1 . _ ' ■ HIXONIAN Volume XLV Published by Senior Class Hicksville High School Hicksville, Ohio 1960 I Never to Be Forgotten Cheer, cheer for old Hicksville High! Shake down the echoes, cheering her name! Send a volley cheer on high; Shake down the thunder from the sky. Although the odds be great or small, Hicksville High will win over all While our loyal sons are fighting Onward to victory! RAH! RAH! RAH! m - mm-a W3SSM mm 4 ■ ■ ,i ■ -■ . : - ■ - ■■ . :• ' - Hearken! Hearken! Music Fills the Air Strains of merry notes, sounds of happy voices, and tones of gay spirits fill the air at Hicksville High School during each school year. The year brings pleasant memories to every one of us. As we walk down the halls each morning, we hear the warm hellos. We hear not only the hum of happy voices, but the strains of merry music classes. Each one of us has those special experiences that we re¬ call with fondest memories. It may be the sound of the high school band at football games, the gay spirits of our team, the personal recollections of us all, and those well-remembered proms, dances, and the chords of “Pomp and Circumstance” at Com¬ mencement. Whatever occasion it may he, we shall never forget that music fills the air in and around Hicksville High School. May I extend my congratulations to you for your accomplishments throughout vour school career, and give praises to you who have attained high quality. Graduation from school is not the end hut merely another step toward the building of a life of value and quality. In the vears to come you will remove this yearbook from the shelves and reflect on valued memories. At that time I charge you to be able to sav. ‘‘I have used my God-given abilities to be of use to my fellow men.” It is mv hope that each of you will have a bright future of your own choosing. Sincerely, NORM AND JONES Superintendent api! Administration Seniors 0 Underclassmen Organizations Activities Sports Advertising and Alumni 9 ' Hicksville Elementary School is an important part of our community. Here the nineteen teachers in¬ struct the students in the basic fundamentals of everyday life. Of great benefit in the elementary program are the large multipurpose room and the cafeteria which serves four hundred pupils. There is also a music program in which the students may participate. The doors of our elementary school are always open to those interested in the educational development of their children. They , Too, Serve Our school board is composed of community- minded individuals interested in the betterment of our school. Although the board is seldom praised or complimented, the members spend many hours of their time appointing an adequate administration and staff, planning for future enrollment, and se¬ curing adequate funds for efficient operation. The school board also promoted the pre-school work¬ shop at the end of August which set the pace for the coming year. Claron Laub, President Bernard Whonseller, Clerk Dr. R. E. Hofmeister 6 Glen Countryman, Vice-President Marietta Stemen William Cleland, Sr. Principal Mr. Ringer, principal of our school, spends much of his time ob¬ serving classes and assisting both the students and the faculty. He helps us to graduate with a well-balanced education by encouraging good school work and outside activities. In order that we might have these outside activities, Mr. Ringer is also our athletic director. We are grateful to have a principal interested in the youth of Hicks- ville. Secretary As school secretary, Mrs. Thiel is busy keeping records of all students up to date, taking dictation and transcribing letters, and performing the many other secretarial duties. Yet, as you can see, she always has a cheery smile for all. 1 ■L-.-ll S i 1 I remember, I remember Where I was used to swing, And thought the air must rush as fresh To swallows on the wing; My spirit flew in feathers then That is so heavy now, And summer pools could hardly cool The fever on my brow. —Thomas Hood 9 We Don’t Spend All IHIHHl ROBERT BREI0ER8M « Ml« «[ « jyor «E!T Sj ' . stain lu jjJB? 8 «E 8RI H Mg , RUTH WJgEL- PHTULIS SWEWEJ SHlfiOfi TiTSTiSOR Unfit 8 IT« SOB LOHGSHaSTH HURT SEUXt UlNCtl BRUSH With the true Christmas spirit, the Future Business Leaders of America collected gifts for the Defiance County Children’s Home. “But Sheriff, you can’t shoot an Ace just before a game!”