The 1963 7enith DOT BARRICK and ANN SURRATT Co-Editors ELAINE GREENE Business Manager DR. C.E. MOUNTS Faculty Advisor Published by the Student Body of HIGH POINT COLLEGE High Point, North Carolina Some aspects of the college experience are universal, Every- one who has ever attended college has known the sweetness of the stolen moment alone in the midst of the jungle of reports, deadlines, meetings, papers, and exams. He suffers from the ticangs resultant of late study. He exposes himself to the ele- ments as oft as does the farmer. He hursts inside when the beam of truth breaks his veil of uncertainty. Beauty, hatred, insecurity, ecstasy, supreme ignorance, boundless knowledge, fear, anger, joy, and love are felt in the superlative by the struggling inhabitant within the academic walls. Any college student can tell you this. He can also tell you about . . . m tci n . . . the chemistry experiment which had to be rerun six times . . . the wonderful surprise birthday party I - 1 . . , the warmth of real friendships . . .the intramural relays with their laughter and the promise of aehing muscles . . , . . . the admiration, joy, and envy that accompanies a new ring . . . the good nights the unforgettable parties the revelation of a conference the first long-distance call home . . , and 1,675,893 other related incidences. But n ore than that, he must also be able to instill in his students a sense of responsibility and challenge. He must inspire them to work toward goals which may at first seem impossible to attain, but are necessary if the students are to be proficient in (lie field. At High Point College we have such a professor as this, who devotes himself with all his talents to his stu- dents. His classes may be the most difficult a student has ever encountered, but in the end each one is ap- preciative of the intensive instruction received. For the inspiration which he has been to all stu- dents, for the higher goals he continually seeks and for his exceptional ability to motivate his students to a high plane of learning, the Senior Cass dedicates this 1963 edition of the Zenith to DR. As you reach graduation day you wonder what became of those years that suddenly fled. It is our earnest hope and prayer that you found something on this campus that you will carry throughout life. We hope, too, that you found opportunities for self development and expression in all of the many experiences, hoth good and bad, that you had while in college. We hope that you have not only acquired invaluable factual knowledge from your books and classes, but even more important, a sense of values— a yardstick— that will help you apply this knowledge, make critical examinations, and draw sound conclusions for the betterment of your world and all of mankind. May God ' s richest blessings be upon you. Sincerely yours, Wendell M. Patton President 22 The First Lady and friend! w ■ life] 23 W. Lawson Allen Director of College Relations Jesse L. Among them are a friendly smile, a helping hand, a lasting friendship, devotions at 10:30, the required dorm meet- ings, and a thousand others. What gir! does not remember the first call down , phone duty conflicting with a special date, or throwing the girl with the new frat pin into the shower? There are tests and exams, and double derrerits for call clowns, but there is also the fun, the friendship and relative harmony of the dorm. And of course there is the dorm council, that ah important body which we elect, and then at times wonder if wc really did, to guide us and inform us, and to use a little discipline if needed! f icy Harlc our herald angels sing , . . And then we wait— for applause, for comments laud- atory or critical, for anything in terms of response. Be- cause response is what we seek. The Student Christian Association, of which every student on campus is a member is similar to a missile base; it is a launching pad for Finch lectures, church- student relationships, assembly programs presenting summer job opportunities and opportunities for campus religious affiliation, annual caroling service, can -can par- ty, and the all-important Religion-in-Life Week. The purpose of MSF is to provide a Christian com- munity for the Methodist students of the college, in which they find fellowship and fun through study, recreation, and worship. The programs of MSF are purposely varied to give insight and information of use to the students, and to broaden understand- ing by examining the knowledge of others. MSF shows that the meaning of the Church and its message are especially im- portant in the world of today. 124 BAPTIST STUDENT UNION The Baptist Student Union on the High Point College cam- pus seeks to meet the needs of the members through emphasis on the major roles of the student ' s life. Some of these are spirit- ual activity, Christian fellowship, study and discussion of topics of interest to the members, and participation and cooperation of members in the campus religious program. B.S.U, also en- courages its members to increase their service through local church attendance and work projects. 125 WESTMINSTER FELLOWSHIP The Westminster Fellowship is the organization on the High Point College campus for those students who are Presby- terians. The program of the organization is built around par- ticipation in the college religious program as a whole as well as in activities within the individual group. Meetings feature discussions and programs if interest to all college students, and therefore students of all denominations are welcome at Westminster meetings. 