19 69 EPOCH C. ' Students 40 Activities 128 Ideas must work through the brains and the arms of good men . . . ... or they are no better than dreams. - Emerson 5 if dedication is an admirable quality then Mr. Robert Stabler is truly a man to be admired. For the past four years, his tireless effort on behalf of the Student General Association has made it possible for them to transform dreams into working realities. Throughout this time, his interest and unselfish devotion have earned not only the respect of the students and faculty members alike, but a debt of gratitude that we hope may someday be repaid. Innovation in Hillside High School has elevated a malady which has been plaguing its students since our alma mater was first constructed. Now the Friday night blahs can be cured by attending Dr. Janie Helmstetter's Activity Night. Such therapeutic activities as basketball, ping pong, volleyball and dancing are available in the informal atmosphere of the girl's gym. After observing the success of similar programs in other schools, the administration, under the auspices of Mr. Peter Humanik of the Board of Education, Activity Night was presented on a two week trial basis. Although the equipment was locked up for the first evening, over 200 students soon demonstrated the necessity of the evening program. In compliance with the evening sports schedule and other special events occurring on Friday nights, the committee agreed to suspend its activities on these nights. With this understanding jind the enthusiasm of participating students, the Activity Night program has been established as a new institution of Hillside. The Changes Are Evident . . . 7 Interest and change are two words which have become synonymous with the attitudes and accomplishments of this school year. The interest of the student body was not confined by the walls of Hillside High, but manifested itself in programs like the Biafra Fund. Contributions were collected from the concerned students at basketball games and in the cafeteria. Donations from the S.G.A. and the township committee augmented the student contributions, producing a total of $210. which was sent to the war torn and starving nation. Changes in the band will be more apparent next football season, when their marching unit appears in its newly purchased uniforms. The interest in the uniform drive was not limited to only the band members who sold candy and arranged a concert but it also involved the P.T.A. and the ultimate 8-1 vote by the Board of Education in favor of changing the overworn uniforms. Now the antiquated uniforms that have darkened Woodfield Stadium for so many years will be no more. Rodrigo Briones Benoit was the first to pass through the open door connecting Hillside and South America. He arrived from Chile early in january to spend ten weeks with his comet counterpart, Harvey Erdman. As part of the Open Door program, Rodrigo spent his short stay in America experiencing the routine of an American high school student. This average American had the opportunity to travel extensively to Washington, New York City and the greater Hillside area. This summer Harvey will travel to South America and take his place in their society. Like Rodrigo, Harvey will also be the guest of a South American family and have ample time to study the customs of the area and live a South American existence. 9 ... It Took A Few People Who Really Cared. Stemming from the United Community Concern, or the U.C.C. are many innovations which have proven beneficial to the people of Newark and that have produced rewarding experiences for the student volunteers. Since its beginning, the U.C.C. has operated a measle innoculation program, a health mobile, and a tutoring service. Devoted volunteers have unselfishly given their time in this effort to make life better for the less fortunate of Newark. Through the measle innoculation and health mobile programs, the U.C.C. has brought free medical assistance and has promoted better health within the ghetto. Tutoring is the service donated by most of the students. These dedicated volunteers have found a way to employ the knowledge acquired at H.H.S. Thanks to the awareness of these people, the students of Dayton Street School reap the benefits of a good background in their weak areas; Reading, Social Studies, Arithmetic, and Spelling. The U.C.C. programs will help all races realize that unsound prejudices can be eliminated through a deep sense of understanding and interaction. These students give a damn. Sit by my side Come as close as the air Share in the memories of gray And wander in my words And dream about the pictures that I play Of changes. . . words and music by Phil Ochs copyright 1965 by Barricade Music, Inc. FACULTY Board Of Education MR. SEYMOUR BIERMAN PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION DR. WALTER O. KRUMBEIGAL ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS THE HILLSIDE BOARD OF EDUCATION: Franklin Feltman, Seymour Bierman, Sand ford Meskin, Mrs. Mildrred Hess, Allred Lordi, Jack Valenti, Al Atterman, Peter Humamk, Edward Zipf DR. WAYNE T. BRANOM SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS As Superintendent of Schools in Hillside