September 7 For the first time since leaving port we have come across land. From the map, it appears to be Island No. 1. It is inhabited by strange peopleg all they do is complain how much harder their life is now than it was in some legendary place they call lcindergarten. October 11 We have landed on Island No. 2. The people here seem a bit more advanced. Several, in fact, can count to 100. Quite an achievement for a race of pygmies. November 13 Island No. 4. We endeavored for several days to obtain a specimen of a local insect known as a spelling bee. The natives bloclced our attempts, however. December 17 Island Nb. 6. Here the main occupation of the male inhabitants appears to be throwing clay at each other. Their only possessions seem to be white sheets of paper on which is written the legend Penmanship Certificate. These they value very highly. 1.,Qi1,f'.,,,v.' i 47, fs- , . ,-.. . January 18 The people here on Island No. 7 have a fairly ad- vanced civilizationg however, they still persist in an old custom of herding a group of children into an enclosed structure they call 7-X. The children are then made to sit in circles. This is known as committee world, March 6 Curiouser and curiouser! All the people here on Island No. 9 do nothing but cut pieces of wood into smaliler pieces. They then put them back together in a slightly different shape. This practice goes under the title of Industrial Arts. April 19 The people of Island No. ll have almost developed a civilization. The chief source of amusement here seems to be listening to a chieftain named Shirlc. He was re- ported to be cheering some of his subjects on with the remark, It galls me to have to give you an 'A'. Almost, but not quite, civilized. May 28 Island No. IZ! It's good to be home! We were mobbed on the dock by well-wishers selling fruitcalces and class play tickets. Yes sir! As we sail along we are ably steered by our Captain, Jim Price. Second in command of our ship is Betsy Cash. The keeper of the Log and spoils is Joyce Hess. The rest of the crew staunchly supports the school activities. Our fourteen lifeboats are also well manned. In addition we send crew representatives to the Student Council, governing the fleet. The voyage was begun September third with a rousing send-off. Wonderfully represented on the football team, the Sophomore Ship also had crew members on the Cheering Squad. Of course, this voyage was not all for fun and the Honor Roll shows we realize this. To end the cruise we had a lovely Sophomore Prom full of fun and excitement. In their flashy new uniforms, the band emerges directly from a most successful marching and concert season. Setting off the regular duties at football games was the enjoyable Clay spent at Penn State socializing and performing with numerous bands from schools throughout Pennsylvania. The concert season came to a thrilling climax with Raphael Mendez, one of the world's greatest trumpet players, appearing as guest soloist. Mr. Mendez not only won the respect of the band members by his artful techniques but also the respect of the entire community. The job of molding the abilities of many instru- mentalists into a well-integrated organization is performed by Mr. Paul G. Fisher, the band's outstanding director for the past seven years. Whether itls working out tricky maneuvers for the football field or skillfully interpreting musical scores, his efforts are always a major factor con- tributing to the success of the band. 'wi For a setting of smooth strings rather than sound- ing brass, a few select members of the band join a finely developed string section for orchestral enter- tainment. This organization, which is steadily grow- ing in ability, has gained recognition from its concert tour made in northern Pennsylvania. It was the first adventure of this nature ever tried by the Hershey High School orchestra, and its success can certainly be assured by the experience and gratification in performing and interscholastic relationships gained by the members. This year Miss Jane Emel was directress of the orchestra. Many excellent performances were given, including concerts at the Junior and Senior class plays and the annual music festivals. Under the guidance of their new coach, Mr. Kurtz, they lived up to our school's rating as one of the top wrestling powers in this region. Although they lacked experience, they made up for it in spirit. The will and determi- nation of this squad was evidenced by its commendable record. The team included the following seniors: John Hertzler, lVlarlin Koser, Richard Eckert, and Ronald Gelbaugh - all of these boys doing an excellent job. In seniors John Rhine, a four-year lettermang John Price, a three-year letterman, and Barry Daniels, who has lettered two years in baseball, Mr. Banta had three boys with plenty of experience and lcnowhow around whom to build his team. Besides Daniels, Price, and Rhine, other seniors who saw action were Dave Brown, Lawrence Brown, Terry Koons, and Bill Seaman. Three very talented under- classmen on the team were jim Bott, Wayne Faust, and Jim Price. ,Last year the Trojans had a nearly perfect season in winning the Central Penn Conference Championship, likewise, this year the Hershey nine played like champions and came up with another victorious season.
