Dean of Students As you enter the office, the smoke screen laid by the ever present pipe parts, and through the haze a warm, friendly voice inquires. What can I do for you? Without further introduction vou know you are in the office of Dean of Students. J. H. Allied, always ready to advise or counsel students who come to him with problems. Dean of Instruction Dr. Harold Conrad is a newcomer to High Point College and to the Southland. In the past year as we have turned innumerable times to him with our questions about credits, hours, required subjects, and any other problem pertaining to academic life on the campus, we thank the Fate that sent him to us. Already he has proved a friend, ally, and an invaluable asset in his capacity as Dean of In- struction. tration 1916 A. B. Williams. Bursar . P. Saliiida night . . . willi that special someone. . . , Freshman Class Just Give Us Time Here we were, tlie mighty seniors from our respective high schools, inferior freshmen all over again! It just didn ' t seem possible that within three months ' time we were no longer the looked-up-to graduates, hut greenies to he shown and taught a completely new way of life. Soon, however, after getting settled in our rooms and taking placement tests, that re-horn leeling disappeared, leaving us with the hopes that soon we too would be in those lucky numbers of upperclass- men — those students who so carefully explained why to get this professor or that, or the ones who pre-warned us about over cutting and hoard meetings, and those encouraging spirits who de- lightedly frightened us nearly to death about freshman beanies us the Judiciary Council. But when basketball season started up and Thanksgiving holidays relieved us ol those everlasting top pieces I better known as beanies), we discovered, after taking our precious cuts to go home for the first time, that being a freshman wasn ' t so bad after all. Second semester came and with it more ease and confidence in ourselves, for we had managed to struggle through our first big exams. We looked forward to our freshman dance and other activi- ties through which, by hard work, we were drawn closer together and felt for the first time that we really had a place here. This was really eollege. Now. for the Class of ' 59. freshman year is all over. And as we look back over this, our first year as college stu- dents, we feel very proud of the way we came through it. Nothing will ever re- place our memories of freshman year, but we eagerly await to add to these. recollections of future years at High I ' oint College. 1 1 OFFICERS. left to rifiht: Richard Mailman. Intramural Athletics I lir planning l the intramural program for High Point College is handled l Mr. Arthur Paschal ' s Physical Education class. Each year, prior lo piil 15. prepai ' ations ari ' made lor the ensuing intramural season. Football, basketball, Softball, volleyball, golf, tennis, and a ping-pong tournament are the sports which are set up lor students participation. The sueees ol the intra- mural program increases annually. This year better than 60 per cent ol H.P.C. ' s students par- ticipated in some phase ol intramural activities. Trophies are presented to ibe winner- and die runners-up in all sports bj the physical education department. The greatest attribute ol our intramural pro- gram is the spirit which develops among the stu- dents who play the sports and those who cheer their team lo victory. The program has become an important part ol the college life of many stu- dents. The bard work which lias been conscien- tiously given lor the improvement ol intramurals has not been in vain because our intramural pro- gram has grown each year. Intramural athletics trulj plaj a vital role on the students stage at High Point College. Intramural Champions Deal the Tekes has become the watchword of all oilier fraternities on the campus ami ' IKK teams are consistent making their opponents eat those words. For the past two years the TKE fra- ternity lias dominated intramural athletics. S far this year the Tekes have swept all ol the sports championships into their fast growing collection. little extra effort had in be made before the Tekes could call the football crown a TKE posse- sion, lint tliev proved their right l the crown bj edging out the Pikas and the Lambda Chi. Led by the pa — inu ol liunnv Cochran anil the receiving of Jerry Royals, the TKE offense clicked ll scores with amazing regularity while their opponents heat uselessly against the TKE forward wall which was anchored by Don Roberts and Mus Levina. Volleyball season enabled a fighting ' I eke team again to show its superiority. The Tekes were followed in the rare h the Lambda Chi and the Sig Eps. Basketball seasi pened with everyone specu- lating on the power ol the rekes. The TKE soon displayed ii- prowess in customary fashion by taking the measure ol all comers. The Pikas led bj Dead Eye Dale Swaiingen ami l he Lambda (ibis with Don Bo Diddley Davis and Ray Whicker threw a scare into the mighty Tekes, but a scare was all thai they could muster. Student Christian Association The Student Christian Association of High Point College is made up of the entire student body. Its operation is handled by a council of three officers, two representatives from each religions organization, and lour advisors. The Student Christian Association Council serves as the co-ordinator of all our religious activities, and its purpose is . . . to stimulate religious life so as to foster a more Christian attitude among students. ' November 6-9, the Reverend Emmett I!. McClarty. pastor of the First Methodist Church in Salisbury, North Carolina, led the -Indent body in a Religious Emphasis Week. The theme. These Things Matter. had much significance lor the students and faculty. Religious Emphasis Week climaxed with an impressive Communion Service. Il influence continues. The Student Christian Association has many varied activities. There are morning devotions Monday through Saturday, and each evening there is time for private meditation and pravcr in I.indley Chapel. Wed- nesday night Prayer Meetings and Sunday Vespers are both sponsored by the Student Christian Association. Recreation plays an important part in the activities of the Student Christian Association. This year the students enjoyed looking forward to the use of some newly purchased equipment. Under the sponsorship of the Methodist Student Fellowship in 1919. the High Point College Student Body agreed to adopt a ten-year-old Creek girl. Yassiliki Dovvna. In 1951. this project was taken over by the Stu- dent Christian Association. This summer the students ' bond with her was greatly strengthened when Dr. Cooke was able to pay her