Hewlett High School Hewlett, New York, Volume 32 Decisions I cannot decide The fate of my life, I cannot accept The cautions of man, I have left my dreams On the edge of the moon And I grope at dawn To understand. Yet they taunt me And haunt me To choose and discard, To play at the game, dignified, I am young, I am eager I want to try all, And I cannot stop to decide. The dilemma of decision has been encountered by both students and teachers. Patches 1966 is dedicated to a woman who has vigorously and conscientiously accepted the respon- sibility of decisions. TO MRS. IRMA MARMOR The staff of Patches 1966 has Worked secretly to dedicate this publication to Mrs. Marmor. She epitomizes the theme of decisions throughout her career as a teacher of English. Her students and her yearbook staff have often requested her assistance in making decisions, and she has never failed them. She is con- stantly faced with decisions as a teacher, as advisor to Patches, and as coordinator of the Team Teaching Project. She continually strives to im- prove herself by taking in-service and graduate courses. She has shown her dedication to the teaching profession by accepting and training many stu- dent teachers. The students of Hewlett High School recognize Mrs. Marmor as a vibrant, enthusiastic person. The unexamined lite is not worth living Socrates To Write is to give, to read is to receive.' As coordinator of the Team Teaching Prolect Mrs Marmor makes a final judgment on the syllabus it 'I-,V M fl- , h s , ' 1? 2 I, Z ' . WT Class of '67 Immediately after being elected, the competent class offi- cers formed the Iunior Council to promote class spirit. Enthusi- asm reached its peak in the fall during the highlighted week- end of the annual Iunior Play and Iunior Class Breakfast. Due to the fine acting, this year's production, Iunior Miss, was a success and, as a result, our class treasury reached triple fig- ures for the first time. After the Iunior Class Breakfast, the unsuspecting policemen were presented with an interesting problem when 150 spirited Iuniors linked arms and Weaved in and out of traffic on Broadway. The enthusiasm of this year's Iunior Class is an indication of future success. lt I ? l 3 Homeroom 130 x I Kisvw 1 'Z ll 3 Homeroom 131 X Homeroom 201 4 ' ff Homeroom 202 Q Homeroom 203 QQ :YW Homeroom 205 Homeroom 206 f Homeroom 208 3, i Homeroom 213 Homeroom 217 Homeroom 221 Homeroom 224 WTS 'x ix. n. Its Soph Nite drew the largest attendance of any class dance and made the largest profit ever, a record-breaking event. Historically, Soph enthusiasm is supposed to be a nonentity, but this year's class pro- vided ior the greater portion of attendance at the Student Council Skating Party, and its own Skiing Trip was a memorable affair. At the time of this writing the Sophs have scheduled Soph Nite II, a Soph-Ir. basketball game and dance Cwild with class spirit, they dared to challenge their upper classmenl and other events. All promise to add currency to the bulging Soph Treasury, largest in school's recollection. Their goal is to put on their Ir. One of its finest aspects is its desire to keep looking for new and better methods of teaching so that the student can be exposed to as many facets of the English language as possible. To augment the curriculum and broaden the scope of the student, Hewlett has instituted creative writing, humanities, pub- lic speaking, and team teaching programs. In Creative Writing promising students learn how to channel their talent in order to become mature writers by studying and analyzing the styles of leading authors. The Humanities, introduced 'for the first time this year, explores the arts and their relation to man and society from ancient Greece to the present. Taught by five teachers, each specializing in one field - art, music, drama, literature, and history - the program draws on the talent and imagination of the student. Public Speaking instructs the student in proper and effective oral presentation. Team Teaching is another source of pride to Hewlett. The students have a flexible program, some- times meeting in small groups of ten, sometimes as a class of sixty. Because all the students have a free second period, the class may run from thirty minutes to sixty. As in the Humanities class, each of the three teachers is able to specialize in the par- ticular field which is most interesting to him or her. The program is therefore designed to allow the students to form small interest groups to further delve into the particular field they find exciting. Perhaps this is the aim of the entire English -department - to offer a diversified enough curriculum to accommodate the many varied student interests. Once the student has this basic foundation, he can un- derstand the specific events which are built on to this framework. In World History the student finds that such events as the French Revolu- tion, the Crusades, the Reformation, and the World Wars are just the final manifestations of the gradual changes in thought and the almost minute dis- integration of an established system. Though America's history is but a speck on the time line of World