RAMBLER A NEW STEP FORWARD NINETEEN SIXTY-FOUR HILL-McCLOY SENIOR HIGH MONTROSE, MICHIGAN We dedicate our Rambler for 1964 to our old Montrose High School. We were eager to move to our new school but for many this was also a sad occasion. For the seniors and some juniors, this old hall holds many memories of the times gone by— memories of freshmen initiations, hearing the floor creak as you leave study hall, seeing Mrs. Rhoads, stuffed away in her cubbyhole office, and watching the seniors, class af- ter class, leave our midst with only their pictures on the wall to remember them by. Perhaps to the seniors of 1964, the memories in this old hallway, are more dear to them than those they have accumulated in their last year. They are proud to say they attend- ed Hill-McCloy, but they have a greater pride in having been a part of the Montrose High School. Martha Luard, who was a close and dear friend of all who knew her, was killed in a tragic auto accident on October 18, 1963. She was an outstanding student, not only scholastically, but also in her personality and character. As an athlete, she excelled in basketball and softball. She was honored with the American Legion Award as a freshman. Now there is a part of us missing with a dear friend gone. Only a lasting memory remains. in Another loss to the students and faculty was the passing of Mrs. Beulah Willett. She died sud- denly on Jan. 5, 1964. She had taught at Montrose for almost 38 years. Editor of the ' 64 Elambler KAREN CRAIG Assistant Editor LESLEE WARD Yearbook Staff 1964 A Dedicated Group . , . Dedication and reliability are two words that mean so much now and in later life. This year ' s staff has shown so much of both. Others have helped greatly also- the administration, the fac- ulty, and the student body. R. E. Garrett Sponsor Almost all of the actual con- struction of the book was done by Karen Craig, Leslee Ward. Carol Burgess, Millie Friedl, Gayle John- Les and Karen Gayle, Millie, and Carol. The complete staff consisted of, (from left to right); Leslee Ward, Karen Craig, Millie Friedl, Sandy Spauld- ing, Carol Burgess, Gayle Johnson, Sandy Taylor, Jeanne McGinn, Kathy Gutten, Mr. Garrett, and John Brooks. A NEW STEP FORWARD for the Administration The faculty is proud to have such beautiful surroundings in which to work. The extreme change from the old building has provided a new enthusiasm toward their teaching careers. Board of Secretary Duane J. Sholler wr Trustee Durvard Haven Education Treasurer Donald E. Barber Trustee Doyle E. Lyman Trustee Alfred S. Thorsby s u P e r i n t e n d e n t i f? m 1 , t ! The United States is experiencing the greatest revolution in industrial development the world has ever known. The introduction of automation is eliminating many unskil- led jobs. It is estimated that job classifications that employ 63 million people will disappear by the year of 1975. This should serve as a warning to high school students that receiving a high school diploma is not enough. It is necessary to specialize and good grades in school are necessary as a foundation for preparation for the future. It is our hope that the students in the Montrose Township School District will take full advantage of the excellent school facilities that the people of the community have provided for us. Frank B. McCloy Reva Poag tt JLj0 Secretary p r i n c i P a 1 Following four years of planning and speculation we are finally operating in our new magnificent building, the Hill-McCloy High School. Our congratulations are extended to all of our students and their parents for this excellent tribute to public education, and we offer our most sincere wishes to our student body for a successful secondary school career. Montrose completed a winning 64 season by being victorious in its last two outings. Although not heavily effected by graduation, barring injuries, and player improvement gained by experience, we could be a most improved club. Success can only be found in a winning spirit, which gains through victory or defeat. The school, com- munity, and players must Pay the price if we are to gain on this common goal; and only through a maximun combined effort will we realize success. A good Dressing defense in spots coupled with the scoring and rebounding of Dave Thiel and Lyle Taylor have paved the way for the six vic- tories to date. The most important victories coming are at Bentley and on the home court against Bendle. The pressing defense which was an important factor in these two major victories has been a combined team effort led by Jim Stewart and Bob Marston. Two of the four loses have come in league play at the hands of Fenton, undefeated in league play, and Swartz Creek defeated only by Fenton. The girls in action! The girls on the basketball team are a group of hard working mem- bers. They are learning many things from their experiences on the team. They have won and lost games and this has given them experience in how to cope with their emotions. With each game they are learning more about the word team, rather than individual. They have rough competition in the B league, and with no conditioning from other sports they have come a long way in acquiring stamina. There is no so-called star on the team. They are all stars. Each one is as important as the other in win- ning the games. The team will lose and miss three seniors but this happens every year and they have to learn to adjust to this. This group of girls has learned much about adjusting and about basket- ball. Coach Ruth Taylor These girls have worked hard all year to keep up the pep, enthusiasm, and spirit. Montrose is very proud of them. Fight, Go, Win! The combined efforts of these girls gave Montrose a whole new group of pep rallies, cheers, and ideas to make the spirits soar.
