If in latter life as you look through its yellow pages, this book brings to you happy memories of by-gone school days and treasured friendships, then our work and efforts to preserve the picture life and activities of the past year have not been in vain. The Red and BIBCIC Although Yale has always favored The violet's dark blue, And the sturdy son,s of Plant High To the gold and black are true, We will own the lilies slender Nor honor shall they lack, Wliile the Terrier stands defender Of the dear old Red and Black. Through the three long years of high 'Mid the scenes we love so well, As the mystic charm to knowledge We vainly seek to spell, Cr we win athletic victories On the football field or track, Still we'll work for dear old Hillsboro And the dear old Red and Black. W'hen the cares of life o,er take us, Mingling fast our locks with gray, And our dearest hopes betray us, False fortunes fall away, Still we,ll banish care and sadness As we turn our memories back And recall those days Of gladness school ugh ,Neath the dear old Red and Black. To Charles Meeker, teacher and author, in token of our admiration for his loveable character and appreciation of his friendship to every student, we, the staff, dedicate this, the twenty-first vol- ume of the Hilsborean. Only five major letter men of the previous season reported for action. Coach Johnson, with Coach Burrell's assistance, had to mold an entirely new line, and veteran guard, Palori, with three backfield men, returned as the nucleus for ball carriers. Development was hampered by early injuries to several promising prospects so that the team did not round into form until the St. Peters- burg game, which resulted in a startling vic- tory for the Terriers over their ancient rival. Despite the fact that the team averaged only one hundred fifty-four to one hundred fifty- five pounds, the lightest team in years, only two games were lost, one heartbreaking eight to seven defeat by Robert E. Lee, and the other the disappointing first period collapse of the green youngsters before the veteran Plant team on Turkey Day. The highlights of the season were the vic- tories over St. Pete, Lakeland, and the highly talented Pensacola team. Only seven letter men will return: Velasco, Wfaggoner, Griffin, Adleberg, Shiro, Massey, and Hatch, with several promising recruits from the minor H and Pup squads: Sucarichi, Harris, Middleton, Sweat, Orihuela, McLeod. Roberts, Pool, Schoeneck, to carry the Terriers to the thick of the '35 championship drive. LYJJ19-is fe 'Z' COACH XVALTER BURRELL -aagf S7 -n. g Football players PAUL ALFIERI-The other of the Alfieri twins was one hundred seventy-Five pounds of concen- trated dynamite when he chose to rip thru thc opposing line. SAM ALFIERI-Sam was a consistent, hard- working tackle who gave everything he had when on the gridiron. AMERICUS SPOTO-There was no one on the team who could hit the line with more terrific force than Monster. His short statue was his only fault. VINCENT PALORI- Vin's three years ser- vice, during which he held position of guard, were rounded out by his being elected All Big Ten guard and honorary team captain at the end of the season. DICK BETTIS- Dick's consistent end play, fine boosting, and genial leadership made him outstanding choice for many all Big Ten Teams. RICHARD SPOTO- Dick is the finest all- round half back Hillsborough has produced in several seasons. His running and passing was a feature in every game. MARTEENE KEENE- Marty was but one hundred thirty-two pounds of concentrated en- ergy but his doggedly persistence Cso true of Terriers? and his dazzling speed made outstand- ing ground gains for the last two seasons. VICTOR HATCH-Although only a sophomore he steadily improved his game and won a regular berth at full back. ORLANDO MOLINA-Played both guard and tackle with credit. ,- -..QH Eg..- I Football players ROY VELASCO-Lit was a spark-plug helmsn-ian who handled team with the coolness and smart- ness of a veteran which easily won him the posi- tion of outstanding quarter-back of the state. J. B. GRIFFIN-Our string bean center whose everlasting fight won him a permanent post among his heftier teammates. ALFRED MASSEY-Al played a Hghting game as a guard, though only a junior. ROY WALLACE-Played a steady consistent game thruout the season as right half back. WILSON WAGGONER-BL1ddy's scrap and de- termination developed him more rapidly than any other tackle in the state. We expect him to be the mainstay of the '35 team. He received state-wide recognition and made the All Big Ten