Through the three long years of high school 'Mid the scenes we love so well, As the mystic charm to knowledge We vainly seek to spell, Or we win athletic victories On the football field or track, Still we'll work for dear old Hillsborough And the dear old Red and Black. When the cares of life o,ertake us, Mingling fast our locks with gray, And our dearest hopes betray us, False fortunes fall awayg Still we'll banish care and sadness As we turn our memories back And recall those days of gladness 'Neath the dear old Red and Black. -7 X-- .- . Oh! How easy my task of Historian would be, could I present each reader with a dictionary from which he could select for himself all the flattering words one needs to narrate our illustrious career! Alas-I must choose the proper words for you, and modesty necessitates my choice must not be too lavish. Three short years ago! Then we came rollicking into Hills- borough High. What a bewildered lot of scrawny, wide-eyed, untrained Sophomorcs we were! However, we gaily washed off the mercurichrome, lipstick, and crayon which proclaimed to the world that we were Rats, and settled down to our real task of studying. And, to prove our efforts were not in wain, we added many names to the Honor Roll. We started our junior year more dignified and more self- assured. The year of graduation seemed less remote. With pride we were ready to demonstrate our superiority to the in- coming Sophomores. fOr-did we unbend our dignity when we helped bluntly to label these newcomers Rats. j Again we built up our successful achievements by adding more names to the Honor Roll and the following names to the Foot- ball, Baseball, Track and Tennis teams: Kenneth Adelberg, football '54, '35, track '35, Bill Roberts, football '35, Billy Harris, fbotball '35, Miguel Laca, baseball '35, john Ayala, tennis '34, captain '35. At last we were Seniors. With newly assumed dignity we faced the real task of our career-how to entice a lovely red and black bound diploma from our faculty and at the same time escape the irksomc task of writing examination papers! And what an education we have!-To begin with- We have learned that N. J. Strickland is our class crook. We have learned that Kenneth Adelberg is a grand dancer. We have learned that Cynthia Faris is our Math shark. We have learned that Peter Lauria has a perfect profile. And, that our school is the Finest school there is, with a fine principal, an exceptional faculty, and that Hillsborough High School is so full of memories, it will be a mighty sad experience leaving it. The class officers were elected with Clifford Wallace, presi- dent, Evelyn Lightsey, vice-president, Lydia Palenzuela, sec- retary and George Hayman, treasurer. During this last semester, many other of our classmates attained high honors. George Hayman, in addition to being a fine cheerleader, was selected as junior Rotarian, vice-president of the Student Council and was toast-master at the Senior banquet. During his three years here, George represented his class every semester on the Student Council. Vernon Moore proved to everyone his ability as a journalist by his successful work as news editor of the Rea' and Black. Graduation night he received the greatly coveted American Legion Medal. John Coniglio, president of the Honor Society, distinguished himself as a student and became Valedictorian of the class. Kenneth Adelberg, as an athlete, brought fame upon the school by his selection as tackle on the All-State football team at the end of last season. There are numerous others but our space is too limited to give to each the recognition each deserves. Thus our history is so far no different than that of all other classes which have been a part of Hillsborough High. But, our hope is now-to make our future better, more spectacular, perhaps, more admired. The space in this annual is not suiTieient to give all the interesting details but a brief skctch will give the reader an idea of what a remarkable group of boys and girls is leaving the doors of Hillsborough forever. In the fall of 1933, happy and carefree after a five months vacation, the majority of the Rats who were to form this class entered Hillsborough six hun- dred strong. It was not long before they were actively engaged in school activities. Many athletes were dis- covered to strengthen the football and basketball teamsg brilliant students immediately gained the ad- miration of the faculty, talented musicians boosted the size of the orchestra, and capable student council representatives looked after the general welfare of the class. The following year the most outstanding work in the class was done by the athletes, Roy Lit Velasco, Alfred Massey, Wilson Buddy,' Waggoner, and others. Lit, a second year man, gained the position of quarterback on the All-State football team and added to his record his second football, basketball, and base- ball 'iH's. Al Massey and Buddy Waggoner were first year men who furnished valuable new material and formed a nucleus for the next year's team. During the junior year the student leaders were Lyvonne Clinton, who served as secretary of the Student Council the first semester and Kenneth Vernon,. as treasurer during the second semester. However, almost Q25 everyone up to this time had spent his time studying so that when the long anticipated senior year arrived, a good time could be had by all. A