There have been many changes here at Highland as well as in the world as a whole. In the last year America had many tests of courage and endurance; with the seizure of the American Embassy in Iran and the capture of 52 American people. After long months of talks, the two nations compromised (make agreements to each others satisfactions) and the hostages were released. In 1980 along with the changing of Carter to Reagan, the economy will be changing too. for better or for worse, it remains to be seen. Enough about the rest of the world. Highland too has made many changes; the new 7 set schedule is just one. the changing of staff is another, new faces, and strange little freshmen, who sooner or later have to grow up to be seniors someday. Changes are good and changes are bad. but we need changes to help us grow and understand. 2 Progress is the law of nature. It moves in long waves, but it doesn’t necessarily follow a straight line through the years. Sometimes there are setbacks and reverses. Sometimes there are tests of courage, endurance. But in the end the world always fights itself. And mankind moves ahead.” Reagan greets ex-hostages m JO 3 SPRJJSG J980 Jr J Fn ; JJw w Counterclockwise. Mr. Polito. Mr. Rich. Ms. Tufly. Students. especially Seniors, can you remember when you couldn't wait to sit on the Senior heater, to ditch class, to talk down the Frosh. They have really tried to confuse us this year, with the seven set schedule. The new schedule adds a little zing to the week, trying to figure out what class you have next. Even Mother nature is trying to confuse us by making the Frosh even shorter this year than last. Have you made a trip through the cafeteria during second set lately? If you have you would probably swear that there was a class going on in there. Apparently, the cafeteria has become the new meeting place for those who have ammended schedules. 20 bin0 ml)arige Highland gels a face lift.” mujl be the talk of the year! For once we can actually drive by the school without dropping our heads. The students were the key. adding trees, a fence, and even walk paths: hours were spent working on the front of the school to make it presentable. Along with the changes in front of the building there have been changes within the building, starting with the Principals. As we all know Mr. Brian Rich accepted the position of Principal of MHS. Mr. Petralia is now the District One Security Director. Two excellent men. Mr. Hawley and Mr. Hufford. have replaced Mr. Rich and Mr. Petralia and are doing a fine job. Mr. Hower? Well can anyone guess what he's doing this year? From teacher, to Athletic director for the district, to Student Council Sponsor, to Assistant Coach for the football team. The sunny Saturday was shadowed by the 18-0 defeat of the Hornets. Like the game, the float competition was just as surprising, with the freshmen class winning the first place honors. A strong second place finish went to the Juniors; third place was won by the settlor class of 81. Last place float for the 1980 Homecoming was awarded to the sophomore class. The clear blue fall skies and the golden aspen trees make this state very proud. The crystal clear streams flowing down the mountainside look like diamonds on the hill. Golden meadows in the Rocky Mountains with their flourish of animal life, complete the picture for the natives of and the visitors to Colorado. 31 arren Nature gives to every time and season some beauty of its own. and from winter to summer, as from night to day the changes are so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their change. eauty FRESHMEN 1 Freshman class officers: V. We are the freshmen. We finally made it to that special world — high school. Though we may be older and more sophisticated people now that we re in high school, we re still scared to death of anyone over four feet tall. It’s nice to have really close friends because a close friend is very special to everyone, but most importantly. to sophomores. 46 Some sophomores think that being in the I Oth grade is a big bummer. An impossible thing to ask for at the time, because the junior class was trying to feed a gym full of basketball fans. What’s so hard about that? Have you ever tried feeding 200 hungry basketball fans at halftime? The junior class was confronted with this situation while operating the concession stand during basketball season and after school. The drinking fountains were working overtime when the juniors popped their first batch of salty, salty popcorn. Experimentation was the key to their successful popcorn sales. With all those qualities you would think the team is on its way: but since the beginning of the season, the squad has been plagued with injuries. Just as they would get one member back, somebody else would fall from the roster. Coach Fusiek describes the team as the biggest and the most talented team he has coached in his nine year career here at Highland. 'We’ve set our goals high, the coaching staff and I have never put this much time in during the offseason in preparation for the upcoming year. I’m confident that the 1980 football squad is going to come out of this year the first Highland team with the Class AAA State Title Trophy. No newcomer to football Coach Fusiek graduated from high school with All-Conference and All-State honors as a 6’3” 2401b. offensive lineman. Fusiek received a full ride scholorship to the University of Colorado, where he played for four years, and then went on to the professional ranks. If Highland has ever had a chance at the State Title this is the year to do it!” Certainly, this man should know. 100 Hi Hi Hi UU Hi ABOVE: S. Hower. S. Dean. R. Norman. S. Wooten. S. This left the girls swimming team without a coach temporarily until Ms. Heibert took the task a week later. Although the girls didn’t start off the year with a super impressive record. Coach Heibert said ’every one of their meets were important because the girls were out there improving themselves.”