Heel the Staff ls the faculty write-up ready? Where's the sports copy? Now, what happened to those snapshots for page three? Such was the life of the 1954 Hixon- ian Staff, who raced in high gear from September to June preparing this copy of your annual. So, step right up and meet the staff: H ixon in n The Best Yet We, the members of the Hixonian Staff of '54, are well aware that the primary purpose of the annual yearbook is to pre- serve the experiences of our school life at HHS. In order to do this, we have tried to make our book different by introducing summer delivery so that we could incorporate those activities which were impossible to include be- cause of the necessary early deadline. Through the co-operative assistance of our advisor, Mrs. Mary Culler, and students of HHS, we hope our endeavors to make this year's book the best yet have been successful. H. S. marching band or the concert band. both consisting of fifty-four members. Under the direction of Mr. Agne. the band has worked tirelessly this year for tone and unity. They have bettered themselves by one-hundred per cent. A v In the fall. the marching band presented many entertaining half-time shows at football games. each time improving their performance. They also marched in the Halloween Parade. the Armistice Day Parade. Christmas Parade. and the parade contest at Auburn, Indiana. Co-ncert band then took over the spotlight, and all efforts were put forth to perfect the wide variety of music for the.Def1ance County Musical Festival and the annual Spring Concert. The top-ranking band members were chosen to participate in the Festival The Spring Concert, in addition to the Senior Band. also included special numbers by the Junior Band and a twirling spectacle by the Majorettes. The band's final appearances were for Kindergarten Commencement and Senior Uominencement. The band is once again coming into its own at H. ll. S. and is attracting more and more students into its ranks. Although the band did not take part in the band contest at Bryan. Ohio. this spring, we are sure that in a few years the Hicksville High School Band will be rated as one of the best hands in Northwestern Ohio. t'on,Qratulations and keep up the good work. Marching Band -- Promotes School Spirit Chorus - - Life is a Song Under the direction of Mr. Donald Agne, the chorus, with sixty-two voices, has made great strides toward music in its finest sense. With determination and practice, they have developed co- operativeness and a feeling of achievement. The chorus had very little time to rehearse during the fall because of marching band, but were diligently at work as soon as possible. A selection of sacred music was presented at the Commun- ity Christmas Program and for the student body. Since the chorus did not participate in the vocal contests at Bryan this spring, Mr. Agne placed full emphasis on music for the Defiance County Music Festival and later, a spring concert. Both were rewarding events. Their final appearance was the honor of singing for the Baccalaureate services in May. Unlike other years, fortunately, the chorus will be minus only a few voices as a result of the graduating of seniors and many underclassmen are eager to step into their shoes. We are confident that we shall be seeing and hearing great things from the chorus in the future. ROW ONE: Florence Sisco, Yvonne Headley, Janice Boqer. Pat Drirer. Victor Adams. Basketball Bucketeers The success or failure of a team is generally measured from the record of wins and losses. By this standard, the Hicksville Aces had an average season with eleven wins and eleven losses. Though winning is foremost in every- one's mind, there are certainly other points that contribute to the success of n wish for victory, a team, No team ca think they already have it made, or rely on what they did last week. In order to win, they must put out every minute -then, and only then, can they call themselves true athletes. ix 'zu .,: lr! With very little practice, due to unfavorable weather, a game was played with Cold- water. Hicksville returned home with their first loss. Not discouraged, the Aces journeyed back to Coldwater to meet a heavy hitting opposition resul.ing in another loss. Then on April 21 off they went to meet the Edgerton Bulldogs, In a flurry of hits the Bulldogs won 6 to 2. Before the next game Hicksville got in three practices and were ready to meet Edgerton again. This time the tide was turned and Hicksville came home with their first win 2 to 1. On May 7 they defeated Farmer 10 to 5, in a real hard-hitting ball game. The Aces gained another victory on May 11, over Sherwood 7 to 5. Then their winning streak was broken when they lost to Farmer by a score of 4 to 3. Each player did his part and through teamxwrk and co-operation they developed into a team that is a real credit to Hicksville baseball history. ROW ONE: Ed Perry. Kcnnf lniel. Roger Corwin.
