ADMI I TRATIU Few administrative bodies are fortunate enough to have an emperor in power and a triumvirate im' mediately under him. However, such is our own schools postion. The emperor is Mr. Koch, our super' intendent of schools, while the triumvirate consists of Mr. Lange, high school principalg Mr. Eby, asf sistant principal, and Mr. Evans, vocational director. With such capable men in ofhcc, it is no wonder that school business runs so smoothly. During an average day our administrators deal with matters as ordinary as the excuse of an absentee or as important as planning the curricula. Working in conjunction with these men are the sccretaries, Miss Uhrich, Miss Morrett, Miss Koxr, Miss Shank, Miss Heister. Many problems arise in a school year, but, like the enemies of Rome when she was in her glory, they fall and are overcome. Our congratulations and thanks to Hershey Highs supervisory body. Principal' Cabinet With an enrollment of over two thousand stu' dents in our school, our principal is faced with the almost impossible task of keeping our hallowed halls of learning a smooth, synchronized school. In order to aid our principal, a principals cabinet has been organized. Composed of the administration, the guid- ance departments, and the heads of all departments, its function is to guide, aid, and advise our principal. Meeting regularly every month, the cabinet is instruf mental in making decisions of importance to our school. After questions have been discussed and voted upon by the cabinet, they are sent to a faculty meet- ing. There, our able faculty gives its opinions. Our faculty is an understanding group of people. Sharing our troubles and problems, they endeavor to assist us in making the right decisions. Whenever we need someone to chaperone a dance, to be advisor to a new club, or to help us in planning a trip, a faculty memf ber will be glad to support us. Class It's been a long time since Parke Spancake came home after completing first grade and said to his mother, 'lWell, only eleven more years to go! Who can ever forget how awed we were by the books, pencils and papers. But we dug in and battled through school and we became much wiser fwe thoughtj. Our class was despondent when Bar' bara Hovis broke her leg in fourth grade. Then in fifth grade we were introduced to a new musical instrument, the Tonette . Remember how proud we were when we played them in the Music Fesival. Sixth grade was the opening of a new world to us. We took our first educational trip to Reading to view a museum and visit the Pagoda . Mr. Banta was our first male teacher and everyone wore roses because he suffered from rose fever. There were the Christmas parties and the strange Christmas gift Mr. Banta received from Bruce Shenk. We brought down the house with our minstrel show at the Spring Festival. Then came junior high and our Hrst social, the seventh grade dance fthe girls danced with girls and Sugar and spice Pick on someone your own sxze Jxm Hi tory vice versaj. The run to the cafeteria loosened every- one's leg muscles. There were the times when Hayes Fenstermacher pushed the flower pots out the win' dow in Mrs. Wilbur's room. In eighth grade Bill Sponaugle and Linda Garman won the American Legion awards. We were approaching senior high! Our Sophomore Prom was a gala occasion, Ann Tshudy and Bill Sponaugle were queen and king. We also displayed our thespian talents by perform' ing The Valiant in an assembly. Mr. Forcmarfs biology field trip was a memorable event. Our junior year presented us with a new sub- ject, chemistry. The spots still remain on the ceiling from Phil Anderson's unsuccessful experiment. We further displayed our acting ability in our producf tion of The Night of january Sixteenth . After exams and our Junior Prom came vacation. In the fall of our senior year we were thrilled when Ben Klinger was named AllfStatc quarterback. It is more than just a banquet, it is a gathering of the world famous dignitaries and socialites. We see before us some of the most renowned doctors, lawyers, statesmen, athletes and businessmen in the world. At the head table we see the president of our esteemed class, Bill Sponaugle, designer of the world famous United Universe Building. On his left, we see the president of the planet Earth, Earl Alger, with his advisors Dennis Castelli, john Mentzer and George Glace. On his right, we see J. P. Spancake, Jr., star of radio and television, who will be Master of Ceremonies for today's reunion. Covering this event for Strife magazine, edited by Roberta Swarr, are her ace photographers Roger Burtner, Charles Day and Roderick Dodge. Beside Miss Swarr is her confidential secretary, joan Rakosky, and recording secretaries Sondra Smith, Dorothy Shaeffer, and janet Kingsborough who are busily taking notes. One of the first persons to be interviewed by Weeze is Linda Garman, back from a year of missionary work in darkest Africa. Miss Garman is currently lecturing at the Rocker feller Center. Coming through the door is William Hershey, interplanetary traveler, recently returned from a trip to Mars, with Philip Batdorf, first man ever to live successfully on the Moon. The story, both deeply religious and hilariously comical, portrays the trials and adjustments of the Spence family to life in a new community. Coping with the whims of the trouble makers of the parish is a trying experience for Reverend Spence and his