The 1984 JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Society) was administered on Feb. 21st, at John A. Logan Junior College. The subject areas tested included math, chemistry, physics, biology, graphics, and English. Our team members were required to compete in two of the above subject areas. Individuals receiving special recognition from our team were Steve Lipe for his runner-up finish in math and Tom Murrah for his second place finish in chemistry. Although the other members of Herrin's team did not receive special recognition for their efforts, their per- formance was a compliment both to their own intellectual adeptness and to the long term efforts of the faculty and staff of Herrin Unit Dist. 4. A walkway of green potted plants led the way through an arch decorated with red and silver heart balloons. As the couples stepped through the archway, they gazed around the ballroom to admire the decorations. A Gazebo in the center of the dance floor was decorated with the heart balloons and green potted plants. Heart balloons surrounded the dance floor, while the tables were decorated with vases of colorful balloons and silver roses. Later couples danced to music provided by the Gary Jones and Joe Stanley Band. Master of Ceremonies James Ridgway and Valerie Sowman drew names to award doorprizes which were contributed by several area business. This was the first year to choose a Prom King and Queen from the junior class. The junior class voted earlier for five girls and five boys as candidates. All couples attending the Prom then cast their ballots for their choice. Anthony Goodrum and Darla Coriasco were chosen as the 1984 Prom King and Queen. Stay clear folks, this one’s mine!” Golf Volley ba.ll The 1983 Volleyball Team had a tough year, with the loss of some strong, key players early in the season and the resultant lack of experience being the major contributing factors. Tammy Newbold. the new head coach, was aided by Cheryl Monroe. There were many new experiences for both the coaches and the players. The team was the youngest in the conference, and consider- ing their youth and lack of experience, the season s won loss record did not adequately show the accomplishments the athletes made. During the middle of the season. Cathy Woodcock, the only senior, had a knee Injury which left the Volleyball Tigers without their leader, strongest spiker. and most ex- perienced player. As a result. Coach Newbold had to call on younger junior and sophomores to do the job on the varsity team. When considering the im- provement of the team as a whole, and the experience gained during this season, next year's team will definitely have the advantage over many of its conference foes. Tri- captains were John Yancey, Harold Smith, and Chris DeChristina. The one time leaders of the South Seven Conference were stricken with a series of losses that contributed to their downfall. Most games were played with starters on the bench with injuries. The loss record did not tell the full story of the season, as many games were very close and several were lost in the last few seconds of the game. Despite the team’s losing season, personal goals were reached. Senior running back Harold Smith, who lacked only 32 yards to rush for over 1000, easily reached his destination before the second half. Three of the most outstanding games during the season were the defeat of the Conference Champions, the Harrisburg Bulldogs 14-6, the victory over second place West Frankfort 14-12, and finally defeating the Benton Rangers 74-8 at the Homecoming game. Mr. Henley — Sponsor. 91 Just a note to the student body from the editor of the ’84 Herrinite. After working for four years on the yearbook staff, I must say that in my estimation, the 84 Herrinite is the best book 1‘ve had a part in creating. Yearbook staff members have put in more hours of effort than there are pages in the book, especially during the week before deadline! Every year, Herrin sends in a copy of the Herrinite to be criticized by Southern Illinois School Press Assoc. The best 12 books submitted are awarded “Golden Dozen” awards. The ’83 judging was done from a purely journalistic viewpoint, much to the detriment of our yearbook. So this year we decided to design our book solely for you — the student body — and totally disregard everyone else’s opinions. So enjoy your book, and tell us what you think. We want YOUR opinions! Mr. Plapp was all splffled up when the photographer caught Mm. Another thrilling day in the library — Connie Spani must like reading big books — like dictionaries! No, those boxes were not full! Darren Kerr just wanted to make us believe he could lift all those yearbooks. Yearbook staff members waited for the big rush during the yearbook distribution session during Labor Day Weekend. 214 “I know that picture was here a minute ago!'' Yes. he did get all those napkins stuffed before the parade. Year-m Review During the 1983-1984 school year, people locally and nationally traveled along through the many events, both miraculous and disastrous, which occurred. Herrin High was lucky enough to have many outstanding events occur as opposed to anything disastrous. During the football season, Harold “Boo Boo“ Smith rushed for over 1000 yards, a highlight which erased the memories of a rainy Homecoming. Over Christmas vacation, new ceilings were install- ed in the entire first floor for protection against the asbestos insulation. During the early spring, a water main break near Mt. Vernon left the entire Rend Lake water system without water for forty-eight hours which caused all schools in the affected towns to shut down. Meanwhile, the Tigeret- tes took third place at the State Drill Team Competition in Chicago, the first time the Herrin Drill Team had ever competed. Finally, one of our photographers caught THE photographer at his own game. 215 Mr. Kunce and Mr. Rushing announced their retirements. Mr. Henley was selected to fill the position Mr. Rushing vacated and Mr. Kirby was chosen to be the new HHS Assistant Principal. Dur- ing the spring, the Drama Club was formed to aid Mrs. Bates in her drama productions. Also, After-prom