Team. GONZALO GRANELL-Mainstay of the team in position of left end last season. His gradu- ating will cause a deep loss to the team. KENNETH ADELBERG-Adle promises to han- dle one of the vacated tackle positions in great shape next fall. ELDRED SWAIN-Blackie was a genial mana- ger who did his best to keep the Terrier togs in first class condition. GORDEN GARDNER-We regret that this stal- wart of the Terrier line was with us but one season. He played a beautiful game as tackle and by the end of the season had developed into first class at this post. PETE SCHIRO-Pete was another green sopho- more who showed steady improvement throughout the season. vw so S9 Cl166T l.6dCi6I'S Mr. McMullen is to be commended on the fine work of his proteges. Miss Shannon and Miss Kensinger, with the cooperation of the Home Economics department are due a great deal of credit for their work on the capes for the Thanksgiving game. Cheer leaders were: Billy Peeler, finsetj, Head Cheer Leader, Roy Santierzo, Freddie Fox, Lois Terry, Vic Del Valle, Helen Del Valle, Joe Messina, George Hayman, Joe Cancella, and Murray Roberts. The Cheer Leaders were the nucleus of the cheering section at every game. They are due a great deal of credit for the arousing of school spirit and getting the student body behind their team. They spent long hours of practice and had representatives present at every football game of the season. Pup Squad Since the abolition of junior high football the Terrier Pup Squad has been the proving ground for Varsity candidates. These future Terrier Stars toiled faithfully day by day, having done much to push their big brothers of the varsity squad into their place thru their successful season. -..ggi 50 fy..- basketball The 1934-1935 Basketball Team produced the best season in years. After a fairly slow start they reached their peak in the district tournament where they came thru with flying colors, defeating Punta Gorda, Ft. Myers, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg by decisive margins to win the beautiful District Trophy. The next week they competed in the state meet with the highest expectations of winning the state championship since 1924, but the ugymless' Terriers suffered a disappointing defeat when Miami overtook them in the final minutes of the semi-final game winning with a two point victory. Granell was easily voted the outstanding center of the state, and will be the only man lost to the next season. Schoencek, Valesco, York, and Pool rounded it in aggregation and handled the ball with dexterity and beautiful trumpery. Members of the team were Hector Falcon, LeRoy Sweat, Ed Schoeneck, Lit Velasco, Mario Rodriguez, Eugene McNenney, Emmett O'Barr, Gonzalo Granell, Joe Murrell, Manager, Eugene York, Harry Toole. Total Hillsborough Score - - 736 Total Opponent Score - - 519 -aff 61 En.- 3' Baseball Red Sweeney, coach of the Terrier Baseball team has done much in building up a splendid team. He deserves much credit due to the fact that he had only two lettermen to start with. The rapid pro- gression of the team has won them the championship of this district and a victory over Mulberry, who is the champion of District No. 6. The Terriers took on all comers during the seasong playing a total of 23 games and losing 2, they scored 125 runs against 39 for their opponents. The pitching of Alston McGahagin and Ynocencio Castillo has been far above the average as these two boys have never had more than three earned runs scored off their delivery during the season. Our catching department has been taken care of in a very Fine style by joe Suarez and John Burnett. Suarez has caught a majority of the games and has been an outstanding player at all times. First Base is covered by Gonzalo Granell a star Basket Ball and Football player, now we have to say he is a star Baseball player because of his splendid playing at First. Rolando Diaz, a first year man at Second Base, has proven his ability to hound that horsehide. Frankie Clementi, a First year man, covered short like a veteran, making hard chances look easy in nearly every game. Roy Velasco, another two letter man, covered Third base and reminded coach of Groth the way he fielded lots of hard chances. Elmer Propper, in Right, W. j. McLeod in Center and Henry Orihuela in Left field made life miserable for the op- posing hitters, catching everything that came their way, and were always hard to get out when up at that old dish with men on those bases. Albert Massey, pitcher, was always ready to do his part and turned in a creditable performance