Anyone looking in upon the administration for a day would be amazed at the vast amount of responsibility placed upon each administra- tor. As the day begins, he would find them preparing for a long line of recent absentees. The administration must be able to determine whether each absentee should be excused or unexcused, and if unexcused they must place detention upon the student. But that isn't the only responsibility of this able body. There are numerous others including maintenance of the school buildings, getting supplies, planning the curricula, lending a helping hand to the student council and student activities, and establishing better school-com- munity relationships. These problems when taken together would be enough to make any other person stop and look - and look again- and then take another look before agreeing to take the place of one of the school's mainstays and deal exclusively with these problems. We commend you, Mr. Koch, Mr. Lange, Mr. Eby, Mr. Evans, and your numerous aides, for the remarkable work of spreading the acoustics so evenly throughout the school. SCHOOL BOARD man. E. Do you remember: Fred Pellegrini crying during the entire first day of kindergarten? The visit to the turkey farm in a bus? Making clay animals after visiting the farm Our excursion to see Fred Evans' Christmas In the Cool Cool Cool Platform? The fun we had with Alice and Jerry? When Don Hummer was third grade spelling 9 Being dolls in the 4th grade Christmas operetta? Playing main tag on the big playground? John Gruber's original newspapers? How Miss Reiner! combed James Simes' hair each morning? The American Legion Awards won by Carole Hite and Eddie Pasquale? Our fabulous Beer Club and Dutch Band? THEME OF WISDOM Remember how those wonderful days of senior W high flew by when: We crowned king, Wayne Lentz and queen, Cindy Clark, at the Sophomore Prom? Hertzlcr and Diemler won the F.F.A. awards? Miss Cool taught us Silas Marner and Les Mis- erables? Everyone had a good time at the Half and Half Hobo Dance? The town was polled about the coming elections by Mr. Shirk's history classes? We had fourth period chemistry experiments? Our class rings arrived just before Christmas? Nagle, 'l'ROKE 0F PREMAUY One of the most important organizations in our school is the Student Council, advised by Mrs. Callus. Its main purpose is to maintain close har- mony between the students and the faculty of the three departments of the school. The students seeking office reveal their desire to the student body at the close of each year. This year, by secret ballot, the pupils elected were: president, Robert Haines, vice-president, Edward Hitzg secretary, Carol Hark- ness, treasurer, Robert Beimesderfer. Just a few of the many items on which the Council acts are selling Trojan shirts and writing paper, sponsoring noon-time dances, and settling our con- tinually arising problems. The study and work phase is tackled by each student himself, but the activities' program needs the cooperation of more than one. It's morning and the dance of the hours has begun - that fascinating whirl of activities which occupies our day at Hershey High. As seniors we found that the twenty-four hours was scarcely enough to enable us to pursue the endless round of classes, clubs, sports, and an untold variety of activities. We dashed hither and yon in the mad tumult of conflicting schedules. Out of this chaos emerged the more soothing strains of the late afternoon lull. Soon night brought with it an end to the dance of the hours, at least until we began the eventful round of the clock again. We are en route from Hershey, Pennsylvania to Blue Skiesn, the capital city of the recently formed state, 'tApril Showers . Where's the patient, Doctor? 0ME'l'IME- On boarding the plane we are all made quite comfortable by two air-line hostesses, Mary Herr and Helen Walters. How surprised we are to discover that on this very same plane are Bolten and Black , the new Martin and Lewis team, Jimmie Sterling with his pop orchestra, and Anna Mae Cullers, renown star of the Metropolitan Opera! We are still more sur- prised to discover that their destination is the same as ours! Arriving in Blue Skies we are greeted by the music of HJ. Simes' Brass Band and are welcomed by none other than the mayor himself, Eugene Grubb! With him to welcome us are John Gruber, a doctor at the nearby Stormy Weatheri' University, and that combi- nation engineer and international basketball prodigy, Fred Evans. Escorted by these three men we tour the prosperous village. Our first place of interest is School Days school, where we