family. Father Spence, eapably characterized by Edward Hitz, has perverse ideas about dancing and movies, but his understanding wife, Esther Long, and his teenfage children, Eugene DiMagno and Carol Ivloyer, manage to overcome his obstinate stand. However, the play ends happily as Reverend Spence creates harmony among his parishioners and erects a new church and parsonage. Under the leadership of their class officers, Kay Wenrich, president, Peggy Zeigler, vice-presidentg Mary Alice Hocker, secretary, and Terry King, treasurer, the class of 1956 shows promise of a great future for Hershey High School. As freshmen, they revealed great abilities in many different fields, and as sophomores, they have had opportunities to put their talents to use. Many of its members are outstanding in sports. Among the boys who helped bring home the South Penn Cofchampionship are Pasquale DiMagno, Bob Guidabaldi, Joe DiBlasio, Ronald Upperman, and Frank Tapparo. The sophomore class has contributed much to the musical organizations of the school as well as to the athletic program. Enthusiasm has been shown in many of the other organized activities. In this modern age, Hershey High's athletic contests are supervised by the Athletic Council, consisting of Mr. Lange, all coaches, and student oiiicers. A record number of students who purchased membership tickets sent the A.A. off to a flying start. The Athletic Council plans and schedules all sports events for the year. This includes printing and selling tickets which is capably handled by Mr. Hovis, faculty treasurer. Outitting the players, supplying equipment, and securing officials are just a few of the jobs of the Athletic Council, Thanks to the planning of the Athletic Council, we have enjoyed another successful year of sports. The South Penn flag flies over Hershey High School since the 1953 Trojans under the excellent coaching of Ed Fornwalt and Sterling Banta have won the title--South Penn Cofchamps. The Trojans have compiled 97 points to their opponents O to become the only team in conference history to accomplish this feat. The entire team's desire to win has been clearly demonstrated by the months of strenuous practice they have endured while sacrihcing many pleasures enjoyed by their fellow classmates. Val' il Football A future varsity team is only as good as the jfV's. Therefore, plenty of credit should be given to our unsung heroes . These fellows spend their evenings after school preparing the varsity for its weekly game. Besides this routine, they play their own schedf ule. The Little Trojan's record of three wins, two losses, and two ties is evidenced of a successful season. This year, as well 'as many of the previous ones, Mr. Banta's coaching ability has been proved by the team's reputation of having one of the best defenses in the state. In the first half of league competition the Trof jans, playing their major opponents on the oppof sitions' home courts, had to settle for a second place tie. M ,,,Q32M.ev.f,s:: Ba ehall In Rome, spring to the gladiators was the token of preparation for the advancing of gladiatorial com- bats. In Hershey High School, springtime means baseball time. This season's team, directed by Coach Sterling Banta, included eight seniors who participated on last year's starting nine. Having been cofchampions of the Central Penn League last year, these Trojans had an excellent opportunity to repeat that achieve' ment. The senior members sparking the Trojans were hurler, Art Brown, catcher, Earl Alger, inf fielders, jim Snyder, Ed Petrucci, Ben Klingler, and Glenn Zeigler, and outielders, Frank Capitani and Joe Butch. Among the underclassmen who showed splendid ability were Ronald Stuart, Bob Sands, and Bill Kristich. The will and determination of this squad was evidenced by the commendable record it established. The 195 4 baseball team should be congratulated on its fine job. - Golf Track Under the line coaching of Ed Fornwalt, Joe Wallace, and Charles Downin, the Trojan runners were troublefmakers in the South Penn Conference and were well represented in District 3, P.I.A.A. The nucleus of this fine team was formed by the letter winners of the preceding year. In addition to these seasoned performers, there was a handful of hard-working newcomers contributing to the success of the team. Sparkplugs of the track team were Roger Burt' ner, quarterfmiler, Gene DiMagno, hurdlerg Bruce Shenk, star half and quarter-milerg Bob Tancredi, high jumper and hurdlerg Les Walters, sprinter and hurdlerg Dick Wright, sprinter, pole vaulter and broad jumper, and Kenn Zimmerman, distance man. Losing only three outstanding performers from the previous squad, the Hershey High cindermen galloped away to a successful season. Congratulaf tions for a job well done in establishing track as the truly great sport it is. Tenni Coach Bob Young's tennis team was hit by two things: the loss of two topflight swingsters and the advancement of his team into the stronger Cen- tral Penn loop where it had to battle to establish a mark in conference standings. Despite these facts, Coach Young built a fine team around his three returning lettermen, Clayton Kauffman, a conscientious, hard working senior, Carl Marcocci, a fast, wellfcoordinated racqueteer, and Don Spangler, a smooth southpaw swingster. A constant battle ensued for the fourth and fifth spots as little Larry Strait, Carl Mann, joe DiBlasio, and Ronald Upperman, all