126 Epsilon Sigma Omieron is the professional Home Econom- ics Sorority. Dr. Mounts Advisor Cover of the first issue THE HI - PO What words can best describe the 1962-63 HI-PO? News? Better? Different:- 1 We, the staff, feel that these words are ap- propriate, but they do not give the whole picture of this year ' s HI-PO. We feel that our motto, the Voice of the Students fulfills the description of the HI-PO, This year we have tried to bring the views of the students into focus. We have done this by using as much of the paper as possible for the news of the students. We have also tried to keep the students informed on the activities and policies of the school. We feci that the HI-PO has created a more informed campus, but yet; we feel that there arc still more improvements to be made before we can state that this is a truly respected publication. Perhaps in the years to come the HI-PO will become a weekly paper. We have made a step in this direction by keep- ing the III-PO in the black, instead of in the red. Our hope and aspiration rests with vou, the students, and with the 1963- 64 staff. Howard Barnes, Editor, scans the latest edition. BASKETBALL Coach Tom Quinn When Coach Tom Quinn took over as head basket- ball coach of High Point College in the fall of 1962, it marked the end of an era. For twenty-two seasons veteran coach C. Virgil Yow had directed the Panthers. Coach Yow had been vastly successful over that era, winning the North State championship four times and consistendy producing a winning team. Coach Quinn came to I IPC with outstanding cre- dentials as basketball coach at Newberry College. New- berry, South Carolina. Combining his extensive knowl- edge of the game with set patterns of play, Coach Quinn produced an unbelieveable 22-7 record. The Pan- thers heat everv [earn thev faced, with tile exception of Lenoir Rhyne College, which defeated High Point four times. The 13-4 conference record was good enough for a second place finish during the regular season and the runners-up position for the tournament champion- ship. However, the unfortunate Panthers did not meet NAIA scholastic regulations and were denied a chance to participate in the national small college playoffs. Coach Quinn used the starting lineup all season with one exception. Junior Phil Garrison started at for- ward along with Kirk Stewart. Dale Neel was the center for the first half of the season, but had to be replaced at mid-season because of academic difficulties by Bill Fall in. Barry Smith and Al Trombetta were the guards. Reserves were Richard McGreevy, Larry Nolan, Richard Gu iff redo, Sam Byers, and Roger Herman. Coach Quinn and Co-Captains 180 PHIL GARRISON F. 6 ' 3 ' 205 Junior Clenwood, Ind. The Panthers drew lowly Atlantic Chris- tian College in the first round and proceeded to dispose of the smaller Christians, 90-57. High Point scored 64 points in the second half and five players hit double figures. Phil Garrison led all scorers with 27 points. On February 22 the Panthers advanced to the semi- finals by beating a spirited Appalachian team, 72-60. All five Panther starters hit double figures, with Bill Fallin leading the way with 21 points and 18 rebounds. In the finals for the third straight year, the Pan- thers faced Lenoir Rhyne, their top rival. The hot- shooting Pears clowned High Point 63-47 for the title. Kirk Stewart, with 12 points, was the only Panther in double figures. Named to the tournament team was Bill Fallin, who was High Point ' s top scorer in the tournament with 48 points. All students and faculty members are en cou raged to take part in the intramural program which has be- come an important part of the extra-curricular activity of the college. Intramural teams are composed of fraternities and independent teams, providing each student enrolled at High Point College with an opportunity to part iei pale in the Intramural Sports Program, Since opening its doors in 1924, it has been the policy of the college to encourage athletics, both intra-collegiate and intramural. At this time more than 60 per cent of the student body is participating in the intramural program. Intramural director. Coach Bobby Davidson and his assistant, Jack Wagoner, schedule and keep records and point distributions on each individual event Points are awarded for entering teams, final position of finish, and points are deducted from the total in case of forfeits. Trophies arc awarded to the winner of each event, and an all-campus trophv is given annually to the fraternity , itli flu ' highest number of total points. The fall sports consist of touch football and bad- minton; (lie winter sports are volleyball, basket- ball, bowling, ping pong, and the basketball free throw contest; the spring sports include archer) ' , softball, horse- shoes, track, tennis, and golf. Each fraternity and independent team sends a rep- resentative to each intramural meeting, which consti- tutes the Intramural Council. It is hoped that the intramural program is sufficient- ly diversified to interest almost every student, since there are both team games and individual athletic ac- tivities and sports of a vigorous and non- vigorous na- ture.