for the past 25 years. Dr. Wayne T. Branom has worked in close alliance with the Board of Education to develop the academic system of Hillside. Retiring at the end of this year. Dr. Branom has presided over five major programs, each emphasizing the education of the complete individual. It was under his professional guidance that a ten-year investigation by the Metropolitan School Study Council, 1947-1957, cited Hillside for making the most progress of the 85 member school districts. Among Dr. Branom's noted accomplishments are serving as President of the New jersey Association of School Administrators and representing the American Association of School Administrators Conference on international education in Luxembourg. He is currently serving as superintendent of the state on the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association executive committee. DR. ANTHONY AVELLA PRINCIPAL Dr. Anthony Avella is more than an outstanding administrator. He is a true educator who has been waging a war against ignorance since the beginning of his career. Unlike many of his contemporaries who remain shackled to antiquated practices, he is endeavoring to modernize Hillside High School through modular scheduling. Under Dr. Avella's supervision, change and innovation will ameliorate the present educational evils which plague schools and students throughout the country. His flexibility and confidence in the face of opposition have conceived a system that will not only administer the educational needs of the school more completely but will also compliment the complexity of our times and the individualism of the students. The team consisted of Bruce Berlanstein, captain Ronald Frank and Eugene Pogany. Serving as alternates were Clem Berne, Anne Deutsch and Vito Jokubaitis. The selection of these six contestants was made on the basis of academic achievement and a studio audition. Mr. Robert Stabler, chaperon of the group, acted as one of the three judges. Sixty students cheered as the Hillside team competed against Xaverian High School and Half Hollow Hills High School, both of the metropolitan area. This game, the first Thanksgiving Classic which did not feature the traditional opponent of Weequahic High, has also been the last encounter between Hillside and Kenilworth. This season it took only seven plays after the opening kickoff for Hillside to march 69 yards for a score. The drive featured a Jack Issler scramble which brought the ball to midfield and two fine efforts by Mike Kirk brought the ball to the Bear 2B. On a first down play, Issler dropped back for the first pass. He connected to George Piasecki at the three yard line who then broke a tackle to score. Kenilworth came back to knot the score in the second quarter. The Comet tackle team of Pierce and Fromm were able to stop the Bear quarterback for a four yard loss. Undaunted by the Comet rush he threw a 29 yard pass and his teammates legged the remaining twenty yards for their only touchdown. Hillside scored their winning tally with two minutes remaining in the first half. Faced with a fourth down punting situation inside his ten, the Kenilworth kicker could not handle a bad snap and the Comets took over on the Kenilworth eight. Two plays later, Issler sneaked over from the one for Hillside's second touchdown. Last season was a year of defense in Hillside football. The Big D was never any bigger than when they held Kenilworth to a one yard gain in the first quarter and minus two yards rushing for the entire half. The Bears did not cross midfield in the second half of the game. The Comet defense contained their ground attack to 24 yards and only four first downs. Hillside's football squad has definitely improved over last year's 3-6 mark, ending their season with a notable 3-3-3 record. The EPOCH no longer belongs to the few people who created it; it is now owned by the students of Hillside High School and by the past. Actually the book always belonged to you. You constantly held the upper hand in the game. However, it was entrusted to a select number of students who employed all their talents to produce this finished product. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who survived the pressures (and my sometimes short temper) to work and complete this endeavor. - to Cindy Ragoff for her difference of needed opinion and for her unselfish cooperation as Co-editor (and tor the other assorted tasks which come along with the book) - to my editors who worked under hectic holiday conditions and midnight deadlines - to Beim Photographers for their unending service and for developing more pictures on 24 hr. notice than any other photographer to Dr. Avella for his complete trust and confidence - to the faculty and to the senior class for the proceeds of the Senior-Faculty game - to the people who begged for our funds and to the people who answered our pleas and finally to Mr. Joseph Ebler, our advisor. Without his trust we could have never published this edition He gave us a new sense of freedom which no other staff could have possibly experienced. He had faith in our ideas and fought with us for their completion. Thank you, Mr. Ebler. Thank you Editor-in-chief IMim mmmam
