Salutatorian and Valedictorian speeches were given by Pauline Buchner and Gail Burton. Bill Rogers, retiring class President, pre- sented the Class Key to Jay Howard, June prexy. Colorful, swirling gowns and nifty-looking tuxedos were the dress for the Seniors' big dance, which fol- lowed the banquet a few days later. The semi-formal Senior Prom was held at Veterans' Memorial, the main attraction being Don Barrie and his Orchestra. Heading the Prom Committee were Betty Filinger and Eric Lindbloom. Faculty Adviser was Mr. Paul Jones. . . . ant! 264066 u HIP is 1 gee. 1-filmff 1 syn... lm x 'FQ- Gail Burton Pauline Buchner Q ,A , .TAY HOWARD -Re-elected second term. . . The Nursery School at Highland Park, supervised by Mrs. Clara Strong, is well- lmown as one of the best in all the state. Students in the ninth and twelfth grades are required to spend some time in the nursery, working and playing with the children, and in the twelfth grade espec- ially, observing and writing reports on the children in connection with sociology classes. The Nursery School is not only a service to the community, but it also benefits the students who learn what to expect from these three-and-four-year- olds, and how to take care of them. 'I'he students learn how to adapt the text-book methods from sociology class to every- day situations. At the far left is a sociology class dis- cussing their experiences in Nursery School. Typing is one of the basic skills which every high school graduate should have. It is necessary for any office position and many excellent jobs are available to anyone typing fifty words or more per minute. The placement department finds office employment for any student who is qualified at the time of graduation. At the end of the two years of typing which are offered, the student should be a proficient typist. T 01169 of M045 Together Highland Park's two libraries hold 14,800 books. Besides the books, magazines, vocational and pamphlet files, they have a large reference book selection. Assisting the head librarian is a student staff. These assistants help other students find books and carry out other responsi- bilities in the library. This not only promotes smooth operation of library, but betters the relationship between the stu- dents and the library. It helps to make the library a pleasant and effective place in which to work. Student assistants ac- quire important skills through co- operatively working together and through assuming responsibility. Sienna The picture at the left showsastenography class being shown the fundamentals of shorthand. To enter a stenography class you must have completed one year or more of typing and have at least a C in college english. About eighty per cent of the girls who finish stenography go into clerical work after graduation. To spur the girls on to higher goals, awards are presented to the ones who reach speeds of 60, 80, 100, 120 words per minutes during 5 minute readings with less than 3 per cent errors. Transcriptions are written by hand and also typed. 45 'mf DESIGNED AND EDITED BY THE STUDENTS OF HIGHLAND PARK HIGH SCHOOL, HIGHLAND PARK, MICHIGAN, NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY- THREE. jufure Wecganicb river raining The driver training class is one of the most popular classes in school. They plan and cook meals, balance budgets, clean house, and sewjust as theywill do when they have homes of their own. Besides the homemaking labs, there is an advanced sewing department in the high school building itself. In these classes senior girls make entire wardrobes at great savings of money. Many girls make all the clothes for the Wash- ington Trip. Here at Highland Park for the 9B's and 9A's there is a required course called exploratory which is really an introduction to the vocational and commercial departments of the high school. Both girls and boys spend a few weeks taking such courses as printing and home mechanics. The remainder of the semester is spent in either an introduction to typing or a gardening course. The purpose of the exploratory program is to acquaint the students with Highland Park's i unique vocational program and to create interest in typing and other courses in the commercial department. 1 I l lk .2 J? , 5 A 5: I X p A 4 v-rl'- il i '12 T sn 'N-6,11 ff vrlg- .ifr-7-74 --V ,, H... rw-,Q-,TT Egger- W5 xxx. 11 1 . Things were not as bad as the record would indicate, however. Playing the roughest schedule in their history, every conceivable bad break plagued the Mackmen. When better basketball is played, Highland Park will play it! Once again in 1953 the Highland Park cagers proved this state- ment as they won 17 out of their 19 games, and took their third straight B.C.L. championship and Regional crown. Lady Luck intervened, however, as the Polar Bears fell just short of re- peating their State Class A Championship of 1952, losing out to Lansing-Sexton 55-53 in the semi-final state tournament game. The KEY man in the successful Parker drive was George Baby Duncan. Playing his third year of Varsity ball, the Bean led all Bear scorers, and for his excellent play was named to several All-State teams. Other standouts included George Lee, Bernie Jones, Don Anderson, Jim Engram, and Larry Thomas. The biggest bad break encountered by the Winkmen this year was the loss of James Engram through a mix-up in the recording of his age. The mistake was not noted until the eve of the State Tourney, and consequently he was barred from all post-season games. 84 F ' jf 4,- E ' -1 B rf A .. 1. A mere 2 1X2 pointsis allthat stood between Highland Park and the State Class A Track Championship last spring, as the Parker thinclads piled up 18 U4 points to trail only the winning Saginaw High School and second place Pontiac High at the East Lansing meet. Having one of the smallest squads represented, the Bear team of James Engram, Bernie Jones, Jadwaa Ahmad, Luke Collins and John Grotewohl picked up one second, three thirds, one fourth and one fifth for their 18 lf4 points. Going into the final event, the Parkers needed a first place in high jump to cop the crown. Hard luck set in, however, as Bernie Jones' fingernail barely brushed the crossbar, giving the Bears a third place in the event and in the meet. ln the Regional tourney held at Monroe, the Parkers, however, didn't do quite as well, as dark-horse Grosse Pointe took the flag from the league-leading Fordson Tractors, with the Mackmen finishing third. In the regular season the cindermen placed second in the B. C. L. race with a 5-1 record, losing only to Fordson in regular season activity. f .ff . K 4, -4, Q . LAND BILL BLACKMER . . P I' . 5' 5? We hadabetterteam than the championship team of the year before, but the breaks were against us. With these words Coach Frank Pellerin summed up the 1952 baseball season. Plagued with injuries, bad breaks, and an inability to hit in the clutches, the Polar Bear nine skidded from first place contention into a tie for fourth place. They were able to score only three runs in the last five games. The excellent pitching of Elbert Hollis was unable to compensate for the .199 batting average posted by the team. In Border Cities League competition, the Bears posted a 4-6 record and split with Hamtramck in two non-league encounters. Two of the losses were by one run, and three of them were by two, showing that a few lucky breaks at the right moments could have easily reversed the Bears' record. The leading hitter was Jimmy Anderson with a .355 average, followed by Hollis at .333. DON COLE KOUTFIELDD 1 . Like any other competitive sport, letters are given, along with one quarter credit for good attendance. Springis the practice season when the girls go out on the links and get the kinks out. In the fall comes the tournament when Highland Park plays three or four Detroit high schools. Last year was the fourth All-City High School Tournament, with forty-seven girls from eight schools participat- ing. These are the tech- niques the girls of Miss Marilyn Yarmain's Modern Dance classes used to limber up for the Annual May Dance Concert. Music in Motion was put on before an invited audience. The main object of these classes and concerts is to develop rhythmic co-ordination and to give the students poise and confidence. Modern dance has no perfect style or pattern as in conventional ballet, but is built around various moods.