goot time it has certainly turned out to be! Our football team ended the season with a thrilling victory over Plant, the Red and Black was revived with Caroline Edwards as its capable editor, plans were successful for publishing a larger annual, and the members of the class gained even more coveted honors. Lyvonne Clinton, who served as president of the Student Council for the first semester, brought great praise upon our class just recently by winning first place in piano in the State Music Festival. Wilson Waggoner, president of the Student Council the sec- ond semester, besides being a fine football player, served as Junior Rotarian for our class, while Le Roy Sweat, another excellent footballer, as well as a fine musician, leader, student and actor, served as Junior Kiwanian. Bernie Adelson, with an average of 95.82 for his high school career was awarded the honor of valedictorian of the class, while Robert Kasriel was the next in rank with 95.65. The boys also attained class oflices for Phil Torres was president, Frank Klein, vice-president, and Kenneth Vernon as treasurer, whereas one girl, Katherine Graham was secretary. Jimmie O'Neal as Cadet Colonel of the ROTC Unit, Alfred Massey as captain of the football team gained more laurels for the boys. In rapid succession the class play, banquet, baccalaureate, and graduation furnished lasting remem- brances for the mighty seniors, who each, we are hoping, will be very successful in whatever career he chooses. by KATHERINE GRAHAM. -..sq 26 Ee..- Q de Hillslin CODIFC92C'ElIQQlq 36 I I une Class THELMA LEE ACREE Thelma wax always quiel, buf ber friends found ber mos! inieresling. C. For the Hrst time in the history of THE I-IILSBOREAN we dedicate a portion of its pages to a school military unit. Hillsborough's Reserve officers Training Corps was estab- lished in September of 1935 by the United States government. Captain Walter H. DeLange, a man who has had years of experience in ROTC activities was put in charge of the unit with Staff Sergeant Dallas B. Hundley assisting him. The unit is composed of two battalions consisting of two companies each. Each company is made up of approximately one hundred men. The seniors and those who had previous military experience were appointed officers for the first year. The fundamental object of establishing Reserve Officers Training Corps is the teaching of military subjects and the futhering of national defense by the development of military leadership which will be available to the nation in time of War. While there are direct military advantages to the nation recognized and understood as such, there are also certain im- portant by-products of our ROTC training which accrue to the individual as a citizen. Among these may be mentioned: a high sense of honor, courtesy and fair dealing with one's fellowmen, self-respect, responsibility, courage in meeting one's daily problems, physical development and many others. Four months after its establishment the Corps was given an informal inspection by Colonel Gordon Catts, the officer in charge of ROTC affairs in the Fourth Corps Area. Colonel Catts was well pleased with the unit as a whole and gave us a satisfactory rating. The majority of the officers were rookies', at the begin- ning of the year but under the careful training of Sergeant Hundley they soon became able leaders. On March 27, 1936, the Corps was formally inspected for the first time by Major Otto Lange. The inspection was held on the school campus. The boys paraded in full uniform, led by the school band while the student body and the faculty watched from the bleachers. Wie have not received our rating for this inspection yet. The officers who became so devoted to the ROTC and are now graduating are very proud to know that they will be looked upon by future Cadets as the pioneers of the Corps. It is in their behalf that we now wish the best of luck to our future ROTC and may it develop into the best ROTC unit in the South. CADET COLONEL JAMES W. The season's record, including two hard post-season games, showed eight wins, a tie, and two losses. This imposing record was made against the strongest oppo- sition faced by any Hillsborough team in almost a decade. For over two weeks after the opening day of practice the gridders were forced to work-out on the low Memorial Junior High school field, which was practically under water because of the hard rainy season that set in on that first day of practice. Because of this setback and still more because of the fact that several players suffered injured ankles as a re- sult of the slippery field, it was late in the season before the Terriers reached their top form and strength. Pre-season dope installed the Terrier team as a sure bet for the Big Ten title. This was due to Coach Johnson's having six lettermen returning, along with many promis- ing reserves from the previous season's squad. These lettermen were Kenneth Adelberg, J. B. Griffin, Victor Hatch, Alfred Massey, Roy Velasco, and Wilson Waggoner. But the afore-mentioned iiriuries, most of which were confined to the injuries of the players' ankles and one of which injuries was suffered by Lit Velasco, all-state quarter-back of the 1934 team and the man upon whom Coach Johnson was depending for very much offensive strength, played havoc with the fortunes of the team in three important games. It was against Robert