ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS DON O'QUINN Sunday in the park: Mr. O'Quinn and his children enjoy a swing ride. ALL SMILES FOR H . P . Mr. Don O'Quinn taught physics for 13 years at HP before becoming vice principal, a position he has held for 3 years. Mr. O,Quinn describes his job as basically 'fproblem solving, although discipline is also a big job. He feels that the advent of the computer is the biggest change that has af- fected his job in recent years. Mr. O'Quinn has the highest opinion of HP students, even though he always notices a 16 EDITORIALS distinct change in seniors as graduation approaches. A graduate of Stephen F. Austin University, Mr. O'Quinn is currently working on his doctorate at the Univer- sity of Texas. He enjoys reading in his spare time, as well as hunting, fishing, and working on cars. But he reserves most of his leisure hours for spending time with his family, including his five active children. CLAIRE ANDERSON Away we go: Miss Anderson lends a hand at a balloon show FIVE YEARS AT H . P . Miss Claire Anderson, assistant principal for grades 9 and 1 1, is looking forward to her five year pin at HP this spring. Miss Anderson, originally from Austin, earned her degrees at the University of Texas. Prior to coming to HP, Miss Ander- son taught for eight years in grades 7, 8 and ll. Having recently bought a house, she now counts yard work as one of her spare time activities, though she also likes to hunt for antiques and to attend sports events. Her recent experiences with hot air ballooning have made her a devoted fan, and she has attended hot air ballooning shows in New Mex- ico for two years. Miss Ander- son remarked, I really enjoy working with HP students. It's nice to be a part of a school where such a high percentage of the students go on to college, and most parents are supportive of the school system. Her long range goals may later include a step to the administrative of- fice, or back into the classroom.

PRINCIP Tom Monroe ..., One: Mr. Munroe and Miss Anderson look in on a pep rally skit. Two: Mr.Munroe gives some advice to his terrier Cricket. A N OTABLE PRINCIPAL Tom Munroe, the principal at Highland Park, has been in the school system for 23 years, starting his career as a mathematics teacher at HPHS. After serving as assistant principal, Mr. Munroe became principal of Hyer Elementary School, and 1982 saw him return to HPHS as principal. These days Mr. Munroe is being kept busy by the House Bill 72, which is bringing a lot of changes to education in Texas. Teacher evaluation will be different from other years, since each teacher will be rated and placed on a certain level of the teaching ladder. Students are also being made to toe the mark scholastically, although Mr. Munroe feels that HP students are already superior to other high schools. Mr. Munroe values the com- mitment that students and their parents are willing to make towards getting a good education at HP. His main concern is that conditions are right for quality instruc- tion to take place. Mr. Munroe is busy all year round, even in the summer, when he supervises summer school, keeps his eye on housekeeping chores in the school, and interviews new teachers. ln his spare time, he enjoys cooking and spending time with his wife Sara, who models for the Kim Dawson Agency. His oldest daughter is a Univer- sity of Texas graduate living in Austin with her husband, while his youngest daughter is a junior at the University of Virginia. EDITORIALS 15
