It has a double purpose: it urges pupils to speak American all the time and to speak correctly. The committee is composed of advisers, Mrs. Irene D. Brown and Mr. Keith Abe, chairman, Margaret Kuniyoshi, Thelma Chock, Samuel Hohu, Eldrid Morgado, Eugene O'Brien, Kyoko Yokoyama, and Laura Yuen. Various editorials and articles in the Hilo High News-Bulletin pointed out the reasons for the campaign and its importance. A radio skit compared the pidgin and good English spoken on the campus. Mr. Ricardo Labez, the Speak American chair- man of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, spoke of speech in the islands over the P. A. system. A suggestion contest was sponsored and the suggestions for the committee were put to use. Staff artists pleaded their cause with numer- ous attractive posters. The main writing body put poems, articles, editorials, a vocabulary section and a very diversi- fied grammar section into the high school paper. With these various methods, the Speak American Committee raised their exhortations for better speech. All seniors were re-tested by a special board. Mrs. Robert Bruce, Mrs. C. W. Carlsmith and Mrs. Aleta Smith were on this committee. They asked the seniors to read, to converse, and to pronounce sounds. Their reports were handled like those of the teachers. ikilrik 1,2,3.
