v1 ,,W,,..11l111wltl ' ,. 11 ll Teachers leaving the Re-9 school district as full-time teachers were honored at faculty luncheons on May 25, 1973. Each was presented with an attractive plaque by a member of the Education Association. Mrs. Hazel Chick is leaving after 31 years ofservice in the high school. During those 31 years she primarily has taught home economicsg other classes were college prep English and psychology. Her aim in teaching was to try to make young people recognize their own potential and to be themselves. After doing some traveling and visiting, she plans to become involved in community work outside the educational realm. Mrs. Laura LaBorne has spent 14 years in the high school teaching Spanish, French, and Latin when it was in the curriculum. In her teaching, she has attempted to make the languages adaptable to the needs of the students and fit that need on a broad scale. Her future plans are in- definite after the usual summer vacation. She has many hobbies and no doubt will be active in community work with her husband who retired from teaching couple of years ago. Highland Re-9 Education Association And School District Presented Plaques To Four Teachers Mrs. Merna Burkhart found the younger students more rewarding in her teaching field. She has spent 23 years teaching in the elementary schools in the Ault-Pierce- Nunn area. Her main desire was to give each student a good start in school by teaching the basics in learning. Without that base, a child could soon run into trouble in the higher grades. Without a good foundation they can become frustrated and often may lead to drop outs. She enjoyed teaching the young students since they seem much more spontaneous and presented a much freer process of thought. As for the future-perhaps becoming a teacher's aide next year. Mr. Cordell Hailey has devoted 37 years to educating children and coaching. He has spent 19 years of those years in the Highland District mainly at the junior high level. He has quite an interest in his garden and expects to find winter employment. ln talking with these people, one will note that none ex- pect to retire but expect to become active in different areas of work and activity.
