Stanley Knapp The Panther Staff proudly dedicates this book to a man who, though a comparative newcomer, has heartily assisted us in planting the banners of Hillcrest on a new high ground. He is patient with our shortcomings, butprods us to efforts far beyond our natural inclinations. He encourages every phase of school activity, but will not let us forget that good work in our class- rooms is offirstimportance. Thoughhe is busy with the affairs of the school, he has become the friend of all his students. He has no favorites among us but gives equally to each of us his best counsel. He is an able administrator and a fair minded disciplinarian and an energetic leader. This chronicle of our school's history for the year 1949 is dedicated to our Principal, Mr. S. Stanley Knapp, to whom we are indebted for his part in our high school education and for giving us a vision of the good years yet to come. ANNUAL STAFF B111 Neary Johnnie Jerome Editor Business Mgr. From this point on you must become more and more the builder. The Community, the State, the Nation, and the World will watch the building which you erect upon the foundation which you have laid. Divide your paper into chapters of twenty pages each for convenience. 3. Prefix a table of contents. . 4. You are on your honor. I. Why did Shakespeare write The Wealth of Nations ? Shakespeare was a good writer, but he was short of cash. He wrote 'The Wealth of Nations so he could talk about money without owning any. He was a nice man, but his razor was dull and he wore funny collars. Shakespeare was not much of a writer, but he wrote Confessions of an English Opium Consumer with variations. I would like to read his works better if he had not written anything. II. What is Milton's 0de to the Cockoo ? I don't know, but I do know about calcium sulphate. It is so hard that it makes the water hard and it has to be pulverized to make it soft. It is formed by the action of aluminum acid molybdate and zymase cyanid. It is found in nature, but not much and it is valuable as a bleaching agent, producing a brilliant red color. It absorbs air and water, but it will not explode unless heated. III. Discuss the main tendencies of the Victorian Age. The firstbig tendency oftheVictorian Age was the use of shred- did wheat in Englandg this caused consternation aI1'10I1g the leiS11I'6 classes. The second was the discovery of chewing gum, typical of the progress of science. The third is the marked use of rubber heels. This is inexplicable. IV. What is your opinion of Byron? Acting upon the advice of my counsel, I refuse to answer and maintain a discreet silence. V. Did Tennyson die before or after his marriage ? Yes, Iguess so. But I like the turquoise shades much better especially this season. VI. What was the date of the nineteenth Centennial? 100 years after the 18th Centennial. VII. Are you a communist? Is this a questionnaire? Alf so, no. If not so, yes. VIII. What did Keats do for the world? He died prematurely. IX. What is your ambition in life ? My ambition in life is to be as smart as Albert McHenry and as athletic as Charles La Rue and as handsome as Leon Boettcher and as tall as Charles Hoff, and as rich as everything. Aside from that, I have no especial preferences or desiresg in fact, I lack ambition. , 552 W 5 W W M imhmmmm: gm. um lm. ..f,A1.11,Jw,.s f, glmamf W A gf iii -L k kL' yi 1 e B 1-. . ' ii ' mg. First? Why L48 fried pies of course. Right End Mitchell Carter -- Mitch's love for laps and wind sprints highlighted 46, L48 his football career. Left Tackle Joe Whitney--Although Smokey loved football he nearly always 46,47,L48 managed to miss school once or twice a week. Right Tackle Jack Granning--Even though he was injured several times it was never 46,47,L48 so serious that after a rest and a drink of water he All-District was ready to go. Left Guard Harold Duncan--If O.B. improves as he did in the '48 he should 46,47,L48 be a cinch for All-District honors in '49 Right Guard Walter Staton-- Sam's tackling .and his fine work while on offense 45,46,47,L48 was one of the highlights of each game. All-District'48 Co-Captain Center Backfield Bob Manner--An expert at deception Bob will be back in '49 to hold 46,47,L48 down the signal calling slot. Quarterback Gilbert Kelley--The only letterman on the '48 team. Gil kept the 46,L47,48 left half position in tact throughout the season. Co-Captain Left Half Harvey Turner--Although he weighed only 135 lbs. Harvey was a L48 menace every time he tucked the pigskin under his arm. Fullback J. R. Simons--.T. R. was the hardest working man onthe eleven in '48 47,L48 and should be one of the mainstays of the team next Right Half season. F2 ESE RVES Johnnie Jerome--Johnnie didn't get to work much on offense except 46,47,L48 punting, but he played first-string defense all the time. Left Half I-Ie loved to tackle the big boys low and watch 'em fall. David Lynn--David was not able to demonstrate his pass snatching 46,4'7,L48 ability due to an early season injury. Left End David Short--No matter how tough the going, Short always managed 46,L48 a word of encouragement. Right Tackle Albert McHenry--Fritz was the fastest lineman on the team and was 45,46,47,L48 always in there scrapping. Right Guard Gene Hooper--Gene should be another scatback to worry the opposition 47, L48 in '49 Fullback Edgar Ray--Although the boys were always shouting athim, X-Ray L48 always managed to stay asleep or play basketball.