peek into the classrooms of JoAnn Reis, Daisy Strickler, Jean Good, Ben Olena, and John Goodwill. My, how their Hershey High School training is showing! From the school we next visit the novel Make Your Own Sunshine Manufacturing Corporation. The manager of the corporation, Donald Hummer, willingly leads us through three of the major departments. In the Draft- ing room are Edward Shultz and Ronald Leib- friedg operating the complicated mechanical objects in the Machine division are Martin Fureman, Harry Bricker, and Russel Pancake. This factory is the most original and largest in America. As we pass down My Blue Heaven street, we see Gilbert's Funeral Home , Spangler's Dental Clinicw, and Bucher's Fashion Shop fvery often, we are told, the three businesses cooperatej. Traveling down Stardust Boule- vard we stop to chat with two adept beau- ticians, Shirley Mack and Nancy Stoner. Designing a masterpiece of construction. 0MEWllEllE ls that where a secretary usually sits? By the time we arrive at '6Rainbow Inter- sectioni' we are extremely tired and hungry. Fortunately only a few blocks away is D, Miller's Minit-Malt Shoppe , which has been converted for the day into a huge dining hall to accommodate us all. And what a marvelous meal is set before us-milk from M. Hertzler's Dairy Farm, and fresh meat and vegetables from neighboring farmers, Ronald Gruber, Donald Martin, and William Thomas, deliciously prepared by the housewives of Blue Skies , Janet Walters, Heather McKay, Ruth Newhouse and Gladys Nye. After we have dined, the mayor escorts us to the business office of Lollo, Biemesderfer, and Hershey, Attorneys at Law, where their secre- taries, Norma Gingrich, June Mann, and .lose- phine Mastromatteo, inform us that all details for the ceremony have been completed. Oh, you don't know what ceremony! Why, the dedication of Sunny Mirror , the new hospital! The hospital is the only one of its kind in existence-it includes the practice of every phase of medicine and research! It was de- signed by the previously mentioned, Mr. Evans, and was constructed by the F. Jonson Construc- tion Company which employs such faithful workers as Robert Haines, Ronald Cassel, and Riley Rhine. And now we take our place in the crowd about the hospital and wait for the ceremony to begin. We see near the front of the decorated platform Carol Hite and Elva Shertzer, the two editors who are covering this spectacular event for their own creation, Reader's Digest of Time, Life and Holidayii. To their right we see the most important person in this affair- Professor A. J. Hartzler, who, in coming to take part in the dedication of this building, has had to cancel his most recently planned trip to the moon. Destination-MOON ! ls it time? Oh, yes it is! Aren't you ex- cited! To think that at this very minute Pro- fessor Hartzler is laying the cornerstone of Sunny Mirror Hospital. Just look at the expression on the faces of Doctor McCann and Doctor Light! How thrilled and happy they both must be! How eagerly they are receiving the congratulations of Carol Harkness, Cindy Clark, Shirley Ginder, Betsy McMullen, and Alice Flowers, their staff of supervising nurses! But our eyes are no longer closed! The vision is fading and we are back again in the present. What an eye-openingu experience this trip has been! Fisher, have again won outstanding recognition, as is shown hy the many prizes and honors they won throughout the season. Une of the major feats of the hand is their performance during half-time at the foot- ball games. Their appearances in parades have brought back top ratings. The hand concert held in the theatre has always been the annual treat for the public. Again this year the tradition was upheld by a fine perform- ance. An added attraction was the combined concert of the Elizabethtown High School Band and our own Hershey High Band. The annual Christmas festival, their first appearance of the season, was outstanding. The one hundred members, under the expert leadership of W. Paul Campbell, practice every Monday and Friday activity period. The chorus has attained a record of five straight state forensic championships, the first group to do so. Under its capable officers, Fred Evans, president, Bill McCann, vice-presi- dentg and Alice Flowers, secretary-treasurer and with a repertoire including everything from The Whiffenpoof Songn to Beautiful Savior, performances before the PTA and various other civic groups were extremely successful. The individual ensembles and soloists are an essential part of the chorus. They, too, were outstanding in the forensic contests and music