Among the distinguished guests were the ambassadors from Spain, Italy, and Cuba and Senator Smathers. On January I the H.H.S. Band performed in the halftime show at the Cigar Bowl game and it also marched in the annual Gasparilla parade, the Festival of Lights in Fort Myers on February I3, and the Festival of States in St. Petersburg on April 2. In March the band entered the District Contest and the State Contest in May. We will always remember how proud we were to say That's our Band, when they came on to the field during the halftime shows at the football games. At the R.O.T.C. Sponsor's Day Parade and the R.O.T.C. ln- spections the band added color with their per- formance and the music for the Christmas program was certainly beautiful. Last but not least, we, the seniors, shall never forget the band playing Pomp and Circumstance as we came to the most im- portant night of our career, Graduation, Thursday, June IO. WON 7-LOST 3 ln l953 Bill Graeber took over the reins as Head Coach at Hillsborough. With a schedule that many sportswriters considered the toughest in the state, prospects for a successful season were not too bright. But under the able leader- ship of Coach Graeber and his staff the Big Red completed its most successful season since l948, writing 7 wins into the record book against 3 losses, winning the City Championship and plac- ing second in the Big Ten. ln the opener against Lakeland, Terrier fumbles proved costly as the Dreadnaughts capi- talized on the breaks to score a 27-l5 win over Hillsborough. The following week, at St. Peters- burg, the Terriers appeared to have improved little as Hillsborough had to come from behind twice to tie the score at halftime, l2-l2. But the second half marked the turning point of the season with the Big Red going on a rampage to crush the Devils 38-l2. Returning home, the Terriers ran wild to smother Plant City 45-l2, and sportswriters throughout the state began to take notice. The next week the Terriers col- lided with Jefferson and again staged a strong second half offense to stop the Dragons 26-6 after a scoreless first half. Against West Palm Beach the team played one of its best games of the season, dumping the Wildcats from the unbeaten ranks in a l3-7 thriller, Trailing 7-O, the Terriers came from behind to make it 7-6 at the half and then pull it out of the fire by scoring the final T.D. with 4 minutes left in the game. After two weeks' rest, the Terriers journeyed to Jacksonville and made it five in a row, edging the Lee General 6-O in a tight de- fensive battle. The Terriers were now recognized as one of the grid powers of the state and at this point were leading the Big Ten. The following week the Big Red won its sixth straight game, drop- ping the Coral Gables Cavaliers l2-6, with the strong defense again playing a major part in the victory. Making a strong bid for the Big Ten honors, Hillsborough invaded Jacksonville for the second time of the season and suffered its second loss, bowing to Andrew Jackson 6-O. This game was the only time during the season the Terrier offense failed to score and the loss put the disheartened Terriers in a poor frame of mind for the following encounter in which Hillsborough received its worst defeat, 34-7, at the hands of Miami Jackson's Generals. The Terriers bounced back strong, however, and won the big one, defeating the Plant Panthers in the annual Thanksgiving Day game, The game was played before a cheering crowd of l2,000 people at Phillips Field as the Big Red closed out a highly successful season. By this time the team had come a long way and after dropping two straight games to Manatee and Jefferson, the Big Red downed Boone and launched on a nine game winning spree. St. Petersburg, Plant, Jefferson, Boca Ciega, Clearwater, Jesuit, Lakeland, and Manatee all fell before St. Petersburg stopped the winning streak. The 1954 Hilsborean has at last become the book we have all hoped andadreamed that it would. To those people who have worked so diligently, so faithfully, I extend my gratitude. There was Margaret Vanderdray, whose way with words bound this book together, page by page. Then Patsy Voyles, A. G, Spicola, and Angie Cueto kept the ever present financial problems straight. Clever with a pencil and always ready with an idea was Charles Brushwood, the artist. Alan Christ took care of the many picture schedules and writeups for the sports section. Identifying pictures and putting them on the right pages kept Joyce Boutwell, Gail Durnin and Shirley Price busy for many long hours. The features and other all important parts that go to make up a yearbook were done by Valentine Greco, Barbara Waynick, Randy Turner, Joe Bondi, Sylvia Diaz, and Frances Leon. Then the annual policy com- mittee, composed of Mr.'HamiIton, Miss Wilson, Mrs. Littlefield, Mrs. White, Barbara Levine, and Richard Shawver, was always ready to offer helpful advice when there was a big decision to make. They all were truly great. Lastly, a token of thanks to Mrs. Nancy White, our faculty advisor, without whose guidance this publication would have never been possible. Now, to you who in some way, however small, have helped in the pro- duction of this book, I would like to express my deepest appreciation. P This is your book. I truly hope it meets with your fondest expectations. Thanks again to all of you. Sincerely, Barbara DeRing Editor-in-Chief J. 0. VALENTI 00.