—a line from 10 Among the many assemblies held this year, a trained dog and bird act was most entertaining, and Don Cover made a terrific snake charmer. Our Time Studying one of the many pep ses¬ sion skits provided by the student body. Hixonian skit—“All right kiddies, smile pretty for the photographer.” “Hey Doc, do you think Mrs. Culler’s going to be able to take this Hixonian skit along with all the other yearbook headaches she’s going to be facing with the 1960 staff?” High School Cooks and Janitor Leona Hostetler, Claudine Burlingame Roy Bauer Elementary Cooks and Janitor Pauline Haver, Virginia Surque, Mable Beams, Alvin Beardsley Bus Drivers FRONT ROW: Charles Meyer, Ralph Morhart STANDING: William Camp, Ken¬ neth Countryman, Dwight Burlin¬ game, Ralph Smith Arlos Boger, Sandra Byroade, Judy Amaden, Jane Peebles, Linda Godfrey, Joan Biasing, Joyce Wonderly, and Ann Smith. Indispensable Aides What an efficient group of office girls we had this year! They worked hard every day to lighten the load of Mrs. Thiel. Included in a typical day’s work are checking absences and the typing of many re¬ cords. With “The Strength to Move a Mountain” our staff of librarians set to work under the instruction of Mrs. Wood, head librarian. Among their many duties they lend books, collect fines, repair and catalog hooks, and help students find reference material on subjects ranging from atoms to zebras. Run With Frightening Regularity Chemistry Mary Wort, Jane Peebles, and Gloria Osmun watch Judy Amaden as she pours an explosive into the beaker wondering if Judy knows what she is doing. Plane Geometry Are you sure the circumference of a circle is 360 de¬ grees? If you’re in doubt, ask Dennis Hammond, Dick Gordon, or Phyllis Sweeney since they’re taking plane geometry and they know all about it. Biology “Hey! Where’s this go?” asks Lowell Griffith as he looks at a replica of a human being during biology. Barb Arnold looks in the book and tells Lowell the correct position. Physics In physics Jim Cromwell, Elton Snyder, Allan Miller, and Mancil Brush learn more about mathematical solutions. 15 There Are Only Drivers’ Training “Oh, oh! We’ve got another flat tire.” But Bob Rowan, Helen Smith, and Cheryl Jones have learned the tricks to tire changing, thanks to drivers’ training. Civics Geography Mrs. McKeen explains a public health chart to Alice May, Ellen Walter, Joe Adams, Jackie Cunningham, and Doug Cook, members of her civics class. The globe has Frank Handy, Paul Shortgen, Pat Kenner, and Mary Lou Kelley fascinated with the many places they study about in geography class during their senior year. 16 Better check those figures again! The business machines are getting a thorough work-out as Ann Smith, Arlos Boger, and their class learn how to use the Comptometer, Calculator, and the 10-Key Adding Machine. “Mrs. Scheuring, will you please explain that again?” Gary Meeks, Sharon Bassett, Sharon Tustison, Richard Camp, Sandy Clark, and Lowell Griffith are discussing Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” )o you want to learn the fundamentals of bookkeeping? Veil, Joan Biasing, Marcia Wirick, Phil Carr, Ray Hinsch, lianne Doeden, and Tom Knight are mastering the course his year and learning how to “get rich quick.” Wouldn’t it be fun to have a secretary like Deanna Tom- nson or Janet Bilger? They decided they better learn to ike shorthand before they practice sitting on the boss’s nee. twenty-four Hours a Day? Mr. Leonard Myers, Jr., B.A.; Mr. Philip Samuelson, B.S., Mus. This is an important factor for good speech. American History In American History Ra Schooley points out to Mary Nolte the orig¬ inal thirteen colonies which are known for their historical signi¬ ficance. Our club has many interesting activities during the year. Forty- two members attended our annual State Convention in November at Dayton. Honors came to Hicksville as Janice Peter was elected First Vice- President of the State, and Sue Stemen was named State Delegate to the National Convention in June. Ten members attended the National Convention which was held in Washington D.C. in June, 1959. Enthusiasm