Suddenly it is 1960, a year we seniors have all looked forward to and shall always fondly look back upon. We are already anticipat- ing graduation day, now fast approaching, but with mingled feelings. We are reaching an important milestone, leaving behind familiar scenes of work and play and stepping fourth upon the arena of the untried future. As we emerge from our early carefree years, we suddenly realize we are about to be challenged with a world less guarded and directed, and must assume more and more the respon- sibility of our own decisions in a troubled society. In presenting the 1960 Comet Yearbook, the staff hopes it has fulfilled its mission, to present a pictorial chronicle that will be treasured in days to come as a reminder and a record of happy memory-filled days. The Comet Yearbook is a gesture of goodwill to those who are to continue the story and trust of the traditions of Hicksville High School. The editors, as representatives of the senior class, have spent these past weeks and months gathering the necessary material for this volume. Along with the work and patience needed, the Staff has carried on in one accord in a joyous and profitable adventure. Several changes occur in this year's annual in an attempt to produce as complete a picture of our school life as possible. It is our hope that you will be pleased with the 1960 Yearbook. We Offer it to you as a tribute to the fine record made by the class of I960. We wish to express our appreciation to those seniors and others who by their assistance have lightened our task. In particular we are grateful for the untiring efforts of the boys in the print shop who have cooperated all the way to assure the production of this the 1960 Comet.

Today all of us are interested in preserving a way of life. We call our way of life'-Democracy. Is 'our way of life a method of preserving merely the status quo and satisfying ourselves with a negative attitude toward change? You have spent these very formative years of your life in this High School. It has come to mean many things to you. I sincerely hope that it has meant a 'way of life’. May this 'way of life not be identified with merely the ability to create ease or amass a fortune, but the ability and desire to help others. Your education here with us has added greatly to your self improvement and I hope it will open many gates to future improvement. You have, while here, talked much about individual freedom. Re- member, the exercise of such freedom is limited by laws, customs, pre- judices and, in general, by all restrictions that enable a country such as yours to exist in the world today. Go forth, firm in the belief of 'our way of life and bring happiness to yourself and others. May God be with you always, and when in the future at times you stop to ponder, think kindly of us.