festival. Indi- vidual members of the chorus represented it in district and state choral groups. Last, but not least, is the chorus social held at the end of the year. CLASSICAL NIMH -I ATUR Listen! lt's Fiddle Faddle played by the Hershey High School orchestra. This talented group of musicians, capably led by Mr. W. Paul Campbell and concert master, Sandy Stover, played for the annual spring and Christmas music festivals, between acts of the Senior class play, and in assemblies. On their repertoire are March of the Peersf' Haydn's Shepherd King, and selections from Rodgers and Hart. The orchestra, with its fourteen Senior members, is well represented every year at the district and state orchestras. At each rehearsal John Gruber, James Simes, and George Yoder, able librarians, dis- tributed and collected the music folders. One function of the A.A. is to help support the athletic teams which are not able to support themselves. This year the A.A. had a record total of over eight hundred members. At the head of the A.A. and working in harmony with it is the Athletic Council. This Council is composed of four student officers elected by the members of the A.A. and those of the faculty who are involved in the school's athletic program. This year's student officers are: president, Dave Swartz, vice-president, Earl Alger, secretary, Shirley Koserg treasurer, Carol Harkness. The principal function of the A.A. is to plan and arrange the details connected with the athletic program. The girls' precision timing in leading cheers is no accident - it's the result of hard work and long hours of practice. Led by their captain, Carol Harkness, and coached by Miss Danenberger, physical educa- tion teacher, the pep squad shoulders the major share of responsibility for the spirit in pep rallies and at the football and basketball games. Although it was not a particularly victorious season, Coach Charles Downin's team consisted of several out- standing performers. Notable among these was Martin Kulp, one of the best swimmers in Hershey High's swimming history. Other capable performers included seniors Ben Olena, George Shearer, and John Rodgers, juniors Willard Freet and Dick Bomgardnerg and sophomores George Trump and Dick Cap- pelli. There were only two seniors, Byron Timmins and Randall W'ayhright, on the squad W'ith six returning lettcrmen, Kemhle, Walters, Ruhl, Hoffman, Day, and Howard, Coach Brittain had a fine nucleus around which to build this year's team. The grapplers opened the season on De- cember 9 with a 31-17 victory over West York and continued their winning ways for their next five matches. On January 12, Lancaster McCaskey pulled an upset as they handed the Trojans their first defeat of the season. Seven starters were lost from last year's highly successful team. Coach Sterling Banta, in his sixth year as head mentor, had a handful of letter-winners plus several other boys who played American Legion ball around whom to build his team. Letter winners from last year who were out- standing this year were southpaw hurler Eugene Grubb, fastballer Art Brown, infielder Ben Klingler, and outfielder Frank Capitani. This how- ever, did not hamper the success of the team of '53, Under the head coach, Charles Downin, and assistant coaches Ed Forwalt and ,Noe Wal- lace, the team caused plenty of trouble in the South Penn Conference. The loss of several stars from last year's team was felt, but the returning lettermen took this in their stride and, along with newcomers on the squad, completed a successful season. Outstanding performers were: Martin Kulp, pole vaulterg Ron Cassel and Les Walters, high stepping hurdlersg Bob Tancredi, light-footed high jumperg and Randall Waygright, distance runner. Having no returning lettermen, Coach Bob Young had to start from scratch. However, by forming his team around the few boys who had some experience, Mr. Young, just as he had done in past years, produced a team which well represented Hershey High in the Lancaster County League. Playing a key role in the success of the team was senior-swingster Phil Cookie Cake. From the junior class was Bill Kauffman, who saw limited action last year, but came into his own this year. Representing the sophomore class were Carl Marcocci, Sandy Stover, and Sam Hinkle. By diligent practice and bard work, the squad completed a successful season and de- veloped several outstanding players who will do much in determining the success of the tennis teams in- the future. Fcrucci, secretary. The Girls' Athletic Council, with Miss Danenburger as its advisor, is the school's most envied classical