This person. or in our case these people. must be competent and clear thinking. and that is the only way to describe our Board of liducation. No matter what the weather. eyery second .Xlonday night finds the gentlemen of the Board grouped about a table trying to balance the budget or appropriate money for a new typewriter. an encyclopedia, or new drapes for the auditorium. .Xlany serious discussions and much planning must take place to keep our railroad running' smoothly. .Xliss Chapman. the Secretary. plays a big part in this mammoth undertaking that giyes the Highlands lligh School system a reputation for faultless achieve- ments. The outstanding success of the 1950 version of the Highlands football team was largely due to the morale and cooperation of both team-mates and coaches. Experience and courage were not lacking and sometimes spelled the difference be- tween victory and defeat. Many times the Birds had to give their full measure of effort to keep from being conquered. Only championship teams can draw upon these resources and come back when the chips are down. Among the honors the Bluebirds won were the N.K.A.C. Championship and a top rating in the State. Several boys won individual honors bring- ing even more prestige to the team. Bob Curtice and Pete Thress made the All-State team and Bob won All-Southern recognition. Pete Thress and Tom Rohrer made the All-Post team of which Pete was Captain. 'llllllllll' CUUNCIL In order to facilitate the workings of the student government this year, the law- proposing powers of the Delegate Assembly and the law-passing ability of the student council were combined in one organization-the Student Council, which fulfills the duties of the former as well as its own. The wisdom of this move has proven itself in the efficiency of governmental functions. Under the leadership of its officersg Fred Tillman, Presidentg Ted Braun, Vice-Presidentg Diane Garretson, Secretaryg and Dick McCracken, Treasurer, the Student Council has this year sponsored many worth while projects. Foremost among these was the fabrication of a number of Moral and Spiritual Codes dealing with School and Community life. These codes were drawn up from suggestions by students themselves during special meetings under the guidance of council members-each committee taking a certain phase of school or community life. In addition to this the student gov- erning body sponsored several dances as well as an exhibition of skill by the fa- mous baskethall trick shot artist, VVilfred Hetzel. The Council is extremely grate- ful to its faculty advisor, Miss Moery, for her untiring efforts in its behalf. 50 Qing' V yi 3' rss Af is First Row: Braun, Morlidge, Ross, XValkenhorst, Arey, Baumer, XVilemon, Curtice, XVasser, Rawnsley. Ili-Y PAUL STUNTEBECK President This year the Hi-Y Club entered the fourth year of its post war existence. Under the able leadership of its President Paul Stuntebeck, his successor at midterm Charles Biltz, and the spon- sor, Bernard Sadosky, the club continued to full- fill its purpose Hto create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. In accordance with these high ideals the club raised its stand- ards of membership, heard guest speakers lec- ture on timely important subjects, and in con- ? junction with F.H..-X. sponsored a program to promote understanding of high school youth 1 problems. Through moments of disappointment and de- pair. through a serious crisis caused by rising costs, through quarrels, feuds. and revolutions, the Hilltopper has carried on to the end of its fourteenth successful year. Experience in journalism, business, and leader- ship is derived from working on the school paper. It serves the entire school as a record of events and activities and as a student forum. ENl0ll-JU l0ll llllilMil'l'lC Most schools have drama clubs, but few have as active an organization as the one at Highlands. Under the very capable direction of Xliss Avice VVhite, the dra- matics group presents at least Eve plays a year. The first production of the year was The Vampire Bat, a three-act mystery. Don XValsh, lillen Fister, and Nadya Austin had leading roles. The play was en- joyed by children and parents alike. Next in line were the three one-act plays. This year Everything Nice, 'ASenior Freedom, and HQuiet Please were on the program. The first one in the group was a comedy in which Barbara Julien, lfllen Fister, Don XValsh, and Ricki Caldwell starred. Claire Albershart, Bob Smith, and Janice Seibert had leading roles in Senior Freedom. 'cQuiet Please was another comedy in which Ray Steele, Charles Biltz, and Saranne Howes ably displayed a great deal of talent. All this cannot be accomplished, however, without a lot of hard work. All year long our young Thespians spend two class periods a week learning the techniques of the theater. Rehearsals are held in the afternoons and evenings. Although plays are the main features of the classes, various members enter the speech contests. Highlands is proud of its young actors and actresses. 55 l-lx'crx ill-fC1'llllHIl. cxccpt l'vl'lkl.lX. rlw Qxm rcwumls xxirlm lmll llflllllflllif il xxlwisrlcs of tlw lllL'llllJL'I'5 ul' rllc llirls' .Xtlxlcric .X5SUL'l11I'lHil. Among the largest of these is the chorus, which meets every Monday and VVednesday afternoon. For half an hour on these days the auditorium resounds with selections, which range from Handel's Messiah to the recent arrangement of the Night Before Christmas. Although the chorus members join because they love to sing and enjoy singing good music, there is a great deal of hard work that must be done for the many appearances the group must make. Last year the glee club accepted over forty invitations to sing at various public and private gatherings. All audiences were pleased with the exceptional work of the boys and girls. Within the chorus proper are these other groups: the special chorus for use when space will not accommodate all of the eighty regular members, the boys' quartet, and the girls' sextet. Besides the Christmas Concert and the Spring Festival, which were very beautiful, the chorus took part in the popular Highlands Minstrel. For three nights the greater part of Ft. Thomas enjoyed the glamour and glitter of a good stage pro- duction. Radio, too, entered into the curriculum of the chorus and the group was heard on stations YV.Z.l.P. and XV.C.P.O.-T.Y. To culminate the year's activities a picnic and dance were held for members and their dates in the school stadium.
