We are already anticipat- ing graduation day, now fast approaching, but with mingled feelings. We are reaching an important milestone, leaving behind familiar scenes of work and play and stepping fourth upon the arena of the untried future. As we emerge from our early carefree years, we suddenly realize we are about to be challenged with a world less guarded and directed, and must assume more and more the respon- sibility of our own decisions in a troubled society. In presenting the 1960 Comet Yearbook, the staff hopes it has fulfilled its mission, to present a pictorial chronicle that will be treasured in days to come as a reminder and a record of happy memory-filled days. The Comet Yearbook is a gesture of goodwill to those who are to continue the story and trust of the traditions of Hicksville High School. The editors, as representatives of the senior class, have spent these past weeks and months gathering the necessary material for this volume. Along with the work and patience needed, the Staff has carried on in one accord in a joyous and profitable adventure. Several changes occur in this year's annual in an attempt to produce as complete a picture of our school life as possible. It is our hope that you will be pleased with the 1960 Yearbook. We Offer it to you as a tribute to the fine record made by the class of I960. We wish to express our appreciation to those seniors and others who by their assistance have lightened our task. In particular we are grateful for the untiring efforts of the boys in the print shop who have cooperated all the way to assure the production of this the 1960 Comet. Today all of us are interested in preserving a way of life. We call our way of life'-Democracy. Is 'our way of life a method of preserving merely the status quo and satisfying ourselves with a negative attitude toward change? You have spent these very formative years of your life in this High School. It has come to mean many things to you. I sincerely hope that it has meant a 'way of life’. May this 'way of life not be identified with merely the ability to create ease or amass a fortune, but the ability and desire to help others. Your education here with us has added greatly to your self improvement and I hope it will open many gates to future improvement. You have, while here, talked much about individual freedom. Re- member, the exercise of such freedom is limited by laws, customs, pre- judices and, in general, by all restrictions that enable a country such as yours to exist in the world today. Go forth, firm in the belief of 'our way of life and bring happiness to yourself and others. May God be with you always, and when in the future at times you stop to ponder, think kindly of us. Leon J. Galloway Principal - 6 - TO THE CLASS OF I960: As you approach the threshhold of tomorrow, be it business, armed services or college, al- ways give it your best. Be truthful, trustworthy, and industrious. Take pride in doing an honest job. Meet opportunity when it comes toward you. If you wait until it passes, you will never catch it. What is opportunity? It is the chance to do something, to achieve something, to climb out of the rut, to be somebody of value in the world. Every day means opportunity, every hour means possibility of good work. Say to yourself. 'The world is full of opportunity; seize it and hang onto it.” If you find happiness in the path of life you follow; if you are concerned with the welfare of your fellow man, then success will crown your efforts. THOMAS HORNE Assistant Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1960 Along with the wishes for the future happi- ness usually offered to the graduating class, I feel the need to introduce a more solemn note to this group. Every class has its own personality. Wherein does yours differ from others? You certainly have your share of scholars, musicians, athletes, and artisans as have had other groups, and yet there is a difference. Could it be that you intuitively feel the weight of your responsibility in the future of mankind? Could it be that yourealizethat never before has so much destructive power been available to the civilized world? Could it be that in your sound judgment rests the outcome of the crises we find ourselves facing? Perhaps your class person- ality stems from external factors over which you have had little or no control. Now you begin to feel your strength. Now you begin to take the reins in tour own hands! Act wisely, the future is yours. WILLIAM FEIGIN Assistant Principal - 7 BOARD OF EDUCATION From left: Herbert H. Johnsen; Robert D.P. Eaton; Allen S. Carpenter, Pres- ident; Walter W. For many years she served our school in a loyal and able manner. Always at her post and ever ready to lend a helping hand, she never failed to give her time and energy wherever possible to lighten the tasks of others, and always with a ready smile. We have suffered a loss of one who cannot be replaced. In token of our high esteehi we, the class of 1960, lovingly dedicate this volume to Mrs. Edna Brant. 