ran high as Ann Smith was elected Vice-President of the Central Region, which in¬ cludes seven states. Arlos Boger was her capable campaign manager. The annual fall candy selling project brought in money to help send delegates to the convention. Bake sales netted additional funds permitting more members to attend this yearly state meeting. Probably the most worthwhile project of this club is the Christ¬ mas collection of clothes and toys, which is taken to the Defiance County Children’s Home by the members. They Are the Spirit of the Aces Will or won’t that ball go in? The first requisite is high scholarship, an average of 3.5 being required for candidacy. Then each candidate is judged indi¬ vidually by secret ballot of the faculty on his merits in the areas of leadership, character, and service. Two major events highlight the year for Honor Society members. One is the annual tapping and induction service, an impressive candlelight cere¬ mony held usually in April. The other event is a dinner meeting honoring the graduating members. Mrs. Ruth Wood is the sponsor of this organization. “In the flaming torch of knowledge I light the white taper of character.” “I have found Sandra Byroade who has been elected to probationary membership in the National Honor Society.” You are now a permanent member of the N.H.S. Teachers and Homemakers, We Plan to Be This year the Future Homemakers of America has twenty-six members. All homemaking students are eligible to join FHA. Some of our activities were attending district meetings, carol singing at Christmas, and serving at the Fall Football Banquet. Under the leadership of our advisor, Mrs. Miller, and with the cooperation of the officers and mem¬ bers, we have accomplished much this year. Our newly-organized chapter of Future Teachers of America has twenty-two charter members. The chapter was instituted to help those Juniors and Sen¬ iors interested in exploring the advantages of teach¬ ing as a career and to prepare others for college. The club’s program included panels by students and teachers. FRONT ROW: Florence Jewell, Larry Smith, Treasurer; and Susie DeMuth, President. SECOND ROW: Colby Geco- wetts, Ann Smith, and Roma Banks. Melissa Dugan, the girl Homer has been writing to, shows up all set for a weddin’ and finds Homer and his hillbilly friends as poor as paupers. What takes place after this is one sidesplitting laugh after another. Step High and Guide Right This year the marching band of H.H.S. partici¬ pated in many activities showing off their skill with each step. They performed in the Defiance and Paulding County Parade of Bands. Novelty half-time shows were presented at all of the home football games and also at Edon and Angola by the band. They led the annual Halloween, Christmas, and Memorial Day Parades. ! , 68 I i i f Precision Plus During the football season our six majorettes— Diana Cottrell, Susan DeLong, Judy Ringer, Melissa Kelley, Janet Massie, and Nancy Betts-—were un¬ der the capable instruction of Sue Stemen, our head majorette. Later in the season Hicksville placed a close victory of 28-26 over Edon. Coach Hilbert put his boys through a hard week of practice, training them to oppose Paulding, one of the area’s toughest teams. Our very capable Advisor, Mrs. Culler, and Editor, Judy Camp, “worked?” many long hours in order to complete those final pages. 150 Many hours of research and hard work were spent by Jane Peebles and Gloria Osmun in order that the Hixonian might be complete with an alumni section. Rex Conine, Helen Adams, Judy Amaden, and Linda Godfrey show their delight in knowing that all the work is done on this year’s yearbook. TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The World’s Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made” Memories Are Made of This And we add another chapter to our book of senior memories. We were impressed and delighted at the wonders, of Washington, D. C. The trip was worth every bit of the time and hard work that we spent in raising enough money to meet our expenses. A midnight serenade! Everybody’s doing it! And visions of sugar plums danced in their heads. Oh, what memories! Black eyes and collapsible beds. An unexpected highlight—seeing Sen¬ ator Kennedy.
