As you soon can see, Compared to those we have At dear ' ole H. J. C. We ' ve got a bell for everything (I think that I can explain) And if you ask me They ' re one great thing. First there ' s rising bell Oh, my ! Oh, me ! And then there ' s serving bell Oh, gosh! Oh, gee. And a bell for breakfast, But since that ' s the time we eat Of all the others I think that one beats. And then that bell for classes We certainly have to hurry And the whole dormitory Gets in one big flurry. Bells are rung All during the day And it gets monotonous All the same ole way. And there ' s a bell that means study And why is more ' n I can see For I ' m very certain We ' re as smart as smart can be. And after that there ' s room bell, And then there ' s light bell too, And in the morning again There ' s the same ole one for you. But of all the bells That I think ' s out of sight, It ' s that date bell They ring on Saturday night. — Nell Peden, ' 31. 9 THE HIND$€NI4N n y $ENICC$ T helm a Sheffield ( lhapel, Tennessee President • ' Why aren ' t they all happy and contented like me? The foot- bad team started the fireworks by defeating some of the strongest teams in the state and the basketballers carried the good work on. The volley ball team failed to add year number five to their string of championships, but even the world champion Athletics lose a game oc- casionally. The tennis teams are exceptionally strong, with John Morgan, Robert Ballard, George Worrell, Pete Ott, and Max Stringer exhibiting their wares. The track team boasts the stellar Herman Berryhill, who has not been defeated in a hurdle race for several seasons, Ellis Davis, Dudley Moore, Billy Walls, Sylvester Smith, Bill Andrews, Alex Holliday, Longmire, Miller, and Richardson. The baseball team has the possibilities of developing a first class club before the end of the season. We do not claim to be the best, but we do claim to be as good as the best. The Eagle mentor turned out the best team in the conference despite the fact that the Eagles failed to win championship in the tournament play. Going into the semi-finals without having to play a single game the Eagles gave the mighty Copiah-Lincoln Wolves a licking that they will never forget. The Eagles had defeated the Wolves twice previous to the tourney and they were determined to get revenge. With a five point lead and only two minutes to play, it looked as though the Wolves ' prayers would be answered, but Berryhill and Davis threw a couple of long ones through the wicker and then Foots Ponder did the hero-act by sinking a Forkville Special in the fading seconds of play. Decatur defeated the Eagles for the Championship, a team that the Eagles had defeated three times previous to the tournament. We are expecting Coach Nutt ' s nineteen-thirty-two team to do equally as well. 9 3 1 THE HINDSCN IAN Pearl Brown Captain Sara Sheffield Coach mm Sarah Standifer Captain The basketball team was by far the best that H. J. C. has produced for four years. Captain Sara Standifer led the Eaglettes through an eighteen game schedule, winning eleven and losing only seven. The Eaglettes went to the Tournament as the imder-dogs, but defeated the strong Sunflower sextette in one of the greatest games ever played in the Tournament and made the mighty feminine Wolves of Wesson fight the hardest battle of their career. For three quarters the Eaglettes — rated as second-division team — led the Wesson girls by a narrow margin, but faltered in the closing minutes of play when their star forward was injured and had to leave the game. Pearl Brown, Chesley Newman, Estelle O ' Brien, Bobbie Morris, Lucile Berryhill and Lois Wicker have played their last game for Hinds, but they will always be remembered by the school for the services that they have rendered, but Eva Lee Davis, Annie Chapman, Sara Grice, Vera Mason, Beatrice Collins, Lola Thigpen, Etoile Murdoek, Marie Briehetto, Eleanor Collins and Mary V. Eckles will be back to carry on. 9 THE I I N I VI )N 1 AN ' ' : Jm s Spiv ife 19 3 1 THE 1!