11 - AHLSEN, BEVERLEY MAE Bev Music Teacher College Marching Band 2, 3; Concert Band 2, 3, 4; Orchestra 2, 3; Secretary 4; Future Teacher’s of America 2, 3; Vice-President 4; Latin Club 3; Spring Concert 2, 3, 4; NYSSMA 2, 3, 4; Musical Comedy 2, 3, 4; Variety Show 3; National Honor Society 3, 4; Round Table 3, 4; Student Council 4; Homeroom Vice-President 4. Under a lavender and white ceiling and a beautiful Hawaiian setting, couples danced to the music of the Clem De Rosa Orches, tra. The entertainment presented was noteworthy and added greatly to everyone's enjoyment. The climax of a perfect evening came at 12:30,when lovely Pat Martin was announced to be the reigning queen with her atten- dants being Marie Catrone and Holly Hunt. Moffo; Ad Astra Par Aspera To The Stars Through Difficulties Class Poem THOUGHTS ON GRADUATION DAY by Lyn Hamilton and Steve Fialkow This, our finest year, Is coming to an end, With a sigh and a tear, We part with many a friend. The memories of these years in school, March by in bright array, The work, the fun, the friends we knew, We will recall each future day. The football games when everyone Came to cheer our boys, The celebrations and the fun, Over our victories and joys. The Junior Prom, the Senior Ball, Highlights from wonderful years, The clubs and teams, plays and shows. The boosters with their cheers. The noisy, crowded, halls, The displays and pictures on the walls, The mixed-up cloches, the crazy fads, The Comet shop, and booster adds. The precis book, the senior theme, To some a nightmare, to others a dream. The tests and regents always required The dreaded termination, never desired. These impressions pierce My thoughts like a knife, Not just for today, graduation day, But for all the days of my life. oS- W60 Class Song IT'S D’LOVELY ” by Lois Cbaber and Richard Bankosky The time has come to graduate The future’s bright; everything looks great. Thought we’ve worked hard, We had good times; We’ll go farther. The memories of our high school cheers Will surely stay with us through the years. We’ll remember Hicksville High School’s Alma Mater. You can tell we’re so glad— Four glorious years we have had! But we’re all through with our high school years, we all know. To greater heights we must go! So listen to our prophecy. The things in store for our class, you see We’ve got spirit, We’ve got promise, We will surge ahead, We will make our mark. We can do it; yes we can. Keep it up class of sixty! Colors: LAVENDER AND WHITE Flower: ORCHID 236 As we gaze into our crystal ball, the glass grows clear, and we see the class of I960, at work and at play, in the year 1980 .... Our glance first sweeps over Mid-Island Hospital, where we find Dr. John Petree and nurse Pat Mar- tin in close consultation. Not far from the hospital, William Ramos is addressing an audience of taxpayers. Let's listen in...........“ People, let's really hear it for taxes, people ! Yup, that’s our Bill. It’s not hard to find traces of Richie Bizzaro. On almost every bill board, you’ll see 'ol “Perpetual Seventeen ’’ modeling the latest in fashions for men. We stop by a news-stand, and, while glancing through the local papers we discover Dali-like surrealistic drawings. And from whose pen do these proceed? It s the pen of Steve Fialkow, the mad artist of 1960 fame. As we stop by the local grammar school, we observe the Women's Club preparing for their annual char- ity play. As Jill Altman and Angela Pane cavort across the stage, Joyce S colaro is frantically arranging the pro- duction details. Down the street a bit, is Fran DeCabia in the National Headquarters of Bo-Bo-Ski Societies of Amer- ica. He is arranging for their twentieth anniversary. Next door, at a meeting of the Women’s Garden Club, we look in on chairman Linda Zuckerman presiding over the weekly meeting. ( Every Friday afternoon they gather to dig the dirt). Our traveling representative, Richie Banfcosky, has been employed by the Old Bay Line in place of their porter who used to awaken the passengers. Richie will accomplish the same purpose by playing reveille at 5 A.M.. Down on Madison Avenue we hear Hal Berkowitz, Super Saleman of the advertising field. Joe Green and Fred Herdeen are employed by CBS. Their cheerful morning broadcast starts our day off with a “bang” (and a crash and a giggle). In a nearby laboratory, Neil Lensky and Carol Boyce are crack- ing jokes as well as test tubes as they dissect the gluteus maximus of one Mus Albino. From across the ocean, we hear that Maddy Frischman is in Paris stealing fashions from the House of Dior. Over the desert sands, we gallops Barbara Staker trying desperately to leam the Algerian longue, so she can publish a local newspaper in the native language. In New York City, we saw Lois Chaber in a glass booth in the middle of Times Square, carrying on a televised marathon with a UN1VAC machine ( P S. - She won ). On a recent world-wide tour, Jerry Giovaniello “deposed a Mr. ‘K’ ” and is now a dictator too. On a quick trip to Greenwich Village, we meet Peter Horvath playing a very modem violin concert to Sandy Sandleruho is sitting on the floor accompanying him on the bongodrums. Meanwhile, in his downtown laboratory Richie Ollins is prepar- ing a very potent bomb, which will destroy the entire world. Charles Lan- tay is now in a very prosperous used car business. Suddenly the crystal ball grows cloudy. Once more we arc the graduating seniors ofHicfcsville High School.