a personal visit. Through her many interesting letters, the students, her foster parents, have come to feel as though she were a member of the family. Endeavoring to d.welop in students a Christian philosophy of life through a wholesome, spiritual atmos- phere, the Student Christian Association encourages worship and participation in religious activities, thus integrating the social, cultural, and religious life of th students. Sophomore Class (.inning Along Fine We. the Class of 5o. have now marked down another year of progress, a year in which we have accomplished some of those ideals Inward which we have aimed during our two vears at High I ' oinl College. This has been a big year for our class and a formative one. We started off our Freshman year united, hut a little shaky. Now we ha e our class spirit and our mem- bers have entered whole-heartedly into the various campus activities, becoming im- portant people in the framework of the col- lege commimit . We can judge a little better whal we want to get out of our four years at High Point College, and are re- lating our interests and picking and chang- ing our major fields. A lew members of our class did not return after the freshman year, and still others will leave at the end of the year. This i- somewhat disappointing to us, but we realize that it is all part of college life, so we set our teeth more (irmly and march on. e as Sophomores have had our proud moments, ironic incidents, and many hours ol study. However, we have learned a lot; and we really feel at home in classes as well as in the bookstore and in campus organizations. Looking back, we can remember this, our Sophomore year at High Point College, as one o| the fullest we have ever known. It will be remembered by all of us as a ear filled will) fun. hard work, many new friends, and wonderful limes. During these nine months, we have climbed a little higher on the scale of maturity, and we. ihe Cla  of 1958. can look forward to our Junior year with confidence and with hopes ol making good the third act of our per- formance in this thrilling drama called college. Highlighting the early season plaj was a sparkling triumph over A.C.C. In the games before Christmas holidays the Panthers passed the centui) mark on six occasions. The Christmas trip was fairh successful as H.P.C. took four games out of six. The Purple Panthers prohahK turned in one ol their finest offensive performances of the season against the Paris Island Marines to gain one of those victories. Against Klon. Jack Powell sustained an ankle injurv which handicapped him and the club for several games. The remainder of the season proved to be very disappointing since lli :l] Point was able to win only four games before the end of the regular season. One of those victories, however, was against a big and potent Lenoir lilnne team, finishing the season in sixth place, the Panthers qualified for the North State Conference Tourna- ment where they were eliminated by Lenoir Rh ne in the first round. During several games this season, the Panthers looked unusually good, but in spite of their bright spots. the had a mediocre season. There were probably many reasons for ibis. Two which were apparent on various nights were lack of rebounding and the lack of hustle. Jack Powell did a magnificent job on the boards, but he just did not receive enough help. Coached l Mr. .1- F. Jones, the tennis team improved with cadi match. After losing a match near the opening ol the season. the H.P.C. baseline wizards knocked off the next fif- teen games in a row and ended the season with an over-all record of 16-1 and a conferen ce record ol 10-0. Giving strong support to Mike in his superb play were Bill Huegele, Vince Leong, and Bill Eller. Mike Reyes-Varela closed out a spectacular tennis career at H.P.C. I winning the singles championship at the North State Conference Tournament. During his lour years as a member of the Tennis Team ol High Point College Mike never lost a sel in conference play. Quite a record! Following eloselv in his footsteps is Kill Huegele who Finished second in the SC.T singles matches; Hill lost only to the invincible Mike during last season. Admitting that graduation look a great deal of talent from the team. Coach Jones is relying on the returning nucleus of Bill Huegele, l!a Whicker, anil Tom MacMahon to provide the foundation lor another successiiil tennis Hercules. In spite ol a leg injur) which hampered his slugging ability. Bill Kiser, H.P.C. first-base- man, led the team in hitting with a .323 average. The pitching staff was bolstered b) the efforts of Frank Miller and Hill Huegele. Miller, pitching sporadically, once went twelve consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Mr. Versatility, Hill Huegele, was credited with both of the club ' s victories over Guilford, The true value of the 1955 baseball season i- not clearly seen in the won and lost record, but in the valuable experience gained l ) members ol the team. Senior Class Beginning oj the End With I ' hil playing the lead, and our own h. Withers as stage manager, the Class of ' 56 took its place Dii stage for this, the last act ol our performance. The curtain rose in Scptemlicr with the shout. Look every- body, we ' re Seniors. We came hack this last September to begin the year oi promise — we were the Class of L956. As seniors, much was de- manded ol ns. and much was given — our time, our energy, our enthusiasm. We worked hard and earnestly to make a real contribution. We accepted our responsi- ble freedom and the positions of leader- ship that came with it. We started the year with a yen toward the luture; now we are casting glances over our shoulders wist- I ' ullv envying the freshmen. Ours was the first (lass to realize the convenience oi walking any place on cam- pus without getting muddy feet. We saw the expansion of a building program which was to enlarge our school by lour new buildings and numerous improvements. High Point College was growing and we were proud to be a part of it. It is true that we have grumbled through lour years ol hard work and long hours, but May of 1950 will come too soon for most of us. But before we assume the role ol has lieens we want to express this once, our heartfelt thanks, to all the people who have made these four years possible — our parents, our teachers, and our class leaders. We are now alumni, parties to the Latin term which simply means those who have gone away. And the things we do have an air of being first now. not last, and certainly not final. This is another begin- ning, perhaps the best of all. f I ' licn boost the mo- rale uilli a liiu nijdil out. SeriiftA Class OITICKIiS. ' lo ri ilil: Margaret Westmoreland.
