Breathless suspense before momentous student-body elections . . . lively class debates during Town Meetings . . . senior jaunts to the Glendale City Hall . . . traditional Commencement exercises . . . Monday afternoon club meetings . . . idle hours around the malt stand . . . soft lights of formal proms . . . purple-and-white streamers at Rose Bowl football games . . . colorful Fiesta Days . . . entertaining talent assemblies . . . campus halls ringing with the laughter of carefree youth in those pre-Pearl Harbor days. Total war has brought to Hoover', as to other schools, the revision of courses to meet specific war objectives, timely information to boys about to enter the armed forces, campus activities furthering home defense and Red Cross work—changes accepted with a vigor that reflects the undaunted spirit of American youth. Curricular readjustments have stressed mathematics and science courses, map and chart reading, code classes, machine shop training, and the importance of nutrition in wartime. Physical education has introduced commando tactics to build a healthier and more efficient body for every Hoover boy. No department has escaped the changes wrought by this global war. During the year many have left the campus to enter America's armed forces, instructed in their choice by visiting representatives of the Army, the Navy, and the Marine Corps. Others below draft age have reported for work in the war factories under a plan by which student workers may obtain a necessary education and yet, four hours a day, join the lines at the factory gate. And day after day the student bank has issued War Stamps and Bonds. Day after day the Minute Man has waved silent testimony of Hoover's financial contribution to the war effort.

While- taking a home nursing course, the enrollees study child care and other phases of the subject. In the clothing clinic students obtain valuable aid in making over and economiz- ing on the family wearing apparel. A nutrition class offers a canteen certificate, and instruction in the canning of war-time foods provides timely information. 6