had a format change — underclassmen were not allowed to attend except as guests of the upperclassmen. The boys’ baseball team was regional champion for the first time in almost a decade, and the girls’ softball team upheld their regional championship title. In Herrin and the rest of Southern Illinois, many outstanding in- cidents took place. In the immediate Herrin area, two branch banks were opened in Energy — The Energy Bank of Herrin and the Energy facility of the People’s Bank of Marion. The Bank of Herrin renovated to add more space to the Herrin facility, and several new businesses opened their doors. The Illinois Cafe reopened under new management. Mayor Don Swinford resigned and was replaced by Alderman Ed Quaglia. Herrin also lost three very important community members: Paul Johnson, long time HHS supporter; Dr. Miller, outstanding surgeon; and Eugene Eckert, former HHS principal. The pillow people. Mr. Koerner. the infamous fifth hour Library-Watcher! Guest speaker in German class. Johannes Schlandt. presented slides of Germany with cultural commentary. 216 Year in Review H.H.S. — after the blizzard. 217 Hudlers Greg Beach and Brett Wieland demonstrated their technique. In Southern Illinois, it was an excellent year for football. The SIU Salukis won the NCAA Na- tional championships, and the U. of I. Fighting Illini were invited to the Rose Bowl. An Air Il- linois plane crash prompted an investigation which ultimately resulted in the company's declaring bankruptcy. The Southern lllinoian held the first Tip-Off Classic at the SIU arena to fund scholarships for students in Southern Il- linois. The WCIL canned food drive sparked a class rivalry at HHS which resulted in our win- ning the W-CIL Jam Van for a concert. However, by far the most unifying circumstance was the Bobby Purnell Fund Drive. Purnell, a former star swimmer at Marion High School, was stricken with a rare form of cancer early in the school year. In April, a bone marrow transplant was declared his only chance of sur- vival, but Purnell’s family was unable to fund the operation. Southern lllinoians opened their hearts and their pocketbooks in a massive drive that raised $166,000. However, Purnell never grew strong enough to undergo the transplant and died peacefully on June 5, 1984. The first annual spirit trophy was awarded to the class of 1985! 218 Year in-Review Government student Andrew Hargreave instructed Darrin Kerr in the proper voting procedure. Taylor-Balfour Company representative Bill Blewett measured Donnie Hammann for cap and gown. Many high school students, teachers, and community members attended the Vocational Fair. Year-in-Re vi e w On the national level, many advances and setbacks took place. Sally Ride became the first woman American astronaut. The 100th birthday of the Brooklyn Bridge was celebrated with fireworks, while the anniversary of the movie King Kong was memorialized with a King Kong balloon tied to the top of the Empire State Building. After much controversy. James Watt resigned as Secretary of the Interior. The U.S. invaded Granada. The Australia II and its mysterious keel took the Americas Cup away from the Americans for the first time in yachting history. New fashion and dance crazes were begun by the hit movie Flashdance! Another craze. “Cabbage Patch Dolls,” took America by storm, especially during the Christmas holiday season. America suffered the losses of many prominent and respected people: Paul “Bear” Bryant, Barney Clark, Lillian Carter, Joe Delaney, Buckminster Fuller, Ira Gershwin, Henry Scoop” Jackson, David Niven, Jessica Savitch, Tennessee Williams, Frank Reynolds, Grady Nutt, David Kennedy, Slim Pickins, and Ethel Merman. Julie Tresnak proved that graduates were definitely silly. Wendy Prewitt was thrilled to get her senior announcements and invitations. Pete Ponder just loved library reference! 220 Dr Tresnak gave marshalls Mike Abba and Andrette Brown some last minute instruc- tions for Baccalaureate as Mr. Henley watched in amusement The 1985 Herrinite officers: Andrette Brown. Shane Chaney. Lori Marlow, and Katie Koerner Dr. Tresnak got in the act at Prom! Summer time in the high school lobby! 221 Bacca a urea te Gra.dua.tion Baccalaureate was held at the Catholic Church on May 22. The high school chorus presented two selections before the message was given by Rev. Bayler. The 1984 Graduation Ceremony was held in the high school gym on May 25. Junior Marshalls Mike Abba and Andrette Brown, dressed in red cap and gown, escorted approximately 163 seniors who were dressed in black cap and gown with orange and black tassels. Following the invocation by Salutatorian Terri Jenkins, Valedictorian Julie Tresnak gave the Commencement Ad- dress. The benediction was presented by Julie Ridgway. Rev Lavon Bayler. pastor of the First Methodist Church, gave the Bac- calaureate address. Brian Chamness gave the benediction. Noelle Lloyd gave the invocation. The high school chorus, under the direction of Mr. Proctor, provided two selec- tions of music for the enjoyment of the audience. Graduating senior Julie Tresnak provided the prelude, processional, recessional, and choral accompaniment on the organ. Baccalaureate was held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Graduate band members performed along with the entire band for the enjoyment of the Class of 1984 The first seniors to enter the gym were Bob Butler and Pete Ponder Valedictorian. Julie Tresnak. addressed the class and the audience. 223 Come on along And check this out: Take a look at what HHS is all about.- Four years have come And gone too soon. Now we’ll graduate Before it's June. The friends we’ve met And come to know Will soon be gone or Ready to go. In our minds the memories Linger. The times we’ve had both Good and bad. The teachers we’ve had, the friends we’ve made, And even the silly pranks We've played. Out in this world so Big, so free, there will Be some we may Never see. Some will be doctors And lawyers and such. Just don't let it change Your personality too much. With this I bid my Fond adieu and leave The rest up to you. — Kendra Gentry 224 ■ COME O 0 D to 1 TIGERS ROAR
