CUMMINGS Heading Our The faculty members instruct, counsel, guide, inspire— rinding it, as William Lyon Phelps has said, not so much their task to impart knowledge as to create enthusiasm. To the heads of the depart- ments fall the tasks of conferring with the students majoring and minoring in their departments, plan- ning the curriculum of their departments, seeing that the department upholds standards of accredi- tation, orienting new teachers, co-ordinating de- partmental projects, and making recommendations for the placement of graduating students. These, the department heads, are the channel through which the instructors work with the ad- ministration. Their goal is to see that their students are adequately prepared to make a living and to make a life. DR. DURLAND DR. DESKINS MRS. LIVINGSTON

- DEAN CONRAD The general supervision of college activi- ties is the responsibility of Dean Conrad, whose duties include teaching, working with the faculty in planning the academic pro- gram, supervising the academic work of the students, conferring with them about grades, credit, and courses, and acting as director of the Summer School. The weight of these responsibilities does not deter him from of- fering to the students his guidance, friend- ship, and sympathetic help with their academic problems. Our Deans DEAN ALLRED Dean Allred works directly with the students, counseling them on their personal problems, adjusting student-faculty rela- tionships, and holding the re- sponsibility for their citizenship. His varied duties include admin- istration and regulation of class attendance, coordination of stu- dent activities, direction of the health service, direction of fresh- man orientation, chairmanship of the parking committee, and teaching. His genial humor and personal interest in them endears him to the students.
