelson, Skin Boteler, Leonard Macunas and Jim Sneed. Fourth Row: Pete Hodo, Carl Eckert, Jack Fulkerson, James Free, Edward Harvill, Kenny Curtis, James Renfroe, Bill Davis, Johnny Miller, Joel Foshee. 93 HINDS EAGLES MANAGERS These unrecognized managers had many duties to perform. To them fell the task of easing the kinks out of some ailing player ' s legs, taping ankles and wrists, keeping equipment clean and, above all, keeping the fieldhouse spotless. They were always the first ones in the fieldhouse, and after every player had gone, the lowly managers might be seen gathering and hanging up wet equipment which some pampered star had strown the length of the fieldhouse. Hinds 34 — Perkinston 21 The Hinds Jr. Eagles proved their scoring ability again by turning back the Perkinston Bulldogs 34-21. The thrill packed contest was one between fast scatbacks and fine passing offenses. The victor was the team that could outscore the other, and the Eagles came through with flying colors. Glisson and Thrash did an excellent job in the backfield while Rosamond and Macunas stood out in the line play. Hinds 33 — Moorhead Rated as the underdogs, but proving pre- dictions are often wrong, the Hinds Junior College Eagles uncaged a strong running and passing attack along with brilliant defensive play to score 33 points while holding the Tro- jans to naught. Nick played a great game in the backfield and looked like the Nick of old. The entire line played a good game, doing some excellent blocking and tackling. Hinds 19 — Decatur 7 Hinds displayed talent plus and black- topped the Warriors warpath, sending them back to their tepees with a 19-7 defeat. In our estimation the play of the year was executed in this game. Remember the big hole that the line opened for Nick when he scampered up the middle for 75 yards and a score ? Finders Keepers 94 HINDS EAGLES Where is Banks ? ? ? Hinds 6 — Ellisville 6 Next came the El I isvi lie ' s Bobcats. Every- body knew they were tough and we wanted them. It was a hard fought ball game with fine line play from both teams. The backs on neither team could get started very well and were constantly thrown for losses. Both teams knew they had been in a ball game when it was over. After the dust had settled on the field and everyone had left the stadium the score board read Ellisville 6, Hinds 6. Hinds 13 — Goodman 7 Our friends, the Goodman Bulldogs, visited us with the same notion with which Wesson had come, Upset ! Their dreams were shattered, however, and Hinds annexed another victory to their record, 13-7. Hinds 28 — Summit 14 Little Summit, the bottom conference team, was our last foe. A majority of the Eagle fans viewed the records and refused to attend the predicted slaughter , but it was revealed later that a grave miscalculation was made concerning the Summit Pilots. The teams were in a 14-14 tie at halftime and Summit showed Hinds more stubborness than almost any other team the Eagles played this year. The Eagles finally calmed them down and took a 28-14 win in the last half battle. LAUREL LION BOWL GAME Hinds 13 — Ellisville For the third successive year the Hinds Eagles were selectedto play in the Laurel Lion Bowl. Their opponent, Ellisville, was a natural, the two teams having played to a 6-6 tie in a hard-fought regular season game. Both teams wanted a victory and tension was running high at game-time. The first three quarters were full of straight, hard football with neither side being able to gain the advantage. The line play was rugged while Hinds ' Tad Thrash and Ellisville ' s Sim Cooley kept their opponents deep in their own territory with their spectacular punting. In the final minute of the third quarter, Glisson found his hole and went 75 yards to the Bobcat ' s five from which point Digirolamo carried it over on the opening play of the fourth. Pennel converted and the Eagles led 7 to 0. Ellisville came back strong but the Eagle line rose up to stop them. On the final play of the game, Glisson intercepted a des- peration Bobcat pass and, with perfect block- ing, went 60 yards to give the Eagles a 13-0 victory. Joe ' s Swan Song Jimmy Glisson was the outstanding player of the evening while everyone play- ed exceptionally good ball with Curtis, Rosamond, and Kelson standing out in the line. The third period Monday-Wednesday Soccer team beat the favored third period Tuesday-Thursday team in an evenly matched night game at the beginning of the year. Whether it was the newness of playing under the arcs, or Richerdean Norwood, star halfback for the winners, the Tuesday-Thursday class lacked the drive and spirit the Monday-Wed- nesday class had in winning. In winning the state championship for the third successive year, Neely smashed the hundred-yard dash record, tied the 220 yard dash record, and Preis set a discus mark that should stand for a long, long time in junior college competition.
