This yearbook is dedicated to that wonderful year 1962-63 at Herrin Township High School .... the time for gala affairs, home- coming, Queen Karen, the prom .... the time for concerts, pep rallies, “Check Your Worries” .... the time for football battles led by Captains Carnaghi and Nesler .... the time for exciting basketball games, the thrilling Centralia Holiday Tourney .... the time for plays “January Thaw” and “Room for One More . . . . the time for track competition with Rodney and Lynn .... the time for class elections, banquets, club meetings. The year brought laughter and good times but it also carried challenges .... the challenges of growing, learning, maturing, deciding .... the time for solving math problems, writing themes, rummaging through history. It was the year of decision .... selecting the branch of knowl- edge that one wishes to pursue .... choosing friends and form- ing lifetime relationships .... deciding to speak up for one’s convictions. To be eligible scholastically one must have a 4.3 average at the end of the junior year. Activity wise one must have earned 25 points based on membership in athletics, music, drama, clubs, or other aids to school activities. Each activity is weighted and near the close of the second semester new members are admitted to this select group. Along with the Drill Team, directed by Mrs. Don Imhulse, the band participated in the S.I.U. Home- coming Parade early in the fall. Robert Ward is the band's drum major. 82 Jim Gulley, Pam Wilcox, and Ven- nie Jones were elected Mr. and Misses Music for 1962-63. This award is made to the boy and girl—this year two girls—who have contributed most to the music department. These students are chosen by a majority vote of the members of the band and choir.
