Talented students Contribute One of the goals of Highland's student body was to acquire the ability to accept responsibility and function independently. Convocations during the 1968-1969 school year exemplified this ambition. Three major convocations during the year were presented by the Highland Singers. This organization was extra-curricular and the success of their convocations was a result of desire and perseverence. Such tunes as Hallalujua, I'm a Bum, Billy's Mulef, and Mankind Should Be My Businessf were featured. The Thanksgiving and Christmas convocations were created and presented by members of the Student Coun- cil. The Christmas convocation featured members of the Dramatics Club. They presented a skit, written by Van White and directed by Mr. Clark. The underlying theme ofthe skit was the inability of modern man to communi- cate the real meaning of Christmas. The highlight of the year was the convocation at which Governor Whitcomb officially invited the March- ing Highlanders to the Inaugural Parade in Washington. The last convocation of the 1968-1969 year was held on May 20 to honor outstanding members of the senior high. Debbie Scott received the Valedictorian awardg Mary Beth Hayes received the Salutatorian awardg and Tammy Spangler and Mark Ray were honored as the outstanding seniors. Larry Swindell was the outstanding freshman. Other awards presented were the agriculture awards, athletic awards, Student Council awards, the departmental awards and various community awards.
