At an early date about thirty men were cutfrom the regular squad and put in charge of Coach Ruggles. Twenty-seven of these men remained through the season, even though some of them did not get into a game except scrim- mages. It is this sort of spirit that develops a team. and the boys are to be highly commended for it. A schedule of eight games was played, and the season ended with a percentage of 500. Three games were won. three were lost, and two were tied. These games gave the boys much experience which should prove a valuable asset next fall for those who make the varsity. RESERVE BASKETBALL Coach I-lorning's reserve basketball team finished the 1925-26 season with a percentage of .500. having won six out of twelve games. At the opening of the season prospects for a good team were dim, but in a few weeks the team began to take form showing up some real material. John Rutherford was the high point man of the season, having sixty points to show for his work. Three of the veterans, Rutherford. Golden. and Struthers. will graduate this June. No doubt the varsity will claim the remaining fellows, all of them being good players. . Says Coach Horning, Hlt was a very successful season. considering the time and place the team had to practice. The Highland Park thinclads registered victories over Northern. 5 Flint. Eastern. and Western. and were defeated by Northwestern and Cass Tech, probably the two strongest teams in the city. if not in the state. Captain Harold 'iInky Oliver. high point man of the season, established a new indoor record for the pole vault. in the Highland Park gym. clearing the bar at 10 ft.. 10 in.. thus beating the old record of 10 ft.. 9 in.. established by Albert Thorp in 1922. Two more gym records were established during the season, one in the Western meet by William Langdon. who heaved the shot 38 ft.. 4 in. The other was the lowering of the old relay record of 67 2,f'5 seconds by lf5 of a second. The relay team was composed of Ramsdell. Schneider. Oliver. and Peters. Captain Oliver was taken to the National Indoor lnterscholastic championship meet at Urbana, Illinois. an honor which few receive. only eleven men being taken from the entire city. At the beginning of the out-door season Richard Ramsdell was elected cap- tain of out-door track. Prospects for next year's team are good. although a number of men will be lost due to graduation. Those finishing school in June are Captain Oliver. Kaplan. Langdon. Hands. Booth. Botsford. Cierdan, Baxter. and Cohen. Although no dual meets were scheduled. men were placed in the city and state meets and early in the season an interclass meet was held, Joe Wheeler carrying off the honors for the sophomores. Coach Ruggles hopes for a winning team next year, as all of this year's men will return except Gerdan. Page One Hundred Five