every time he was called on. He will undoubtedly be a big help at the state tournament if the going gets tough for McGahagin and Castillo. Miguel Saca and Eugene McNenney could always be depended on to fill in for an outfielder and give a good account of themselves. The Terriers will Fight at Orlando, May 23-25 for the State Championship. Good Luck! Team. 62 ,- ll this Track Due to the fact that both track and baseball teams were com elled to ractice at Plant P Field this season it was necessary to curtail the squad to a very few men and allow the baseball team to use the ancient Merimack. A Only one previously experienced letter man, Reginald Miller, reported for the team. Ten men entered the West Coast Track Meet to place fourth. Four men were taken to state meet. Miller came thru with a beautiful run in the mile, turning in a new Hills- borough record of 4143.5 a second and a half over the state record, which he might have broken if pushed. Miller scored third in a record breaking half mile. Gordon Gardner, with little previous experience or practice, placed well with a shot put of 45 feet 2.5 inches. Future track prospects depend entirely upon the development of the oval on our own field. Members of the team are: Reginald Miller, Gordon Gardner, Kenneth Adelberg, Tony Jimenez, Ulma Dunbar, Mike Mesa, D. Clark, Denny Hendry, Henry Orihuela, Jack Barber, Frank Calohan. -- -:sf as gf- -- -I i A Tennis Fencing Many of the students did not know that Hillsborough had a fencing team until they gave their first exhibi- tion in assembly. For years they had no fac- ulty sponsor and were directed by Mr. Harry Bierce. Mr. W. F. Lloyd is now faculty sponsor and instructor. Those who went out are faithful and hope to have some competitive matches in the near fu- ture. PL Tennis this year at Hillsboro was ns good as could be expected, but great things are looked for next year with three members of the team returning and with new courts at the school. At the time the picture was taken, the team had played its first match in which they were defeated by the University of Tampa. Negotiations are now being made for a return match with the Uni- versity and for a match with Plant High School. Members of the team are Kenneth Vernon, James Camp, Joe Suarez and Johnnie Ayala, the captain and number one man who is not shown. 64 Golf Due to the fact that the team was organized late in the season they will have only a few matches with rival schools, which are: St. Pete, Lakeland, and Plant. The team, con- sisting of Ynocencio Castillo,Herbert Smith, Eugene York, and Paul Weaver, selected from the school tournament at the Forest Hills Course on Apr. ZS. Cas- tillo and Smith will de- fend the state title, won by the Terriers last year. iis The team, with few experienced men, is estimated to be capable of traveling far, due to the help of Brysson Waggerman, pro at the Forest Hills Country Club, who taught the team many fine points of the game. . , The team organized early in September for their fifth season under Coach Upson. Their preliminary work was practice, and no other teams were organized. Lee Barker was elected captain, and Ed Lyman s e r v e d as manager. Those making the team were: Lee Barker, Rich- ard fRichj Lyman, Lewis Marchand, Ed Nichols, Harry Jepson, Thomas Atkinson, Miles Bierce and John Battle. The first four will rep- resent Hillsborough in the state meet at Win- ter Park. With their early practice we expect first place. -Na+ es Girls, Basketball Miss Hicks, coach. We had two teams, thc Terrier Team, or the Varsity, and the Terrieretts. Mary Cueto is captain of the first team and Margaret Reinhold is captain of the second. The Terriers lost one game to Glenn Henderson in the first half but won the second half. They lost two out of three games when playing off the tie. They played two games with Plant, two with St. joseph, and two with Glenn Henderson. QTotal of four games with Glenn Hendersonj. The Terrier team consisted of Esther Duggan, Odelia Velasco, Mary Houser, Helen Hunter, Gladys Milehman, Rita Harris. The Terrieretts won all six of their games. They played two with St. Joseph Jrs., two with Plant Pups, one with jackson Heights, and one with Phillip Shore. For this splendid record they were awarded a beautiful cup, which was received by Margaret Reinhold in behalf of the team. Members of the team were Ligia Vega, Mildred Stoun, Margaret Reinhold, Elonia Suarez, Argentinia Fernandez, Dorothy jane Owens, Dot Robbins, Phyllis Robbins, Margaret Wright, XVinnic Goodale. 5: Y H ,X '.-.Q mt... . .