E. Lee Of Jacksonville, St. Petersburg and Lakeland's Dreadnauzhts that the Terrier eleven felt their handicap mo-st seriously. They lost to Lee and Lakeland, and, though they outplayed St. Pete's Green Devils throughout that, contest, that cer- tain scoring punch, which was theirs after the Lakeland game, was not with the Terrier machine that day. The result was a 0-0 tie. After the hard-fought -Lakeland contest which the Dreadnaughts captured, 7-0, the Terriers reached unbeat- able form. It was on September 28, at Plant field, that the Terriers launched their football season against a strong Clearwater High School eleven. The Terriers had to extend them- selves to their utmost in beating the Pinellas county boys, 14-6. The following week the Terriers journeyed to Sarasota to eke out a 6-0 victory over the Sailors in a night game. In this game, played on a poor gridiron which was full of holes, the Terrier's stubby full-back, George Middleton, suffered an injured ankle. He saw little action during the remainder of the season. On Saturday afternoon of the following week, the Ter- riers trampled Palmetto High School by a 25-0 seo-re. That was the best showing the Terriers had made up to that time. On the next Friday, the Terriers came from behind to win by a 26-6 score from Plant City High School's Planters. The Plant City boys outplayed the Terrier team during the first half but could not cope with the brand of football the Terriers brandished during the final half, with Orihuela and Hatch running roughshod through the Planter line. The efficiency Coach Johnson had worked into the Ter- rier machine, since the rainy season, was missing when the Terriers clashed with a strong team of Robert E. Lee Generals from Jacksonville. The red-jersied Terriers were completely outplayed that afternoon and lost the game, 12-0. The Terriers were led by A1 Massey and Jimmy Riveiro, guards in the line. Kelly and Orihuela stood out in the backfield. On November 2, the Terriers journeyed to St. Peters- burg for their annual tilt with the Green Devils of St. Pete High. Although they outplayed their heavier opponents, the Hillsborough eleven could not produce enough scoring punch to push across a single score. Hillsborough put up a perfect defense, with guards Massey and Riveiro. substitute end Dunbar, and Vic Hatch, fullback, bearing the brunt of it. The Terriers put on display an effective pass- ing attack, being successful in half of its fourteen tries. November 9, L. S. Wheeler broke off tackle for a 38- yard touchdown jaunt to give Lakeland a one-touchdown victory over Hillsborough. The game, played at Plant field, was a hard-fought contest from the outset. In this game Lit Velasco flashed for the first time of the sea- son the form that made him the outstanding quarterback in the state the previous year. His punt returning was outstanding. Adelberg, Griffin, Waggoner, and again Al Massey stood out in the Hillsborough forward wall. Hatch and Velasco led the Terrier backs. One week later, an improved Terrier eleven defeated a strong Pensacola High eleven in Pensacola while the mercury hovered not too far above the freezing point. The Terriers cut loose with a first half' attack that netted them thirteen points and then held the powerful Pensacola aggre- gation to seven points in the last half to come out of that contest the victors, 13-7. With that game the Ter- riers came into their own. It marked the beginning of a. four game win streak over the hardest kind of opposition faced by a Terrier team in about a decade-wins over Pensacola, Plant, the University of Tampa freshmen, and the prep champions of Central New York State, Utica Free Academy's eleven. Next in the line of events for the Hillsborough team was a glorious and convincing Turkey Day triumph over Hills- borough's arch rivals, Plant I-Iigh's Panthers. The Panthers were generally regarded as favorites to take the annual battle. The usual pep meetings, parades, and excitement out-did anything of the past. It was a typical Thanksgiving Day crowd that saw the two evenly matched teams battle on fairly even terms until late in the first period. Then it was when Lit Velasco returned one of Plant's punts to the Panther fifteen yard marker. Hillsborough's backs drove the ball to thc one yard stripe before Plant took the ball on downs. -....,g5f 85 RW.- x Ae Hillslocorcefamfwv Early in the second quarter, three Terriers broke through the Plant line and blocked Billy McDuffie's punt and the ball rolled out of the end zone for an automatic safety, giving Hillsborough two points. After the kick-off Hillsborough advanced the ball quickly to Plant's one yard line from which point Velasco carried the ball over for a touchdown. Hillsborough led 8-0. The attempted kick for extra point was wide. In an almost equally short time the Terriers pushed over another touchdown. This resulted from a drive, which was climaxed when Henry Orihuela dashed the final twenty yards for the score. Masscy's try for extra point was good. The next and last touchdown of the game was scored by the Panthers in the fourth quarter. The field, having been made dangerous and slippery by a shower during intermission, the Terriers were content to wage a de- fensive battle during the last half. After the Plant conquest, the Terrier eleven began pointing towards the Kiwanis Club's New Year's Day game. Utica