History, it, too, can not be completely taught in one or two years. Though in later years the student may forget exactly what legislation brought an end to child labor or what Iackson answered Calhoun at the Iefferson Day Dinner,.he will always retain an ineradicable understanding of his country's history. It is this grasp of history that the department aims at. The serious student can always look up a date or a provision if he knows where to go for it and why it is there. In the honor classes this theory prevails. Rather than memorizing facts, the students are given the opportunity to read, analyze, and discuss primary documents. In so doing the student ca:n see for himself the tenor of thought during each historical era. This first-hand exploration gives a realism and fascination to history that secondary sources can not provide. f-5 orld History 'QW -ffr .-?f1TfX sTT'f'ifg1-:f1,f7 rf1 Q. . , ,- V si 4- ' ' 1f ?'. Our record is impressive. Most Hewlettites find it difficult to remember a year when we haven't cleanly swept top honors in state foreign language competitions. How many schools can boast of taking first place in the French two, three, four, and special classification for outside study state competitions in one year? Hewlett has placed strong emphasis on lingual abilities. Through up-to-date language labs, tape recordings, records, films, and after school clubs, students have been able to improve their accents them- selves. Through supplementary reading and reporting, in conjunction' with class study, the students are able to sample foreign literature. The value of reading Hugo, Cervantes, and Virgil in their respective languages is immeasurable. As Hewlett has grown, so has the language department. Besides the courses in Latin, Spanish, and French, it is now possible to study German and Russian. Who can say - perhaps in a few years Hewlett will offer Chinese or Swahili. I-in awareness of their many facets is essential to understanding the world. The mathematics and science programs at Hewlett offer basic and advanced courses to stimulate and challenge each student, Algebra and Geometry consist of fundamental principles and reasoning processes. These objective and gratifying subjects often encourage students to pursue further the marvels of mathematics. Probability and Statistics. is a practical course necessary for most research fields. Analytical Geometry and Advanced Al- gebra further develop a student's ability to think logic- ally. Math 12X and Calculus are recent additions to Hewlett's curriculum. Mathematics enthusiasts in these advanced courses are introduced to the tools of today's scientist. Science courses at Hewlett give the student an opportunity to experiment and observe. Biology, the study of animal life, offers greater understanding of the processes by which animals grow, regenerate them- selves, and function. Radiation Biology teaches ambit- ious students the source, transmission, and effect of energy emanations upon living organisms. Chemistry delves into the composition and inter-reaction of all matter. Physics students use their mathematics skills to analyze mechanics, energy, wave phenomenon, and electricity. PSSC covers each topic in greater depth and allows the student to perfect his individual labor- atory technique. Science and mathematics' are often a student's most rewarding subjects. The student at Hewlett is fortunate to have excellent equipment, a broad selec- tion of courses, and inspiring teachers. 122 vw X r X Math 10 3 is Ioel Rindler Ann Lrss Mr. Rindler feels there's Q definite rhythm to math Iohn Ioctnnon intl' Clcure Hochberg Robert Brown Mrs. Liss gets her point across. For those interested in the arts, Hewlett boasts a thriving art and music department. In the past five years the high school has witnessed the advent of a grade A orchestra, and the expansion of a fine chorus and band. The winter and spring concerts have become as important in our school life as the school plays, dances, and final examinations. Our liberal and progres- sive art department produces movies, designs clothing cmd buildings, creates advertisements, and annually presents an exciting exhibition of student work. If one is of a mechanical nature, he has at his disposal the auto mechanics shop and the mechanical drawing boards. The audio-visual department affords the student the opportunity of showing films, taping, running our P.A. system, and assisting teachers with audio-visual materials. Of course, we cannot forget Hewlett's most popular class - Driver Education. How envious are other teachers of the enthusiasm which students bring to this class! Whether for personal use or as a basis for future study, the Home Econom- ics and Home Nursing programs offer the student interesting and above all practical information in cooking, sewing, and first aid. The Business Education department in Hewlett is a thriving, expanding unit. This year we were proud to institute a new program which permits the student to attend classes in the morning and work in his field during the after- noon. The typing, shorthand, accounting, and bookkeeping classes provide