Tv ciw_ I ,V 65 VedicAted to We, the class of ' 63, affectionately ded- icate this Rambler to Mrs. Leslie T. Rhoads. She has truly been a wonderful and help- ful teacher to many students at M.H.S. since she came here in 1943. Mrs. Rhoads was principal from 1945 to 1947. She has been the head of the English Department and library besides being Dean of Girls since then. Since graduation from the University of Iowa, she has also received her Masters Degree in English. Mother Rhoads has been her nickname since being called that by one of her stu- dent librarians. Mother Rhoads enjoys traveling very much. Her main hobbies are reading and listening to music. She loves to visit her cottage at Tawas . . . She has always been proud of past students from Montrose who have gone on to college. Many, many students love Mother Rhoads and certainly wish to show their gratitude in some way. We hope we have shown it in this way . . . 9n MemoviAm Our Rambler this year is in memory of Mr. Jack Leslie, a former bus driver at M. H. S. for many years . . . Mr. Leslie was a friend to all he came in contact with throughout his active life. His death brought sorrow and heart- ache to many hearts, both young and old. We shall never for- get him, his memory forever cherished . . . Editor-in-chief Janice Henry Assistant Editor Sharon Carmody From left to right-Sponsor, Mr. Garrett, Karla Long, Sally Westfall, Carol Burgess, Millie Friedl, Carol DeLay, Leslee Ward, Kathy Mor- gan, Karen Craig, Jan Henry, Sharon Walker, Jenny Kuzniar, Jim Vroman, Paula Jackson, Steve Fejedelem, Sharon Carmody. It has been a pleasure to work with such a talented group of young people on the Rambler Staff this year. A great deal of time and ef- fort has gone into this book to make it original and creative . . . R. E. Garrett Sponsor M nmi tm | Ou Aaminisfrafion 1 .  ' f j r I ' A. The people in 9 districts in Montrose Township and the Bliss and Mclntyre School districts were annexed to make up the present area. The enrollment has grown from 393 to 1,577. We are entering a new stage. A new high school building will be occupied next fall and the enrollment will make us a Class B high school. Your parents are providing excellent school facilities. Let us prove that we appreciate these fine buildings by taking full advantage of our opportunities. Frank B. McCloy Reva Poag Secretary Out Principal Keeps Us 9n Cine Our school year 1962-63 has been a busy but pleasant one. We are assured that when we transfer to our new build- ing our crowded conditions will be relieved, but overall the past year has been inspiring and challenging. Our best wishes go with each individual of our senior class upon his graduation. Favorite saying and where were you yesterday? Alfred Gwillim Ann Hobson Secretary Our Counselor Mr. James Skvarenina has been at Montrose for three years. During this time he has taught English successfully. He has made many friends in our community, expecially from the student body and the faculty. This year, Mr. Skvarenina is our first guidance counselor, and it is a strenuous job he has undertaken. We, the students of Montrose, have a great deal of pride and respect for Mr. Skvarenina, and we appreciate his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He has helped to make school something to look forward to, and we hope he will continue his teaching career here in the forthcoming years. Following the traaition, we were dressed as fools and imbeciles for a day, and told that we were being initiated. The next year, as sophomores, we got our revenge by pulling the same trick on our predecessors. As sophomores we bought our class rings, which were destined to officially make us all members of the tremendous class of ' 63. When we finally made the rank of juniors, we had magazine sales and the junior play. Fair Exchange, to keep up our dragging morale. The Junior-Senior prom was another of our big moments as juniors. Our senior year began with senior pictures, which were soon distributed throughout the whole school. The Christmas card sales and senior play, A Rocket In His Pocket, followed. The class trip, prom, and graduation ceremonies make a fitting ending to the story of a tremendous senior class. 1 1 g [ Dkf 1 |i HB ' ' 26 Underclassmen Jovtd coming l ears 27 juniors Sponsor, Mr. Blackburn; President, Lyle Taylor; Vice President, Jim kTekieleiLSecre- tary, Roger Raleigh; Treasurer, Pauline Rice. f- fy M l V Amos Adams Marcia Adams Don AUett Gary Baird Phyllis Bechtal Richard Brookman Carol Burgess 28 r |p f r IH V qB. % -— ' •. { „ Harvey Case Stanley Conrad Karen Craig Donna Cramer Tom Crawford Carol Delay Cathy Diem Jim Deim Carol Dinnan Dalalee Edwards Judy Farr Steve Fejedelem David Good Sheldon Harrison Nedra Herman Ron Hobson Allan Huber Colleen Hutton Martha Keys Rosemary Lynn Danny McClain Sheryl McGhee Jerry McKone Bob Marston Chuck May Rickie Meehling Barth Middleton Gloria Munger Murray Ostrander JoAnn Passard Larry Paxton Arthur Payne Russell Powell Yvonne Powell Dennis Prince Roger Raleigh Dwight Rice P Pauline Rice Gay Royce Dennis Rush Terry Schneider Walt Shaw Carlene Shook Darrell Sprague Jim