Free Academy of New York was chosen to invade the state. In order to keepl from growing stale, the boys them- selves arranged the contest with the Tampa U. frosh. The proceeds from the contest went toward sweaters for the members of the two teams. The freshmen, boasting a highly formidable record, were led by Dick Spoto, a former Terrier. In addition to their twenty pound weight advantage to the man, the Baby Spartans also had the advantage of experience on their side. The Terriers took up with the strong freshman team where they left od' with Plant. They won one of the greatest grid battles yet waged on Plant Field, a 14-13 upset victory, which came late in the fourth quarter. After Bill Roberts' 23 yard touchdown run through the center of the Spartan line, which tied the score at 13-13, Al Massey kicked the extra point. Following the victory over the Spartans, the Terriers bent their every effort to the task of bettering their form to cope with the Utica eleven's highly touted attack. Reams of words came out of the north tooting Utica. The team was undefeated in the nine games played up to the time of their New Year's clash in Tampa. Both teams took the field that sunshiny afternoon with their full strength. Utica drew first blood with its touchdown drive which was culminated with Roczen's nine yard off tackle thrust in the last part of the first half. The try fo-r extra point was blocked. The Terriers retaliated with a score in the third quar- ter. The Utes had been driven back deep into their ter- ritory. When fmally the Terriers forced the Utica team to punt, they swarmed the Utica punter, Kazmer Roczen, and blocked the punt. Sweat, Terrier end, scooped up the ball and crossed the goal line for a Terrier touchdown. Massey calmly swung his educated toe into the pigskin in an attempt for extra point and Hillsborough shortly afterward led 7-6! With this hard-fought victory over the Yankees, Hills- borough ended a highly successful football seaso-n. The work of Massey, particularly in this contest, estab- lished him as the outstanding guard in the state. Adel- berg, all-state tackle, played his usual bang-up game. By this time, the Terrier was indeed a very powerful and smooth-working high school football team and it ap- peared that they could go on and on, taking all kinds of prep school opposition after the triumph over Utica. Throughout the season, the Terrier squad kept up its optimism, although the adverse conditions under which they often carried on would have furnished ample reason for growing discouraged. Assisting Coach Johnson in the excellent coaching job he accomplished were, as usual, Assistant Coach Walter Burrell, and early in the season, Dick Bettis. H Club Hillsborough's H club has taken great strides this year in the very difficult task of regaining the influential position it once held in Hillsborough. During the earlier part of the term the cluwb was held together by a few seniors. These were led by Beans York, president, Buddy Waggoner, vice-president, Ed. Schoeneck, secretary, and LeRoy Sweat, treasurer. This spring the club has made most of its progress. Many new members were taken in. As the annual goes to press, another group of boys is being tapped into the club. The club planned a dance which is to be given May 16 at the Legion Casino. The club chose Jane Combs, Katherine Graham, and Charlotte Peerman to sponsor the affair. Oiicers for next year are: Victor Hatch, president, J. B. Griiiin, vice-president, Mahon.Myers, secretary, and George Middleton, treasurer. Membership to the club is limited to lettermen. If the program is carried out as planned, the club will certainly regain the former position in this school's affairs it has enjoyed in the past. T Basketball Resume Hillsborough's 1936 basketball team, in spite of the fact that it lacked an essential to every great cage team-height, was great enough to win the city, county, and west coast basketball titles. In their final performance, the cagers, called my flea circusi' by their coach, Willard Johnson, showed their strength by falling before Orlando High's five, 1936 Florida state champions only after a thrilling, closely contested, extra period contest in the first round of the state tournament. The team started the season with a display of teamwork that carried it to the top of the Big Ten. When the season was more than half over, the team was slowed up greatly by an epidemic of flu. During this epidemic the team fell from the top of the Big Ten to third place. Hillsborough finished the season in third place behind Andrew Jackson and Orlando high schools. The highlights of the season were the two victories over Plant High's cagers, which won the city title for Hills- borough and virtually cinched the county cham- pionship for the second straight year. The team was not outstanding because of the performance of any one man but because of its smooth team work. The first team was composed of Schoeneck and McNenney, forwards, York, center, and Poole and Velasco, guards. Velasco was elected honorary captain at the end of the season. To the B team likewise, should go praise. BASKETBALL SCHEDULE DATE OPPONENT WE THEY 1936 Jan. 10 Plant City - - - - 39 19 Jan. 11 St. Leo ----- - 53 17 Jan. 17 Robert E. In the state meet in Winter Park, May 1, Lewis Marchand was the only Terrier to place, winning fourth place in the 50 yard dash.