. She added that, all the girls are outstanding, not just a few because they are all out there participating.” A new school record was set this year by Rosemary Drajem in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:12.5. against the Norseman. The seniors are all top specialists in their field and we need them all.” Unfortunately the team has been plagued by injury all through the year including sprained ankles and wrists. The scoring system is gymnastics is complicated. Six girls compete in the areas but only the top five girls scoring the highest are added together for a team score. Judges score the girls on a scale of I -10. 10 being the best with only two judges working each area. The toughest competition for the team this season is Northglenn according to Coach Linder. Frank Orten. who just graduated from C.U. in January now holds a full-time job while coaching in the evening. The boys have had to adjust to later practices instead of practicing right after school. Although the coach's job inconveniences the guys a little, they really like him and are glad to have him aboard. TOP: Jimmy Madsen gives a big smile before his dive. The 1980-81 wrestling team started out slow and have not yet met their full potential. Newcomer to the Hornet coaching staff. Cliff Laughflin. says in 81 the wrestlers will do a lot better. There are certain individuals on the team that no one in the state could touch if they put their minds to it. Coach Laughflin also feels that wrestling is a sport that is classified as one of the top skilled events. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication in order to perform. Scott Dickerson, and Mike McCurdy, who were working on the mural for the water treatment plant, which is located just off of 88th Ave. and River-dale Rd. The mural took 2V2 months to design and I month to paint. The three worked on the mural sixth hour, which was the art seminar class, and all the free time they had during and after school. 119 JEWELERS IN THE MAKING 120 At the beginning of the school year, the jewelry class was stung by a break-in and a theft of all the rings and all the metal that were used in the making of the rings. It seems like kindergarten was only yesterday, entertaining you in its own special way. But that was in your youth. And life had not taken its toll on you as you knew it should. Now you have bloomed into the world of high school, where intelligence and maturity are the best tools. You begin to respect the old and the wise. And go to them for wisdom and service. Now the responsibilities and tortures of life are upon you. But one must endure and do what he must do. There will be more suffering along the road. But we must learn to carry the heavy load. Now you say you can't wait to graduate. But is that how your feelings really relate? And in our hearts it will bring great sorrow. Theresa Andrew Changes in Life The tip of a branch woven in silk. Ricky Lott This two act play originally written by Rick Besoyan in the later 1950's is set early in the century at a Colorado Inn high in the Rocky Mountains. This comedy melodrama is based around the life of the innocent and jovial Little Mary Sunshine. The musical begins with Captain Warrington and his men bringing the renagade Indian Yellow Feather to justice, along with helping him to change his ways. While all of this is taking place. Little Mary's Colorado Inn is brought back to a stable position. She accomplishes this with the help of her close companions. Big Jim. Billy Jester. Nancy Twinkle, the forest rangers, and the young ladies of the Eastchester Finishing School. The play just wouldn'; be complete with out a happy ending. So as the drama ends, quite a bit of romance has ended the scene. Mary and Big Jim fall in love. Billy somehow manages to tame the fliratious Nancy Twinkle. Ernesteni and Oscar discover their mutual affections, and last but not least all of the young ladies manage to trap themselves a righteous forest ranager. The musical was presented March 27. 28. and 29. 1981 at 8 p.m. in the Highland Auditorium. f THE N MOUNTIES GET THEIR MAN 129 Above.- Mr. McDaniel. Band: L to R- Mr. McDaniel. D. Madden. M. Grotz. C. Their most recent production is a commercial, under the direction of Mr. Edmondson. It will be released during the variety show sometime in February. The young actors-to-be say. It is a great challenge to be in this class. It also gets us out of the every day class routine. This class requires skill, lots of imagination, and creativity. Mr. Edmondson helps these students work toward their dream ViYIfe 142 STAFF BESIDES, I'M TERRIBLY CUTE!” Mr. Ted Polilo enjoys an early morning game of lennis as a pari of his weekly exercise. As a father of eight and principal of Highland, he is a very busy man. but he always seems to find time to stay in shape. He enjoys sports, particularly tennis, and loves yardwork. Mr. Polito has been with School District One for nineteen years. He spent eight of these years teaching math and social studies. He also served as assistant principal at John Dewey Junior High for one year and was the administrative assistant to the superintendent for a year and a half. Mr. Po-lito came to Highland as principal in 1970. Since then, both he and Highland have undergone a great many of changes. When Mr. Polito first came to Highland, there was no grass in front of the building, there was no swimming pool, no vocational wing, not even an auditorium. But through the years, as Highland grew, these features and many more were developed. One of the biggest changes of all. however, has been just recently, when the front of the building was landscaped. The trees and bushes added a lot of life to the building and Mr. Polito is very pleased: “I get kick out of looking out there!” The 1980-81 school year has brought many changes to Highland, including the diversion from the 6 set schedule to the entirely new 7 set schedule. This system seems to be working out well for everyone. Mr. Polito is also happy with this system: he said. I like it. it adds a little variety and flexibility for the students. Taking a look at the student body. Mr. Polito commented that I think it’s changed but not for better or for the worse. The kids were not as likely to follow orders in the ‘60 s — Kids have really 'mellowed out!” He also stated that. Right now. I am more comfortable with student rapport than anything else ... besides. I'm terribly cute!” Mr. Polito believes that everyone should Start each day with the philosophy. 