the future businessman and secretary with a firm foundation upon which they can build their future. gr? Although the team suffered because of lack of depth, they finished with a 3-3 record - good enough to earn third place. The defense was sparked by the great play of All-South Shore tackle Don Adams and All-League linebacker Adrian Levy. This young duo, coupled with the senior fearsome foursome of Pat Sheehan, Cliff Thilem, Russ Montovani, and Spencer Maslow, was the main reason for the Bluejacket string of four consecutive victories. The Bluejackets, rated number one in Nassau County before the season began, started strongly by rip- ping off seven straight victories. However, mid-season lapses against Lawrence, Uniondale, and Elmont relegated the Munch- men to a second place finish in Division II behind Uniondale. The highlight of the season came in the final game when Hew- lett avenged their earlier defeat by impressively beating Union- dale 48-37. The team carried this momentum into the County Playoffs and handily eliminated Oceanside and East Meadow before bowing to a taller Lynbrook team in the quarterfinals. The Bluejackets were led by Captains Andy Harrison and Sandy Magid. Harrison, a member of the All-South Shore team, was Hewlett's leading scorer and rebounder and shot an amaz- ing 4879 from the floor. All-League guard Lou Glazer was the team's second high scorer and his 34 points against Lawrence was high for the season. Iunior Danny Chizever performed ad- mirably at both guard and forward and his late-season blossom- ing gives an optimistic outlook for next year's team. The Hewlett Bowling Team, embroiled in a real tight division race all through the season, just missed clinching first place from the hands of a strong Freeport squad. The boys, after finishing second during the regular season, competed in the county tournament and well displayed Hewlett's prowess in this sport. The pinmen were led by captain Mike Durham and anchor man Ray Chell. With the aid of their fine coach, Mr. Ferrara, the Hewlett Keglers expect to be a strong contender again next year. 185 Rifle Team Top row tlett to rightl : Eddie Geisler, Harry Richter, Coach Bill Palmer, Tommy Kinzler, Captain Harvey Borden. Bottom row: Phil Rizzo, Keith Monas. The varsity rifle team, coached by Bill Palmer, had a re- spectable but disappointing 6-B season, despite consistently excellent scores by Captain Harvey Borden and junior Harry Richter, Harvey and Harry Went on to the Inter-County Ritlery Championship and finished fourth and sixth respectively. Next year the marksmen will have several returning letter- men. These boys include Iohn Santapolo, Harry Richter, Billy Mersey, A1 Blianch, and Phil Rizzo. 186 , , , P RIFLExsGHED,ULE3'iii7fi tz , Long Beach, . . Q Q. . . Freeport . Berner ... .. V. S. Paced by the outstanding distance duo of Frank Zydor in the 2 mile and Gary Schilling in the mile run, Hewlett is complemented by good speed in the mid- dle distance events. Dave Frankfort is in the 440 and speedster Iim Lovell usually sweeps both the lUU and 200. Harvey Borden is rounding into top form in the half mile. Paul Caridi dominates the low and high hurdles. The field events also are sprinkled with top performers, Louis Glazer thigh jump and triple jumpl, Howie Brower Cpole vaultl, and Louis Muren tbroad jumpl should all turn in many first place points. This year's Hewlett baseball team, under the guidance of Coach Barney Dugan, features a balanced hitting attack, experience, and an excellent pitching staff. With the return of eight lettermen and a fine core of underclassmen, the Bluejackets look like a strong contender in Division Il. The team opened up the season against Lawrence and walked away with a 4 - 2 win. Held hitless until the third inning when Ron Berk broke the ice and singled to center, Hewlett then opened up with three consecutive hits by Soph Bob Whitney, Ioe Bandazzo, and Iohn Zullo which produced the four runs. These were enough as Ken O'Brien held Lawrence to two hits while striking out eighteen. The second game was all Richie Garvin. Not only did he pitch a one-hitter but also collected two hits and drove in three of the four runs. Lou DeMott, a Soph, also delivered two hits. Hewlett 4, Lawrence l. In the finale against Lawrence, Hewlett also came out on top, l - U. Ken O'Brien won his second game of the season pitching a two-hit shutout. The Patches staff has at- tempted to reflect the past three years by reminding you of the events in which you partici- pated, the students and teach- ers with whom you have worked, and the decisions that you have made. We are also cognizant of the decision of sev- eral members of our faculty to retir-e, to leave the profession to which they have dedicated their lives. These teachers who are retiring are leaving a vacuum that can only be filled by renew teachers, just as the graduating seniors are leaving a vacuum, only to be filled by a new senior class. The cycle continues. The decisions are pondered, made, and carried out. We, of Patches, hope that through this yearbook, these decisions have been brought to light. 5, , A ' , 1-951' ,.