sophomores, vied for these positions throughout the year. Two new courts have been constructed, which enable the team to practice more efficiently, thereby multiplying its manpower and increasing the popu- larity of a great sport. Congratulations for an ex- cellent job. The girls' sports' program, under the helpful guidance of the G.A.C. and their advisor, Miss Jones, has shown outstanding progress during this year. Aiming to increase interest in varied athletic activities, the girls have put much effort into arrang- ing appealing and convenient schedules for the vari- ous intramural contests. This year the organization of the council has been changed. In addition to the five juniors and five seniors, twelve girls from the sophomore class were chosen to fill the places of the last year's seniors. Five of these girls elected for athletic ability and ser' vice to the club, will become permanent members at the end of the year. During the year the girls sponsor a foul shooting contest with the lucky winner receiving a gold trof phy. Their efforts are concentrated on the Turkey Trot, a Thanksgiving dance famous for its fabulous floor show. Highlighting the hockey season was the Harris' burg Area Playday. Through experience gained during intramurals, Hershey's team, coached by Miss jones, made a ine showing. As an unpredicted early snowfall covered the Held, the sports enthusiasts moved indoors. Here they encountered the fast moving game of volleyball. A challenge to each team was to gain perfect cooper' ation essential to keeping the ball flying across the net. On to basketball, our most popular sport. League winners climaxed the season with a playfolf game in the Community Club. The teachers proved themselves good sports by playing an allfstar team. Tennis, our only individual sport, begins with the arrival of spring. Many avid tennis fans, brush- ing up on their game, crowd the courts, Seniors who have led the Held since they were sophomores will be hard to beat. Concluding our intramural program is softball, sometimes called the women's national pastime . Crys of full count , bases loaded , and home run fill the atmosphere with excitement. It has tried, successfully, to better relations between the faculty and students. Under the leadership of Earl Alger and the careful guidance of Mrs. Callus, the Council has progressed greatly. Just as the Roman Senate guided the Roman people, the Council aids and guides each and every student in our school. The Trojan Band gained recognition through its excellent drills at the football games and the enjoyable spring concert. Hearing these words echoing through the halls Monday mornings can mean only one thing-the Speech Choir is busily working to improve itself. Under the direction of the choir mistress, Miss Dietrich, this group practices as hard as, if not harder than, the Romans did to achieve clear, choral speaking. The results of the hard work of this fine troupe are made use of in assemblies, ParentfTeacher Asso- ciation meetings and our annual school festivals. Many members of our speech choir today will undoubtedly be the public speakers of tomorrow. Debate Speech Choir As the orators of Rome had the opportunities to express their ideas on the topics of the day, so the members of our debating team have the privilege of exchanging opinions on a current subject with teams from other schools. Under the capable guidance of the everfpatient Miss Ward, these students do all the routine work of caring for the large number of books and magaf zines in our outstanding library. Because that's the day when the regular routine of study is broken for the purpose of entertainment. Although there were fewer assemblies this year, those which were presented provided excellent entertainment for the student body. Mr. Morrison presented to us an unusual program of harpsicord and piano music, plus some ine imper- sonations of early composers. Our own school clubs were well represented in the assembly programs this yearg to begin, there were the stirring Student Council induction ceremonies, and later, its fine talent show. The F. F. The boys have lived up to the Scout oath and law through numerous service projects. In their meetings they have done the leading and planning as well as the deeds which make a wellfrounded scouting program. The troop is primarily for boys who live in areas where there are no troops. Nature study, troop camping, and community service are activities in which these boys participate. Its enrollment includes a large majority of the commercial students. The main purpose of the club is to aid the stu' dents in choosing the proper phase of commercial work for their careers. The Varsity H is an organization for the boys who have acquired the H which signifies outstanding achievements in the field of athletics. This club, under the faculty supervision of Mr. Brittain and student president, Frank Capitani, cofpublishes the football programs, sponsors the alumni basketball game, provides the senior members with sweaters, and each spring holds a dance, featuring an al1fmale chorus line. May we commend the or' ganization for fine work. As the Romans of yesteryear trained their young men to be future citizens of the Republic, we, through the HifY, train our young men to be better citizens for God and country. The training given the boys is useful in their present life as well as in preparing them for the future.
