THE JUNIOR AT WORK Full of confidence and ability the Iunior arrives on September third. He is no longer a brow-beaten, book-laden Sophomore but through his steadfast work now has made a place for himself in the school. He plays a prominent part in the School Day, perhaps taking part in debates, and oratorical contests. A Iunior has opportunities to be in playsg or sports may be his line and he battles the foe for the glory of the Blue and Gold, winning his letter and the school's honor amidst the blare of the band and the cheers of the crowd. This same gay and informally dressed Iunior of Hilo High is not so one-sided that only play appeals to him. His studies also interest him and absorb his school hours. In Iunior history class he learns the story of his country and its great men. Although his ancestors may have been Chinese, Iapanese, Portuguese, Hawaiian or, not uncommonly, all five, he studies the American Way of govern- ment. ln this same history class he attains a respect for the institutions and ideals of Americanism. Elsewhere he dreams and drudges over commercial law, Thana- topsis, equations, or the number of elements in the universe. Outstanding students, scholastically speaking, who made the Honor Roll dur- ing the first semester are, front row: Kiyoko Tomioka, Yukie Oshiro, Kazuo Nishi- kawa, Walter Matsumoto, Hiroshi Nagami. Row two: Hifuo Iwano, Takashi Makinodan, Sung Bok Kim. Not in picture: Roger Carlsmith, Takuzo lnouye.