'I don’t expect things to go smoothly.' We should all demand the right to make mistakes.” He also feels strongly about Treating people the way you want them to treat you.” To the students of Highland High. Mr. Polito is a good principal, a good leader, but most of all. a good friend. 144 HAWLEY’S HOBBY There are many new people here at Highland for the 1980-81 school year, and one of these is Associate Principal Mr. Joseph Hawley. Mr. Hawley has been with District one for twenty-two years. In 1958, he spent his first year teaching sixth grade. To finish out that year and another full year, he moved to the newly opened Monterrey Elementary School, once again teaching the sixth grade. Then, in 1962. Mr. Hawley advanced to the position principal at Monterrey and stayed through 1975. From there, he moved back to Bertha Heid as principal though the spring of 1979. He was then transferred to the administration building last year and worked within the whole district. Now. for his twenty-third year, he is with our school as an associate to the principal. Mr. Hawley is highly impressed with the student body here at Highland. Although he feels. I can't come in and have people accept me. it takes time.” he still knows that students respect him and feel comfortable with him. One of the Hawley enjoys is tennis. For exercise in leisure time. Mr. Hawley plays tennis, camps and fishes. Mr. Hawley has a broad outlook for the future. He feels confident in himself and the student body. The motto that he lives by helps him to feel this way: Every human being has dignity and should be treated accordingly!” ON THE RUN Some people say that nice guys come only once in every dozen. That may be so. but Highland is blessed with three and one with of them is Mr. Billy Hufford. In his thirteenth year in the district. Mr. Hufford accepted the position as assistant principal here at Highland. In the past, he has been in charge of coordination for special students, which he really loved, but I always wanted to be at the high school level, that was my goal in life. now it seems, he has reached his goal. Mr. Hufford's job at Highland is mainly enforcing the new attendance policy and handling the disciplinary measures needed in areas where correction is mandatory. Mr. Hufford also assists the principal. Mr. Polito. and schedules events. In the past. Mr. Hufford would travel from building to building within the district. Now he must stay in one building and he feels that is a big adjustment. He feels welcome by the students and is happy. For enjoyment. Mr. Hufford has many hobbies. One of his main hobbies is coordinator for the Special Olympics. As a ten year veteran of the program, he feels that it is very rewarding. He is state basketball and track coach for the special athletes and loves every minute of it. Other hobbies are making things out of wood, riding horses and running daily. Mr. Hufford is a sentimental man. He has always remembered what his brother told him long ago. I cried because I had no shoes until I saw someone who had no feet. I guess that is really how I feel.” he says. Mr. Hufford believes Everyone should think positive and live a full and happy life.” 145 Above;Mr. Tanner-Social Stud- Top Middle; Mr. Olsen-Social Studies Above: Mr. Nadon-Social Studies . fv i 'tey. So left live it up. we re teniort! • barb Searchris. 154 mid (tea iha I’ll never forget the times we’ve had. Whether they’ve been good or bad. They’ve all meant a lot to me. And hold in store great memories. The things you strive to make the best. Studying for the final test. Going out on Friday night. Hoping things will turn out right. Having friends that mean so much. To think- they’ll soon be out of touch. Savoring each moment spent together. Wishing they could last forever. I want time to stop: to hold. But it keeps going fast and bold. Winter snow, spring fever fun. Morp. Prom. Graduation, then none. It leaves me empty deep inside. To know you won’t be at my side. The times will still go on. it’s true. But good times seem so far and few. - Marie Cavalli. 155 STARK SENIOR-ITIS The first realization in finally becoming a senior is both scary and satisfying, haunting and humbling. challenging and cheering. It's a stark realization; a rude awaking; Wow! I'm a senior. There is talk amongst our peers. Talk of how scary it is to know that we ll be the ones marching to Pomp and Circumstance while relatives, teachers, and underclassmen view the reception of diplomas, some even cry. We cry. We cry for the deep love, the comradeship, and the good times we don’t want to lose; we cry for our years together, our up's and downs, our good and bad. We've been through it all together and it’s always been good to know someone’s always there when we need him. Whether he be in front to lead, in back to support, or beside, to be there; just in case. Time moves so fast. First we re freshmen, naive and free. Next we re sophomores, now we see. Next year’s juniors all are we. Boom we re seniors, busy as bees scrambling and preparing; which path for me? 157 ADVERTISING ratulaitons Class of 198 flpuj for special ClQS5o T I98Z r c.e 5 159 AL'S BAR-B-Q GENUINE TEXAS STYLE Cooked over oak wood SERVING SANDWICHES LUNCHES DINNERS BEEF, RIBS, SAUSAGE LINKS AND HAM BAKED BEANS, POTATO SALAD AND COLE SLAW (Also Other Tasty Bar-B-Q Meats) Hot dogs and Chill dogs CALL IN YOUR LUNCH ORDER! 288-5667 NOW OPEN AT York Plaza Center E. 88th Ave. York St. (across from Highland) Phone: 287-037 I Monterey Auto Parts, Inc. we carry High Performance Parts 9150 N.
