. . . Near the end of first period I received a pink slip inviting me to the counselorfs office. Upon arrival I was mobbed by thousands of people - apparently it was a big party. The host- ess had stepped out for a minute, but shelll be back shortly. Having stood on my feet long enough, l decided to leave. Another bell rings . . . Now what sched- ule are we on? Is it 3-4-5 or 5-3-4, or is that my locker number? . . . . . . The morning stretches on with nothing to do Some of my grafittl freak friends amuse themselves with chalk and board Twelve years in school and this is all we can do. Just think what we will be able to do ln four years' T18

. . . through the narrow opening in the wire fence, strategically planning my way across mud trenches in the practice field. Carefully I thread a trail through wet marshes to avoid pools of quick sand I know are expecting me. Across an impro- vised bridge some kind soul has left behind, and then . . . VICTORY - I have reached the safety of the sidewalks. But that is only one small skirmish in the continuing battle that knows no end. Having reached the building, my mission is to safely reach my locker and avoid being captured by the national guardf, The bell rings . . . Suddenly people spring from nowhere. Their objective is to detain me from getting to class on time. I am carried through endless people, down endless halls, up endless stairs, past endless lockers - none of them mine. Doors and elbows swing out to attack me from all sides. Finally, there it is! Hmmm, am I thinking of last year's locker number, this year's gym number, or this year's locker number? Oh well, it's jammed anyway! Struggling under my load of books I advance towards my first period class . . . 'I7

. . . Sometimes during the day, someone approaches me about the campaign. Their big words and complicated argu- ments about the issues make me glad Ilm not quite old enough to vote. Now and then I just try to get away from it all. I slip into a good book, or just give up and go to sleep. Sometimes though, I have to face what is going on and I take the time to think about it. Being alone, at these times, is the best way to figure things out. . . 19