Stewart Ed Stroeble Ken Tarrant Lyle Taylor Jim TeMele Dave Thiel Dennis Tupper Dave Vance Onalee Verbrugge Leslee Ward Mike Westfall Jack Wilson Kathy Worgess Sopd omoves Sponsor, Mr. Skvarinia; Presi dent, Pat Horner; Treasurer, Linda Barber; Secretary, Nancy Driver; Vice President, Mike Cooper. The club provides students with opportunities to plan and carry out additional ex- periences related to home- making. The over- all goal of the organization is to help in- dividuals improve personal, family and community living, now and in the fu- ture. The club motto is To- ward New Horizons. This motto is a challenge to re- mind members that their contributions to home life today will influence the kinds of homes they have later. Hall Monitovs Mr. Gwillim, Judy Farr, RoseMary Couchman, Carol Burgess, Muriel Pyne, Lynn Anderson, Jean Eycleshymer-Chairman. Duties of a hall monitor are easy, for they only entail directions set by the school administration. But in many cases the duties become dif- ficult and somewhat complex simply because the fear of friendship between the hall monitors and fellow class- mates might be jeopardized. Duties simply involve col- lecting attendance slips and recognizing the validity of student hall passes. 42 Student Council Back row-President, Jim Stewart; Vice President, Janice Henry; Secretary, Leslee Ward; Treasurer, Margo Driver. This organization is com- prised of representatives from each grade, and has the purpose of representing the student body in the affairs of the school. Assemblies, pre- sented for student entertain- ment, are selected and paid for by the Student Council. Twice each year a County Student Council meeting is attended by most of the class B and C schools in Genesee County. We are very privileged to have Janice Henry as the Vice President of the County Student- Council. Nafiona Honor Society The Montrose Chapter of the National Honor Society has been functioning at Mon- tr ose High School since the spring of 1960. The members of this group are selected by the faculty and are chosen on the basis of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Char- acter. It is in only the top three grades of High School. The National Honor Society encourages the development of the attributes previously mentioned by the students of Mon- trose High School. It also strives to promote the potential leaders needed for our school and our country. Mr. Johnson; Pres. Sandra Belill; Treas. Ann Mosey; Don Bissell, Pauline Rice; Sec. Every school periodically passes through rebuilding periods, when their teams have been depleted by graduation. The Rams gained the lacking experience in the first four games and went on to win two of the remaining four contests. We ended the 62 season by playing some fine football. We are looking forward to the new season with the expectation and confidence that our im- provement will be realized next year. 53 This year ' s basketball team definitely has potential to play above average basketball. The team has good size, height, speed depth and intelligence. When all this potential, coupled with that innate desire for excellence in completion is organized and fun- nelled into a definite team effort, Montrose could have a fine all around team which could set a good example for years to come. I With the completion of the ne ' gym, enough enthusiasm should be generated to inspire both the student body and the team mem- bers to greater effort. We, as a team, are all hoping that we can continue to win in our new g ym, plus, win a few games away from home. The 1962 J. V. Football team was made up of mostly freshmen boys, so the fundamentals such as blocking and tackling were em- phasized. Although the team was winless, they did a fine job playing against boys one and two years older than themselves. We hope that a few of these boys will make fine Varsity play- ers. 3ooi dl Although the J. V. ' s were short on experience and playing out of their class, there was an obvious improvement in team and indivi- dual play. We are hop ing that some of these individuals will be able to help the Varsity hold their own in the coming season . . . No other group in school has to work as hard to be full of pep and show good sportsmanship as they do. They must plan pep rallies, make signs, and give speeches concerning an oncoming sports event. Be- sides all this, they must practice at least twice a week, and yell their lungs and heart out at maybe an average of two games a week. We truly can congratulate our fine cheerleaders on their endurance, spirit, sportsmanship, and un- ending desire to promote our school spirit. Top left: Sandy Taylor, Carol Vantine. But just to be we: grounded in academic subjects which lead to head knowledge is not enough. It is just as important to be well grounded in manners and morals— those things which lead to strong character. Out culture and character should walk together, , Too often they are a mile apart. The elementary school is dedicated to tlie task of training the whole child that he might grow not only in wisdom and knowledge, but also in integrity, compassion, and faith in God and his fellow -men.
