Sam Black cried his hearT ouT because he didn'T know The way home, unTil undersTand- ing Miss Baker saT him on her desk and counTed his Treckles To ease his misery. The nexT Tew years were crammed Tull wiTh many very inTeresTing evenTs. ln TacT, aT one Time Bob Tshudy was inspired To wriTe poeTry Tor The GRADESPEAKER. John Reeder. in grade Tour was acclaimed The Child oT The Week Tor being The TirsT one To bring in his healTh cor- recTion slip. During The same year. Doris KauTz did noT miss a single spelling word-imagine! One oT The mosT ouTsTanding honor sTudenTs Tor many OT her grade school years was l-lanna Spon- augle. OT course, The year in which These sTudenTs graduaTed Trom The grades proved To be very ouTsTanding - in one way or anoTher. Elma BreidensTine esTablished herself as a real he- woman when she sTruck Roy HeisTand over The head wiTh a baseball baT. One young carpenTer, Jay T-leisey by name, made a wooden raT Trap buT Tailed To make a caTch. OTTen Mr. Risser's Temper would geT The besT oT him. and he would Throw a ruler aT some unsuspecTing worm. The Tunny parT is ThaT simulTaneously The whole room would duck-all buT The unsuspecTing-and you know The resT. Oh yes, Jay STahl and Ken ErnsT sTarred in a play-called SNICKERTY NICK. The SCEHININDJIDSTITS gianT, Baron Bill-Aaron Bomberrum, was played by Ken, and The gianT's servanT, SnickerTy Nick, was char5cTerized by Jay STahl. This dramaTiza- Tion cerTainly clirnaxed an unTorgeTTable year. Then came high school wiTh all iTs aches and pains. Aaron KauTTman was cerTainly puT in his place when a Teacher broke a ruler over his head. And The enTire sevenTh grade pracTically lived in GuaTemala during hisTory class, lisTening To all Those vivid accounTs oT Miss Geyer's Travels. l-low The boys used To sound all sorTs oT wolT calls aT preTTy Miss RiTzman-The Teacher who Tried To convince her conTused young sTudenTs ThaT There is noThing like cold, buT iusT an absence OT heaT. And do you remember The way our music Teacher senT Those bewildered children one by one To The oTTice Tor misbehavior in music class? BuT liTe was Tun in school, Too-especially The Time everyone broughT a nice shiny apple To Miss WyckoTT's room To munch as a mid-aTTer- noon snack. LaTin verbs?-Those young linguisTs even published a LaTin newspaper, wiTh Mildred OrTenzi ediTing The obiTuary. Mr. Foreman's bio- logical lecTure room oTTered ringsside seaTs Tor The baseball games being played on The play- ground by gym classes. Yes, school had iTs good poinTsl The class oT '48 was guided very ably Through The enTire senior high by PresidenT Jay STahl. During Those years in senior high, many sTudenTs became prominenT in various school pro- grams. OuTsTanding in boys sporTs were Remo lonni, Clair Eshleman, Divo DiClemenT, Roy Hei- sTand, Harold Kreider, William WinTers, Charles Gipe, Franklin Gingrich, Wayne STeTTler, Harold l-losTeTTer, Earl l-loTTman, PeTe Marcucci, and Richard BaraTucci: and Louise Whisler, Lois ShulTz and Lois Copp in girls' sporTs. NoTed in music were Adelia Mease, who presenTed violin solos in The CommuniTy TheaTer many Times, John Bomberger, Nellie STump, and Jay l-leisey. Jessie Nucci's wriTing won her wide acclaim.