clique, at least to the girls. However, membership is limited to only fifteen-five seniors, five juniors, and five sophomores. These few are the undisputed sponsors of all girls' sports - field hockey, volleyball, basketball, tennis, and baseball. At any home basketball game these girls can be seen 'ipeddlingn candy through the stands. To make use of any money acquired, the council sponsors its annual Turkey Trot, at which is presented a marvelous floor show. The slogan, Harriet can carry it,', will surely always strike a responsive chord in everyone's memory. At the finale of each member's senior year she is awarded a jacket and emblem to signify her membership in and cooperation with the council. First on every year's agenda is field hockey with its welcome Q?J trips to and from Memorial Field on those chilly autumn days. Despite that discouraging factor, field hockey intramurals are enjoyed by a sufficient number of teams to make com- petition very keen. No sooner has field hockey come to a close than the sport of the grace notes starts. Stumped? Cer- Potsed for action Time out for tears. Ground-sticks. Ground-sticks. WHAM! BALLAB BE THE BELLE tainly not - its volleyball. Real teamwork is necessary for an efficient volleyball game, and in that phase this yearis championship team can boast one hundred per cent cooperation. In the early part of the year team captains began looking for talented, willing persons for their basketball teams. This game of skill is really stimulating, both physically and mentally and has many, many par- ticipants. Concluding the sports program are baseball and tennis. Tennis is enjoyed by the minority, while base- ball has a large number of followers. ln fact cheers from its fans can be heard at the far end of the school ground. Each girl who takes part in any or all of these sports is amply rewarded by the enjoyment in the sport itself and by her many, newly-acquired friendships. If looks could kill! Advised by Mr. Diffenbaugh, this ambitious organization is responsible for many beneficial activities. As our Christmas holidays came to a close, we witnessed their competitive spirit and good sports- manship in a close basketball tangle with a strong junior varsity. Through the diligent efforts of this capable group of senior high boys, led by Barry Heaps, presidentg Bruce Shenk, treasurer, and Gerald Kelly, secretary, the annual Easter Program was a carefully planned program. This move proved to be unnecessary, for every member did a splendid job of keeping hall traffic under control. Do you remember last winter with all its 'cStorn1y Weather? How to spend your extra minutes at lunch time was no problem - the Noon Service Club had seen to that. Every year this club provides special noon hour entertainment, ranging from movies to talent programs. Then, too, if you needed to satisfy your sweet tooth, all that was necessary was a short walk to the end of the hall. A large amount of the proceeds collected at the candy stand were used in presenting to the school some worthwhile gift to be enjoyed by all. Mr. Joseph Sopko is the advisor to this active group of tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade commercial students. In the course of the year several people from the business world spoke to the club and gave demonstra- tions on modern equipment. Zem. ii A NARRATIVE IN UNlSON To anyone walking through the halls any Monday during activity period comes the sound of enchantingly melodic speaking. The source of said speaking is Mr. Foreman's roomg inside the room is our speech choir, a group of fifty, ably directed by Miss Viola Dietrich. Besides reciting nonsensical selections, the choir also mastered and retold in the Christmas Program the story of the nativity in scriptural form. The topic, Resolved: That the Atlantic Pact Nations should form a federal union, was most timely. The club debated with teams from Susequehanna, Hummelstown and Middletown. Melvin Hertzler, the fellows raised flowers, vegetables, and livestock. The year was filled with hard work and study, but the boys were rewarded by self-satisfaction, as could be seen by their faces on the night of the father-son banquet. The sophomore year, amid the new glory it offers to each individual, is a trying year, for it tests the class as one complete unit. The class of '55 has passed that test with honors. Honors 1n sports there was no sport in which the sophomore class was not represented Beginning so greatly so early, it is safe to pre- dict a tremendous crescendo for future years in basketball, baseball, swimming and all the other sports.
